Summary: Miyako's always spun this way and that, wild and turbulent as a storm. But every storm needs a light cutting through it, and Miyako's finally found hers.
Miyako vibrated in joy at the sight of Hikari approaching, Tailmon doing a credible imitation of a cat walking next to her. She raised one hand and waved as they approached the table she sat at, and Hikari slid into one of the other seats.
"Thanks for coming," she blurted out, mentally flinching at the words. She really wanted to make a decent impression, then reminded herself that Hikari already knew her. She'd made her first impression already. Hikari knew more about her than a lot of other people did, and didn't seem repulsed by any of it.
"Of course I would!" Hikari replied with a warm smile, glancing over the menu, then eyes darting over to Miyako herself. "This is about the Jogress, isn't it?"Oh, how Miyako blushed. As a general rule she felt flighty and distracted by random butterflies all the time. But now when Hikari's eyes met hers, she could feel herself settling down, as if a light – Hikari herself – guided her to a safe harbor.
"Kind of," she admitted, much more relaxed than she'd been only moments earlier. "I want to be sure we get this thing right. It's – I've never done anything like it."
Hikari let out a little laugh. "Neither have I." She tilted her head back a trifle. "I think – well, I'm not sure."
"What is it?" Miyako wondered, but just being this close to Hikari made her wonder if she already knew the answer. Now that she had time to think on it, she had an idea. It just hadn't settled down in her head until now.
Hikari smiled. "I think we're going to have to figure it out as we go along. We – clicked. Not the way other people do, but in our way."
Miyako wasn't going to argue about that. She'd all but felt the mental click as Tailmon and Aquilamon Jogressed together that first time. It was only when they weren't around one another that she began to fret, worry, and flutter around like a bird ingesting illegal substances.
As if a part of her that she needed was there and not there all at the same time.
She returned her gaze to her tea cup and sipped a bit more. Poromon had a cup as well; the staff here didn't ask too many questions, and the one who'd served them asked Poromon what he wanted to drink with the same sort of courtesy used for Miyako herself. The same one approached now, to take Hikari and Tailmon's orders, while Miyako tried to get her thoughts in order.
"Ichijouji-kun and Daisuke," she said at last, turning her cup around in her hands. "They're partners too. Just not like us. They're – synced together." Slowly she put each thought together, tiny pieces fitting together as they never had before.
Hikari nodded, getting herself comfortable in the upholstered chair. "That's right."
"But our connection isn't like theirs." The two of them understood each other on an instinctive level, not quite in the way that the boys seemed to read one another's minds on a regular basis. She couldn't even begin to understand what that would be like.
"No. I think we're all going to be different in how we connect. I think " Hikari considered her words carefully and slowly, then shook her head. "I think that we're going to have to figure it all out on our own. We're similar, but not the same as they are. Takeru and Iori-kun will be different too."
It had been an open question before who the remaining four would Jogress with. That wasn't the case now. Truth to tell, Miyako didn't feel like complaining about it. She knew Iori pretty well, but she'd never had the kind of click with him that she did with Hikari. Hikari needed her, and she needed Hikari.
Together the two of them sat side by side, sipping at their tea. Tailmon and Poromon chattered quietly with each other, but Miyako's attention remained for the most part on Hikari. Even when she closed her eyes, she could feel that bright light shining so close to her, guiding her safely through the turbulent waters of her own emotions.
"Do you want to go somewhere else?" Miyako asked at last. "I mean, this is nice, but we can do other things. Maybe hit up the beach or something? Or do some shopping?"
Hikari sipped more on her tea. "All right. The more we get to know each other, the better, right?"
"Right!" Miyako wasn't going to rush, though. Hikari never seemed to rush and things got done. She didn't want this peaceful moment to end. She wanted to savor it for as long as she could, to keep it close to her heart for those times when she and Hikari couldn't be around one another.
She kind of hoped that Hikari wanted to feel whatever it was that she offered as well, and she would give it with all of her heart.
The End
Notes: I think I want to write more about these two together but before then, I'm going to rewatch 02 and that will take a while. Not to mention my multitude of other projects.
