Day 94
July 2018
"Fae! Fae! Hurry! The song's about to start! Get the mic!" Fiyero exclaimed as he handed Elphaba the second microphone.
They were in the couple's booth of a karaoke bar. It actually took Fiyero a lot of persuading before Elphaba agreed to go there for one of their dates. But ultimately, he won when he told her they would rent a private booth, order some fries, and she didn't have to sing if she didn't want to.
"Except for duets!" Fiyero said when she reminded him what he told her.
She rolled her eyes at him but began setting aside the tray of fries she was eating. She left the bench and grabbed the wired microphone he held out for her—all the while giving him the stink eye.
"You start," he said through his mic, grinning.
The piano played through the speakers of the karaoke set, and he could feel the bass thumping on the ground as the colorful lights danced around the room. The melodious music filled the air as the intro played. After a while, the lyrics she had to sing glowed in pink.
"We were strangers starting out on a journey," Elphaba began in a soft voice.
Fiyero hollered. And she rolled her eyes as she went on to finish the first verse.
He knew she was shy, so he was so thankful that she agreed to do this with him. He watched as the technicolor glow of the screen illuminated her face. She was so stiff, and her eyes were transfixed on the moving words. Perfectionist, he thought. He was so mesmerized by her that he almost missed his cue.
They sang in perfect harmony—that is, if Fiyero hadn't scratched his voice with all the songs he sang earlier. He struggled to belt out the notes of his solos, and Elphaba laughed at him when he did. So he put his whole heart into it. He smiled when he saw her loosen up as the song progressed.
Soon, the music softened and slowed at the last chorus.
"Life is a road that I wanna keep going.
Love is a river, I wanna keep flowing."
Fiyero used his free hand to take hers, and they sang the last lines together.
"In the end, I wanna be standing
At the beginning with you."
The music faded, and the machine roared as it rolled out their score. But at that moment, he couldn't see or hear anything else. His mind was filled with nothing and no one but the woman in front of him.
Elphaba, his mind kept repeating—like water in a mill, rolling and flowing.
He cupped her cheek, and for the first time, she didn't pull away.
They locked eyes. Fiyero watched her closely as he continued to move slowly. After a few moments, he lowered his face. And he noticed her eyes flutter shut when they were only inches apart. The air that hung between them seemed to burst into flames, or roses, or a fountain of champagne. Odd how the richest images bloomed in the mind when the body itself was the most alert.
Their lips met—softly, gently, slowly. It was short and chaste, but suddenly his whole being was enveloped with nothing but her—her scent, her skin, her soft lips. It intoxicated him, even in only a brief blissful moment.
He rested his forehead on hers, as he gazed into her eyes again. It was like he could feel her soul mingle with his. For a moment, time seemed to stop; yet the clock continued to tick. Only one thought floated and raced and flooded the landscapes of his conscious mind—
He would never let her go.
Our parents actually just bought a karaoke plug-in for us at home. And it's all we've been doing while still stuck at quarantine haha. At the Beginning is my ultimate fave to sing lol.
