Rowen and I by this time were already at the Dynasty. To be more specific, we were on the roof. Rowen was at the skylight getting the gear set for our repel down.
While he continued to secure both lines, there was something I couldn't shake. A feeling. It was a feeling I didn't like. This feeling bothered me deep down to my bones. I knew I could count on Ryo and Sage to watch over Kaye. I have no reason to worry or do I? I know it isn't that concern which worries me.
"Kento." Rowen frowned when he saw me glaring at the moon, "Hey, Kento!" He rose to his feet and walked over and jabbed me with his elbow.
I whirled around and growled at him as my eyes narrowed. When I saw it was Rowen I sighed a bit and relaxed, "Gomen."
Rowen frowned, "What's with you? It's like you're not even here."
I rubbed the back of my head and then lowered my hand, "Nothing."
Rowen raised a brow towards me. He didn't believe me in the least. If the roles were reversed and he was acting the way I am right now, I wouldn't believe him either.
"You still want to do this right?" Rowen asked, "You're not having second thoughts? This was your plan after all."
I nodded, "Of course I still want to. There is no way I'm having second thoughts. Let's do this."
Rowen got a hold of my jacket as I started to pass him. He saw I stopped and glanced at him as he kept his grip. Rowen saw me looking down at his hand and then back at him.
"Let go." I said, "What's the big idea?"
"Look, I'm not looking to have a tangle with you on the roof. Especially since we have the same agenda. I don't think you have your mind totally on what we're going to do." Rowen replied as he didn't even flinch from my warning glare. "I'm going to ask you one more time. What's going on? You're not totally committed to this. Something is bothering you."
I sighed and then relaxed as I felt his grip being released from my jacket. "Alright, yeah, I am distracted. I have this feeling and I can't seem to shake it. Something is wrong."
Rowen studied me, "Come on Kento, you and I both know Ryo, Sage, and Kaye can all take care of themselves. They'll be fine."
"I know, you're right, but deep down, I just can't shake the feeling something is wrong. But we need to get what we came for, besides, Kaye, Ryo, and Sage can get the evidence she hid, and they'll get it to the station." I replied with a slight nod.
Rowen studied me, I couldn't tell if he believed me or not, but it didn't matter now. We had a job to do. Rowen and I walked to the skylight and picked up both ropes as he took off the lock. Rowen then pulled it up and back, making the opening for us. We glanced at one another and then started to propel down into the Dynasty. It didn't take long for the two of us to make it to the ground. We untied ourselves and then took a quick glance around the room. No one seemed to be here at the moment, but the nagging feeling in my gut was telling me something different.
I glanced at Rowen and then the two of us made a quick run to Kayura's office. We took the stairs two at a time and then made it to the top. I kept watching as Rowen worked on the lock. When I heard a satisfying click, I knew we were going inside. Rowen went first and I followed. We took out our flashlights and started searching the office. We made our way to the bookcase against the far wall and checked out the floor. Kaye was right, now it was up to us to find the lever or whatever to open up the secret passage to the elevator. We started on opposite ends of the center section and started pulling one book after another.
"Hey Kento, I think I found it," Rowen stated as he pulled on a book and the door opened as it revealed the secret elevator.
I smirked as I punched him in the shoulder, "Nice work! Ready to see what's down there?"
Rowen nodded and we entered, the elevator door closed and we felt the elevator going down on its own. "Be ready for anything Kento, we have no idea of what we're going to find once we stop."
"I'm more than ready," I replied as the elevator stopped and the door slowly opened. We stepped out and the elevator door closed behind us. I looked around in awe, "All of this was under the Dynasty this whole time? Was the Ancient dirty too?" We started walking around and taking in everything. It was huge, actually, huge was an understatement. I never knew this was under the exclusive fight club. I started to wonder if anyone did. It was the perfect cover. I saw an underground parking garage not too far. As we continued to walk we came across a few science labs. I had no idea what kind of experiments they were doing, but maybe one of them had something to do with the drug Rowen told us about earlier. In a far off room was a printing press of some kind, counterfeit more in likely.
