Ramona sat in the bed with her knees pulled up to her chin. Rays from an early morning navy blue sky hit her through the windows covered by clear curtains.
The smell of incense, meant to relax her into resting, was heavy in the air, and yet she remains alert. It was the third sleepless night she had this week and it was not because Goro was out late with work at the company, nor was it because she still had not adapted to the silent eeriness of their new Westminster home, instead of her old Newham flat.
No, instead it was over something else. Something she had managed to shake off so far, but now could not ignore any longer, something that she needed desperately tell her husband. Every time she opened her mouth to bring it up, her stomach tightened and body froze. She could not muster enough courage to let the words out and would often say something else or an impulsive it's nothing.
She heard the knob to the bedroom turn and Goro walks in, suit crumpled and dark circles in his eyes. A soft, tired smile playing on his lips as he glanced at his wife.
"What're you doing up?" He asked, legitimately curious.
"Oh, I just couldn't sleep." She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "More importantly, how were business with the Chinese?"
He crawled into the bed bringing her into his arms. "Just fine, but that's not important. It seems to me that you've not sleeping a lot these days. Are you feeling alright?"
The woman sighed tiredly, snuggling her head deeper into his chest. "I just have a lot on my mind."
"Anything you want to share with the class?" He asks with a smirk.
Mona let out of low chuckle. His smile faded a bit, realizing she was once again pushing whatever it was that was bothering her away. He had noticed she was distracted and it went beyond the sleepless nights. Every time he looked at her or watched her open her mouth to speak, her confidence shifted into fear and anxiety followed by disappointment and defeat.
Goro would have thought that, after two years of marriage, she would feel more than comfortable sharing whatever it was that was bothering her or what was on her mind. Though, he supposed, some things were harder to say than others, and so tried to be patient about it.
"Ramona, love." He spoke up. "I would hope you know that whatever it is that's bothering you or keeping you up at night, you can tell me."
She lifted her head, her chest growing heavy as the knot in her stomach tightened painfully and she realised that it is now or never. She sighed, closing her eyes.
"I want a baby." The blue-haired woman said on a breath.
She opened one eye to see her husband smiling widely at her. Her fears began to diminish, but she remains hesitant to rule anything out.
"Say it again, please, but I want you to look at me when you do it." He told her.
She opened the other eye, lips pulled back. "Goro, my love, I want a baby."
His smile grew larger, heart swelling. His wife wanted to carry his son.
"Why didn't you just tell me?" He chuckles.
Ramona playfully scoffed.
"I didn't know how you'd react! It's not something like 'Hey, let's get a dog' or something. This is a child. It's nine months of pregnancy, hours of delivery, and then God knows how long of sleepless nights and then 18 years of being responsible for another human. It's asking for another commitment among other commitments that you have going on." She sighed, her tone shifting from anxious exasperation to quiet embarrassment. "I just didn't think you'd want a baby right now. Or, like, ever."
Goro turned over to her, caressing her cheeks in his hands. "How long have we known each other?"
"Four years." She responded.
"How long have we been married?" The man asked again.
"Two."
"Then, my dearest, don't you think that if I didn't want kids, that I would've told you or brought it up before we got married?" He argues, almost gloating at her unreasonable conclusion.
She shrugged. "Well, we never discussed kids at all. I kind of expected that we would talk about it when you felt comfortable."
His smile faltered ever-so-slightly, knowing she had a point. He enjoyed flaunting emotional maturity over her while it lasted.
"Alright, fair enough." He gave in, chuckling. "I do want kids. I've always wanted them. When I married you, I did so with the understanding that you'd be their mother. Would you like to add something to the conversation or are we on the same page now?"
"No, no, it's fine. I want kids, too, and for you to be their father." She chuckled.
Goro smiles and kisses her forehead. "Good."
His confirmation was enough to send a massive wave of relief over Ramona, washing away most of her anxiety. There was still one issue, however.
"But what about your company?" She asked, her tone fearful.
"What about it?" The man mumbled, absent-minded.
"I mean, when I said I wanted you to be my child's father, I meant it in more than in just a genetic sense." She explains. "I want them to get to know you and get to spend time with you. Is this something that you can do with the hectic routine you keep?"
He shrugged. "We'll figure it out."
Her eyebrows furrowed. "You can't just take a vacation and that's that, can you?"
"Oh, but I can. I'm the boss, my sweet wife. I can do whatever I please." He smirks, haughty. "I can even resign entirely."
Mona sat up, shocked. "You would just give up the company? No questions asked?"
"The company won't always need me. Any good business goes through various cycles of leadership, and there will come the day when the best for everyone is that I just step down." He says, calmly and decidedly. "Besides, I'm not giving up shit. Even if I resign, I'm still going to be the largest shareholder and the one with the controlling interest over it."
"But you love your job! You love that company. Are you just going to leave that behind?" The woman looks up into his eyes, almost pleadingly. "I know I press you sometimes and that we have that whole DS thing going on, but I want you to be happy. Making life decisions based solely in what I want doesn't seem like the surest way to get that."
"Money means nothing if it's not put towards things that make me happy. You're the one who taught me that, love. I enjoy what I do and I don't want to stop, but if you see any billionaire out there, none of them work full schedules. That's for losers." He took her hands and kissed them. "I want to be a father, too, and I can't be CEO forever if I'm going to have a kid who needs me. There's lots of things that interest me and lots of avenues through which I can pursue them. I don't need to work eighty hours a week just to feel fulfilled."
She smiled and placed a hand on his cheek, before leaning in to give him a chaste kiss. "I love you."
"I love you too." He responded, before diving in again to catch her mouth on his.
Goro went to pull her under him when Ramona pulled back.
"Are you sure about this? I'm ovulating." She asked, placing a hand on his chest.
He smiled. "Absolutely."
Then, they proceed to dedicate their morning toward bringing the new phase of their lives into existence.
