Pepa lay in bed, cuddled up with her husband. Félix rested his hand on her swollen stomach. Pepa was nearing the end of her pregnancy, and excitement was bursting in the Casita. This baby was their third child, and they would have a baby boy. "We still need to name him," Félix said.
"Pedro," Pepa said.
"Pedro is Camilo's middle name, though," Félix said. "I like Antonio."
"Antonio?" Pepa questioned. "Where did you get that from?"
"I just like that name," Félix shrugged. Before the conversation could continue, the two of them smelled smoke. The two of them rushed out of their bedroom. A lot of smoke was coming from Julieta's bedroom. To the relief of Pepa and Félix, Julieta and her husband, Agustín, emerged from the room.
"Fire," Agustín shouted with a cough.
"Camilo and Dolores are still asleep," Pepa said. She looked through the smoke, but she couldn't see a thing. The smoke was too thick.
"I'll go grab them," Félix promised. "The smoke can't be good for the baby. You need to get out."
"I'm not leaving your or our nińos," Pepa argued.
"We'll be out soon," Félix promised. Julieta had to drag Pepa out of the house. Pepa tried to run back in, but her pregnant baby made it hard. She grabbed her stomach after taking a few steps.
"You have your baby to worry about," Julieta said. "Félix and your kids will be okay."
The two sisters heard an explosion inside the Casita.
Two days later, Pepa was finally able to meet her son. Sometime during the fire, Pepa passed out. At the hospital, they had to perform a c-section. Pepa was unable to leave her room for two days. Today, they finally let her go to the ICU to meet her only child left.
"There's your son," the nurse said. Pepa looked down at her tiny baby. The last piece of Félix she had left. For the first time since she woke up from surgery, Pepa let out a smile. Pepa promised nothing would happen to Antonio. She would keep him safe in her arms.
Her Antonio.
