The Shape Of A Pear
I thought I had the introduction in the bag - all I had to do was jump out, explain myself and then make friends with most of the gladers and gain their trust. Because humans are totally predictable. Yet I was standing like I was superglued to the floor and still in the moist, dark hellhole of the lift. The plan had already gone to shit and I wasn't even out of the box yet. Not like I could get out on my own, the crates were way more fragile than I expected and there was no way I was risking stepping on those.
The familiar ones pushed through the leering crowd, puzzled silence consuming their expressions. Alby was clearly the most confused out of all of them, which was hardly surprising. He was the justice and order guy, after all. Though for his lack of interjection, it may as well have been a zoo enclosure because of all the damn staring.
"My name is... er, what was I gonna say again? Fuck." I could already feel my veins throbbing beneath my pasty english complexion.
"Look, Greenie, this is normal. None of us could remember anything when we first arrived either." Alby's words were about as kind as I expected, but didn't apply to me. I might as well have been a sentient pear; that was certainly mirrored in the way this encounter had progressed so far.
"Alby, I 'preciate the sentiment, but I'm just incompetent, not an amnesiac." His dark-skinned arm that had stretched helpfully to my aid wobbled slightly as his face morphed into a well of stunned baffling. I took his hand, planted my good foot on the side of the box and heaved myself onto the grass to a soundtrack of questions. Just how I planned it, not at all awkward for anyone involved. Scrambling to my feet, I dusted the dirt off my worn, grey trousers and tried to conceal the hint of derisiveness in my otherwise cheesy grin.
"Let's just call me Bea, an' I have a shit tonne of explainin' to do"
Author's Note: I'll keep it short and sweet this time; hope you enjoyed, have a great day wherever you are in the world :)
