This one is based on an injury I had when I decided it would be a good idea to sprint full speed down a very steep hill.
Intelligence was chasing a suspect when he ran through a hilly hiking trail. Hailey's foot slipped running down one of the steeper hills but she was ok. They got their suspect and finished up paperwork then went home for the day. Hailey's food hurt a little when she was getting ready for bed but she didn't think much of it. She went and got into bed, limping slightly. Jay noticed this and asked what was wrong.
"Hey why are you limping," jay asked concerned
" Yeah, my foot just hurts a little from the chase today. I think I pulled a muscle or something when I slipped going down the hill."
"Ok ill be right back," Jay said getting out of bed.
He went and got an ice pack, Advil, and some water.
"Here take some Advil I'm gonna put some ice on your foot," Jay said as he handed her the Advil and got the ice on her foot.
They cuddled for 20 minutes while Hailey iced her foot, then Jay went and put the ice pack back in the freezer and they fell asleep. The next morning when Hailey woke up her foot was sore. She got out of bed and went to go to the bathroom but as soon as she started walking towards the bathroom she got a sharp shooting pain in her foot that caused her to fall to the floor. Jay woke up from the thud and ran over to Haley when he saw Hailey sitting on the floor.
"Hey what happened are you ok are you hurt," jay asked
" Yeah I went to go to the bathroom and I got a sharp pain in my foot," Hailey replied.
" ok, I'll help you up and to the bathroom,'' Jay told her to help her stand up.
She tried to take a step but got the same pain in her foot and fell forward. Jay caught her this time and lifted her up and caught her and carried her into the bathroom. Once he got her settled he called will.
J hey man are you working right now?
W yeah why?
J Hailey slipped and hurt her foot during a chase yesterday. Last night she was a little sore so she took some Advil and iced her foot. When she woke up this morning she tried to walk to the bathroom and got a sharp pain in her foot that caused her to fall on the floor. She can't walk on that foot I had to carry her to the bathroom

Jay helped get Hailey ready and helped her out to the truck and drove to med. Once they got to med jay called will and told him where she was parked and he met them with a wheelchair and wheeled Hailey into a treatment room. Will ordered some X-rays to rule out any broken bones.
" ok, Hailey, I ordered an x-ray just to be sure I don't think you broke anything though. It sounds like you messed up your muscles and/or tendons in the side of your foot."
" ok thanks" Hailey replied
Will got her X-rays done and confirmed nothing was broken.
" ok, Hailey, nothing is broken. I want to take a closer look at your foot." will tell her
" ok" Hailey replied
" I'm going to feel the side of your foot and move it around a little" will inform them
"ok " Hailey replied grabbing jays hand
" squeeze my hand if it hurts babe," he told her
Will pressed on the side of her foot causing her to hiss and pull away and squeeze jays hand hard
"Sorry hails I wanna try moving it around a little now," Will told her apologetically
She was able to wiggle her toes and move her food up, down and side to side with no pain. The shooting pain came back when he had her point and flexed her foot.
" ok, Hailey you pulled your abductor hallucis which is a muscle in the side of your foot. I think you might've dislocated or torn a tendon as well. We can check for that with an ultrasound.
"Ugh ok" Hailey sighed
Will did the ultrasound and confirmed she had dislocated her peroneal tendon.
"So you dislocated your peroneal tendon. I am going to get someone down here from ortho to go over treatment with you" will inform them"
"uggh " Hailey groaned
" hey it's going to be ok," jay told her pulling her into a hug
5 minutes later a doctor from ortho came down.
"Hi, I'm Dr. Smith, I will be going over your treatment plan," he said, shaking Hailey's hand.
"Ok thank you" Hailey replied
"Ok so for your treatment first I am going to start by giving you 2 cortisone injections then I will put you in a splint. When you get home take the splint off and alternate between ice and heat. When you are not using ice or heat the splint must be on. You can take it off to shower but you need to be sitting. I would recommend alternating between Advil and Tylenol for the first couple of days depending on how you heal you might need to do physical therapy. When you are asleep sitting or laying down without ice or heat prop up your foot with a pillow. You will be in a brace with crutches for 6 weeks then just a brace for a while. You may need to wear the brace in the field."
" ok" Hailey replied trying not to cry while jay pulled her into a hug"
"ok I am going to do the cortisone injections, get you in a splint and get you on your way," Dr.smith told her.
Dr.smith came back a couple of minutes later with the injections and splint. He had her lay on her back on the bed. Jay went over to her head took her hand and started massaging her scalp
" ok, I'm going to get started now you'll feel a pinch and some burning." Dr.smith told her
"Squeeze my hand if it hurts babe," jay told her
" Ok here we go 1,2,3," Dr.smith said
Hailey whimpered, squeezed her eyes shut, and squeezed Jay's hand hard when she felt the pinch and burning.
"Ssh your ok I've got you just squeeze my hand" jay soothed
" ok time for the second one, 1,2,3" Dr smith said as he started the second injection
"Owwwww" Hailey cried out
" ssh just breathe I'm here it's ok squeeze my hand as hard as you need to jay soothed"
"I know I'm sorry I know those suck hopefully this is the only time you'll need to do that," Dr. smith said
He got her in the splint and gave her crutches and got her discharged. Hailey called Voight on the way home to let him know.

H hey sarge I'll be out for at least 6 weeks. I hurt my foot when I slipped yesterday and woke up this morning with shooting pain in my foot. I pulled my abductor hallucis muscle and dislocated my peroneal tendon. I'll be out for a week then on desk duty for at least 5 days. Med should be sending you and platt the note.
V ok I'm sorry Hailey I hope you feel better.
When they got home Jay got her an ice pack and some Advil. They watched TV for a couple of hours and alternated between ice and heat for Hailey's foot. They ordered Chinese food for dinner and ate it while watching movies. After they were done watching movies, Jay carried Hailey into the bathroom and drew her a bath. Once she was done with her bath she alternated between ice and heat for a bit then, Jay put her splint on and they went to bed holding each other. The next day Hailey was in a lot of pain so they repeated the process of alternating Advil and Tylenol and heat and ice. They watched movies all day again and cuddled. They were both happy they got some time to recharge even though it was not under the best circumstances. On the third day, jay had court so Hailey watched chick flicks till Trudy brought her lunch around 2
" Hey kiddo, how are you feeling?" Trudy asked.
" pretty sore but better than yesterday" Hailey replied
They ate their lunch and talked for a bit until Trudy got called out to assist in shutting down traffic for an accident. Jay picked up pizza on the way home and they watched movies again and fell asleep in each other's arms. Hailey felt much better when she woke up; she wasn't in as much pain. Later that night they had the team over to watch the football game. Everyone hugged Hailey, asked her how she was feeling and told her they hoped she felt better. Hailey went back to work on desk duty the following Monday. 6 weeks after the accident she got cleared to go back into the felt but she had to wear a brace for the first 2 weeks. 8 weeks after her injury she was fully recovered.