"From what I can see, I don't think the Ancient was dirty. I don't think he knew about this." Rowen stated as we continued towards one of the labs. "I'm thinking he came across it and he went to confront his granddaughter about it, he was killed."
I glanced at him with a slight frown, "What makes you say that?" I didn't see or hear Rowen pulls out his gun, before I knew it Rowen had it pointed at my face. I knew I should have listened to my gut, damn. I narrowed my eyes at him. "What's the big idea, Rowen?"
Behind me I heard footsteps coming towards us, "You're the flatfoot, figure it out." I glanced back and saw Kayura standing there with Anubis, Sekhmet, and Cale. "Damn it Rowen, I thought we were friends. Why did you betray me like this?"
"I have my reasons," Rowen replied in a flat tone as he kept his gun on me and walked next to Kayura. He leaned in a bit and kissed her on the cheek, and then looked at me.
I couldn't believe it, why didn't I see it before? Damn! "You're married to Kayura."
Kayura laughed, "Now, you get it. Finally, it took you long enough." She glanced at her husband, "You weren't kidding, he does have a hard head. No wonder it was so easy to get him to take the case."
I clenched my hands and narrowed my eyes as a growl escaped my throat. i was about to charge them but the sound of Rowen's gun clicking stopped me. "So which one of you took out the Ancient?"
Kayura shook her head, "It doesn't matter. What does though is how we are going to get rid of you and your partner. Speaking of which, if Badamon is successful, he should arrive with your partner soon enough."
"Ryo and Sage won't allow Badamon to even get close to Kaye!" I spat as i kept my eyes on them.
"They will be dealing with their own problem. Those two won't be able to prevent Badamon from accomplishing his goal." Cale bragged with a smirk.
"What are you talking about?" I shot back at him.
"I guess they'd find out sooner or later. Might as well tell him now since he won't be living much longer anyway. You see, your two friends, they're fighting Dais." Anubis started to explain. He could see I didn't believe him. "See, we faked his death so it would be easier for him to work. When you and your partner were busy trying to keep an eye on us. Dais was the one working behind the scenes."
My eyes narrowed a little more, "So then Dais was the one who tried to kidnap Kaye back at our office that day, not Anubis."
Anubis gave a small nod, "You're right, I had him borrow my clothes since we are similar in body type, it wouldn't be hard for him to pass as me. Especially since he had his face covered."
"Why you..." I started to approach again but then stopped when Rowen shot at the floor right in front of me. I stopped and glared at him.
Rowen looked at me, his eyes gleamed, "Consider it a warning. The next one won't be."
Sekhmet walked behind them and brought back a metal chair. He carried it behind me and set it down. Sekhmet then put his hands on my shoulders and shoved me down onto it. He held me down as Anubis and Cale walked to Rowen.
With his free hand Rowen pulled out a set of cuffs and handed them to Anubis. The two walked towards me and cuffed my arms behind me, which secured me to the chair. I tried to yank out but it wasn't doing any good. I watched as the three of them walked back over towards Kayura and Rowen.
"Might as well make ourselves comfortable while we wait." Kayura stated as she leaned up against Rowen.
"I trusted you man, after being friends for a long time, how could you betray me like this?" I asked while keeping my sights on Rowen. "Didn't our friendship mean anything?"
Rowen chuckled a bit, "Kento, times change=. People change. It can't be helped. Kayura was able to offer me a better life, and well in this day and age, I would be a fool not to take her on her offer."
I raised a brow at him, "What makes you believe she wouldn't turn on you someday?"
"Simple, because I know he wouldn't turn on me. Plus, with his brain and connections, as well as my set up we will have the run of the city by the end of the year." Kayura explained.
