It was close to midnight when I heard knocking at my door. I turned over and tried to ignore it, but the knocking continued. I grumbled as I stumbled to my feet and made my way to the door. 'This better be good.' I thought to myself as I glanced through the peephole. I rubbed my eyes and then looked out a second time. Rowen stood there waiting. I opened the door. "You could have called."
"Sorry, I thought it would have been better if I stopped by in person. Mind if I come inside?"
I made room and watched as Rowen entered. I shut the door behind him. "What's with the late-night visit? Oh, wait, I'm guessing Ryo and Sage got a hold of you and filled you in on what happened."
Rowen nodded, "Yeah," He glanced behind me and saw Kaye asleep in my bedroom. "Am I interrupting?"
"Huh? Oh, ah no, she's staying the night because I asked her to. I offered her the bed, I'm on the couch." I stretched, "It isn't as comfortable as I thought."
Rowen turned his attention back to me, "How's she doing?"
"Kaye is better now. She was a bit shaken up earlier. We talked about what happened with her at the office and with us at the Dynasty." I replied as I walked back to the couch and gestured for Rowen to take a seat.
Rowen studied me before he spoke, "So who do you think they were behind the kidnapping attempt?"
"We suspect it might have been Anubis. But she never got a good look at the guy because he wore a full mask and gloves. But the clothes she saw were fancy, something a fixer would wear. But the problem with that is there are tons of fixers in the city. So it could have been anyone." I grumbled a bit.
Rowen leaned back with a frown, "I'm surprised no one else saw anything. If they did, they're not talking. Why wouldn't someone come forward if there was a possible witness?"
I shook my head, "No idea, usually, there are not a lot of people out and about around the office at the time it happened. The kidnapper watched the area for a while and then made plans after he confirmed a few things. But my question is, how did he know Kaye would be alone in the office? Because Anubis was at the Dynasty when you and I were there. At least, he was but I did see him leave early."
Rowen was in deep thought as he was silent, some time passed before he voiced his thoughts. "Let's say it was Anubis, it's going to be hard to prove for sure. Unless..."
I frowned as I looked over at him, "Unless what? Rowen."
"You more in likely won't like it. What if Kaye went with you to the Dynasty when you go for your training tomorrow," Rowen suggested. He could see I wasn't exactly thrilled about what he said.
"Are you crazy?" I asked him and then glanced back towards my bedroom. My volume was louder than I intended. I glanced over towards my bedroom and saw Kaye was still sleeping. I sighed in relief and then looked back at him. "That's not the best of ideas."
"Sorry. Would you rather her be where you can see her, or would you rather have her be alone and have him make a second attempt?" Rowen asked as he studied me, "Well?"
I closed my eyes and rubbed the bridge of my nose with a sigh. Then I opened my eyes as I lowered my hand. "I'll have to sleep on it, but I'll make sure to talk with her in the morning about your idea."
Rowen nodded, "Fair enough that's all I ask. Well, I suppose I better let you get some sleep. I won't be at the Dynasty tomorrow. I have to go out of town, but I'll be back tomorrow night. Then we could check out the Dynasty after hours." He stood and walked to the door.
I rose to my feet and walked behind him and smirked, "So then you're fine with a late-night B and E?"
Rowen chuckled, "If it's to find out they're using the Dynasty as some sort of front, then yeah, I'm fine with it. I'll talk with you later." He opened the door and then waved as he walked to his car.
I watched as he got in and drove away. I then shut and locked the front door as I turned around and walked to my bedroom. I leaned against the door frame and watched Kaye sleep for a bit. I knew Rowen had a point, it might be better if Kaye came with me to the Dynasty instead of her being alone. But I won't think about it at the moment, I needed to get some sleep. So I turned around and walked back to the couch and laid down. It took a bit, but I did finally succumb to sleep.
The rest of the night flew by, the next thing I knew I could smell the scent of food cooking. I sat up and looked towards the kitchen. Kaye was there searching the fridge for something. I smiled, breakfast smelled delicious. I heard my stomach rumble. I stood and walked to the counter. "Morning."
Kaye turned around and looked at me as she gave a small smile. "Morning, Breakfast isn't quite ready."
"It's fine, but what you do have done so far smells good. Mind if I ask you why you're making breakfast though?" I asked even though I'm kind of glad she did. It saved me from making it today.
"You had me stay here last night. So by making breakfast, is my way of saying thank you," Kaye replied as she continued cooking.
I grabbed some bacon and tasted it, "Rowen stopped by last night."
Kaye raised a brow at me, "What was the reason for his visit?"
"Ryo and Sage filled him in on what happened and he wanted to come over to see how you were doing. Then I told him what we talked about with our suspicion about Anubis." I replied as I studied her. I saw Kaye tense up for a split second and then relaxed. Kaye was not over what happened yesterday, she was putting on a show for me. She didn't need to.
"What else did Rowen say?" Kaye asked as she finished making the rest of the breakfast and started plating for both of us.
I watched as she placed my plate in front of me and then she handed me something to drink. I waited until she had her meal in front of her before speaking. "Rowen suggested you come to the Dynasty with me today. Then you won't be alone. I slept on it and I thought it sounded like a good idea. I told him I'd discuss it with you first. So would you feel comfortable coming with me to the Dynasty?"
Kaye frowned a bit, "I'm not afraid of being alone Kento."
"I never said you were. It's more for my peace of mind anyway." I explained studying her. "Especially now, since we, well you know."
She raised a brow at me with a slight smirk, "Since we what, Kento? You were the one who made the first move last night. You didn't kiss me to help me get over what almost happened at the office. There was some other reason behind the kissing."
"Of course there was, and you know the reason as well as I do. Look, we're getting sidetracked from what we're going to be doing. I would appreciate it if we would get back on track with the case." I saw Kaye flinch back a bit from what I said. I felt a twist of guilt in my heart. Right now we do have a case to work on. We can't allow our emotions to get in the way. We're starting to figure things out between us.
Kaye looked back down at her plate and continued to finish her breakfast. Once she finished, Kaye stood and took her plate, and put the other dishes in the sink.
"Look, Kaye, If I hurt your feelings with what I said, I apologize," I stated as continued to watch her.
Kaye shook her head, "No, you're right Kento. We have a job to do. "I'll wait for you in the living room." She replied walking past me.
I wanted to explain myself more to her. How? I'm more who works through things by action, I'm not much for words. It's easier for me that way, always has been, always will be. I'll make it up to her someday. Right now, we have a case to wrap up. I looked back at my plate and finished my breakfast. I stood up and brought the rest of the dishes to the sink and set them inside. Then walked to the living room where Kaye waited. I grabbed my keys, and the two of us walked out towards my car and we were on our way to the Dynasty.
