"They say your home is where your heart is but what if my heart is six feet underground, with you."
Desire had felt it when Despair left them.
They had woken up to a sharp, stabbing sensation - as if someone had driven a stake through their chest.
Dying was a mostly foreign concept to the Endless, but they had known instantly that something was Wrong.
They had been the first one at Despair's side, the one who watched the last bits of life leave her eyes. When the other's arrived they had still been clinging to her.
It had been an ugly scene.
They had lunged at Death when they saw her. Kicked and clawed at Disaster when he held them down while they took her away. Screamed and cursed at the others when they attempted to console them.
None of them could ever understand.
None of them had any right to cry.
They hadn't loved her like Desire had.
They had barely known her at all.
The world is still taking shape.
It's them, their older siblings, and the annoying one that came not long after.
There's nothing much to desire yet- or to despair over.
With nothing much to do they spend time just walking the earth together.
One dresses in golden-trimmed silk and sandals made from the finest leather. The other remains nude save for the rope she ties her hair with.
One talks away about this and that while the other remains silent- yet always listens.
Their siblings attempt to call, and they never answer.
They can't stand to look at any of them.
Her blood is still on their hands.
It's brown now. Dried and curdled.
They don't wash it off.
It's like still having a piece of her.
At least that's what they tell themselves.
The worst part was the sense of emptiness that lingered even as time bleed into itself.
As if their heart had been ripped out and the gaping wound left open for maggots to eat away at.
The threshold they haven't left since that night pulsates around them.
The universe is young and quiet.
Two newborns lay in the middle of a reflecting pool.
It's their birthday.
One wakes up first and looks at their reflection.
Eyes like coins stare back at them.
A gorgeous thing- Beautiful in a way that's timeless, Ethereal.
They watch their reflection for hours.
They feel a stirring when the other awakes.
She is striking.
Rolls of chalky skin not yet scarred.
Dark frizzy hair that went in all directions.
Eyes the color of rain.
They're drawn to each other instantly.
She drags a hand down their slender torso.
They run their fingers through tangled curls.
A word flashes through their minds.
It's new. It's lovely.
Twin.
They stare blankly out onto their realm.
After some time, they feel its empty vastness beginning to mock them.
Reminding them that for the first time in their existence- they are alone.