Rowen studied me, "For a long time, you've worked solo on your cases. Sure, time to time you'd have Sage and Ryo help out, but it wasn't until you brought Kaye under your wing is when I started to see changes in you Kento. They were subtle but still there. I've always wondered why you took Kaye on as a partner. But the night I met up with you at the Torrent, and she was wearing that lounge gown and singing on stage. It came together. I watched you, Kento. You couldn't keep your eyes off of her the entire time. I bet you even fantasized about the two of you together. You took Kaye on so you'd be able to bang her whenever you wanted. Not, that I blame you of course."
My blood boiled when I heard Rowen says what he just did. I lurched towards him, my eyes gleaming in anger. I wasn't able to get very far because of my predicament, but he knew right then and there he got to me. Damn again.
Anubis smirked, "Looks like you hit a nerve."
"Seems so," Rowen replied as he smiled. He took a glance at his watch, "It won't be long now. Badamon will arrive with your dame, and the evidence." Just as Rowen finished speaking Badamon drove up and parked.
Badamon shut off the car and got out. He glanced over towards the group, "Seems like the party started already."
"Were you able to bring the other guest?" Kayura asked as she watched Badamon reach inside the car and pulled the trunk release. He walked over and opened it.
"Of course," Badamon replied as he motioned for Cale to come over.
Cale walked to the opened trunk and leaned in as he yanked Kaye out of the trunk. He grinned at her and then grabbed onto her arm and yanked Kaye towards them. Once they made it in front of me, Cale whirled Kaye around and then he wrapped his arms around her and pulled Kaye in close to him.
Kaye winced in disgust when she felt Cale run one of his hands along her body slowly towards the handle of her bag, which contained our evidence. He whipped it off of her and tossed it to Kayura. He then brought his arm back around her again.
I growled as I glared at Cale. I started to fight against the cuffs. I could feel them starting to cut into me. I didn't care about the blood starting to run down my wrists, I was enraged about this monster having his hands on my girl. "Get your hands off of her now!"
Cale laughed at my demand his eyes gleamed in pleasure as he continued to hold her against himself.
Rowen walked towards me and then brought his gun back and slammed it across my head. When he saw it didn't phase me, he struck me on the side of my head a second time. The second strike slowed my struggling down as I felt the pain radiating from my head as well as the blood flowing down. "Enough already. Kento, I'm disappointed, I thought you'd be better than this. But you were weakened by a dame. That's too bad, I had such high hopes for you." Rowen stated as he backed away from me when he saw I stopped fighting.
My breathing started to labor a bit, glancing at him, "Heh, you're a fine one to talk. But I think you were suckered in way before me, blue."
Rowen cocked his gun again, he pointed it at me. He could see I wasn't intimidated in the least.
Badamon walked over, "Dais should have those two flatfoots finished by now. He took the drug before I started to chase the dame. It's just too bad we'll have to lose Dais for real this time. But it doesn't matter, he served his purpose. Once the drug is finished so is he."
Kayura nodded as she finished checking on the evidence. She saw it was all there, "Oh well, a loss of a fighter. I can always replace him. I do believe my husband will a better replacement."
Rowen smirked as he kissed his wife on the side of her face. "It'll be a nice change of pace. I was getting tired of being a government man." He brought his gun up and started to tap his chin in thought. "Hmm, which one is going to die first?"
Anubis walked to another part of the room and brought over a second chair and set it next to mine. He motioned for Cale.
Cale nodded as he unwrapped his arms from her and gripped her arm as he forced her to the chair. He shoved her down onto the seat and then took another rope Badamon handed to him and secured her arms to it. Cale reached forward and tipped Kaye's face up towards him. "You should have taken me up on my offer for the first time we met upstairs."
Kaye closed her eyes and whipped her head away from him. Kaye bit back a yelp when she felt him jerk her head back. Her eyes shot open as she saw him with a feral grin on his face.
"Spirited, I like that in my women." He reached towards Kaye's face and cupped it as he rubbed his thumb against her cheek. "It's too bad you're refusing me and chose that rockhead next to you instead." Cale let go of Kaye and backed away from her.
"We'll let the two of you say your goodbye before your lives' end." Kayura said as Anubis and Cale rejoined them.
I looked over towards her, "Kaye..."
Kaye slowly turned her attention towards me. She had tears threatening to fall, but Kaye was fighting to keep them back. "Kento...I..."
"And that's time. Let's finish these two off then we can get back to business. We don't have all night." Kayura stated as she interrupted us. She looked over towards her husband, "Rowen, would you do the honor?"
Rowen nodded and then readied his gun. He raised it, took aim as he started to pull the trigger, then everything literally went black. Loud banging and voices radiated the underground structure. Yelling came from every direction. "This is a raid! Everyone get your hands up!" As soon as the announcement was stated the backup generator kicked in and I couldn't believe what I saw.
"Ryo! Sage! Man, I'm glad to see the two of you." I felt relief kicking in as the two of them approached us along with a few other Gmen with their weapons drawn. I never saw so many in one place.
Rowen lowered his gun and holstered it, "Nice timing, I was wondering when you were going to make it."
"Yeah, well Dais being juiced as he was didn't help matters any. We barely won that fight, luckily, your buddies came and helped us out. Dais is dead though." Sage replied as he and Ryo stood behind us.
"Don't you two know how to stay out of trouble?" Ryo asked with a small smirk as he watched while the other Gmen were taking Kayura, Badamon and the others into custody.
Rowen got behind Kaye and started to untie her from the chair and then untied her arms. He was a bit hesitant about uncuffing me. To be honest, I'd be hesitant too if the roles were switched.
"Wait, I thought..." I started to say as my mind whirled about the situation.
Rowen looked at me, "Gomen, I didn't mean to deceive you like this Kento. I apologize to you too Kaye. I should have known it was going to be taken this far. I guess I was too blinded to believe it."
Kaye looked between me and Rowen, she knew there was a lot more to what's going on but at the moment.
"I thought Kayura was your wife? So is she or isn't she?" I asked as Rowen finally freed me from the cuffs.
Rowen nodded, "Yes, Kayura is my wife. But I had to make her believe I was still on her side by thinking I was playing the two of you. I know no amount of apologizing could mend what happened between us but maybe someday..." The next thing Rowen knew he was on the ground holding onto the side of his face and I towering over him with my fists clenched.
I felt Kaye trying to pull me away from him. All I could do was glare at him for everything he put us through with this investigation. I should have known, a government man is always a government man. No matter who is involved, no matter what it takes they get their man, or in this case, woman. True enough, Rowen's probably hurting on the inside by busting his own wife, but those are the breaks when he agreed to do it. So I might feel bad for him in that aspect, a little, maybe. But it wasn't worth it. Rowen got his bust, and Kaye and I solved our case, we were done and it was time for us to leave.
Ryo and Sage helped Rowen to his feet as they watched Kaye and I take our leave. "Think he'll ever forgive us?"
Rowen watched a bit longer and then turned around as he saw other Gmen gathering every speck of evidence in the underground facility. "Eventually, give them some time. They'll come around when they're ready. In the meantime, let's help get the rest of it bagged and tagged." He walked away from Ryo and Sage as he started helping with the evidence gathering.
Ryo and Sage glanced at one another and then back towards the direction Kaye and I were. They could see an EMT was working on Kaye's leg and another one with my head.
Once the EMTs were finished, they tried to get us into the ambulance so we could go to the hospital to get checked out. After arguing, we climbed further inside the back of the ambulance and were driven to the nearest hospital.
About a month later things were starting to get back to normal. Well, as normal as things could get when you're a gumshoe. We found a temporary office to set up in, as well as starting off with small cases to start rebuilding our agency. Every so often Ryo and Sage would drop by to see how we were doing. Rowen he'd call every once in a while but not very often. He probably thought I was still angry with him, he was right. But not as much as a month ago. Kaye and I, well, after that case, we became closer than ever to the point we were married not too long after. I know most people don't get a happy ending in this type of situation. But the fight was worth it, so worth it.
It was a day, not like any other...A day when she walked into my life...
