Chapter 1
Emmett POV
Although it took me nearly three months to make this decision, here I was, sitting in my Jeep, crossing the border into the town of Forks. It was nearly 10pm, so the roads were mostly empty. I parked the car in a small parking lot near the street, thinking about what to do first. I really wanted to check up on Bella first thing, but it would be wiser to go hunting before I saw her.
I never had a problem controlling my thirst near her, although she smells very good. Nevertheless, I decided on going hunting and left my car. I smelled the forest I loved so much, but there was a scent nearby that made me sick: wet dog. This was very bad, the wolves must be back for a while now. I had to look out for them, running into one on accident really was not a great idea.
I took off in the opposite direction of the dog stink and towards the sound of a huge, beating heart and the smell of grizzly, my favorite. I was in no mood to play around, so I tore out its throat, drinking until the animal was sucked dry. Quickly I hid the evidence of me being there und ran back to my car, pulling back onto the road towards Bella's house.
I parked the car far enough away so no one sleeping would hear it and ran the rest of the way. Once there, I gazed up towards her open window. I could hear her heart beating slowly and rhythmically, she already must have been asleep. The stink of wet dog was very strong around her whole house, it almost looked like she was friends with them. "Typically Bella, one kind of monster leaves her behind and the next kind stands right at her doorstep" I told myself, lowly chuckling. A short while I thought about how she could have landed herself in this position when I heard a piercing scream, coming from the direction of her room. I jumped up her window as fast as I could, ready to take out any danger lurking in the dark. Looking around, I could see only Bella, thrashing around and screaming der lungs out. It broke my heart seeing her like that, but there was no time to act as I hear her father's steps rushing down the hall. I quickly hid in her closet, right in time for her father to open the door and run to her side.
"Bella, Bella! Bella, wake up, it's just a dream! Again, just a dream, please wake up!" he exclaimed, shaking her roughly by the shoulders, chanting her name again and again. It broke my heard even more seeing her like this, not waking up and screaming her lungs out, pleading again and again not to leave her and crying out Edward's name over and over. I've never seen her like this and nearly cried out in relief as she sat up abruptly, flinging herself in her father's arms. She was sobbing, but awake and no longer in her horrible dream.
She sobbed as her father held her, assuring her that it was only the same bad dream again. Wait – What?! The same dream? Does she have dreams like this more often, waking up screaming and crying?! The weight of the world sank down on my shoulders as I realized what we have done to her. I vowed at myself that I would keep my little sister save, following her to see with my own eyes what we have done and to help her as good as I was able to.
The following days I kept an eye on her and I saw what we truly have done. Bella was only a shell of her former self, she cried most of the day and screamed in her dreams at night. She went to school, home, sat there staring out of her bedroom window. She tried to call Jacob Black and then she slept. She didn't eat, she lost too much weight already. It almost looked like she is waiting for her death to come. I didn't know how this could've happened; didn't Edward explain to her why we were leaving? That it was for her own safety? Didn't she want to move on and live her life? Two times I followed her to the treaty line as she left for the reservation. I couldn't follow her there, so I waited in the tree line for her truck to return, which happend really quick both times, to quick for a friendly visit.
Nearly a week after my arrival I needed to hunt. I decided to go around noon, so Bella would be home from school when I came back from my trip. I hunted quickly, taking down two small bears and a mountain lion on the way back. I took the time to go home to our old house to shower and change my clothes before going back to Bella, I really wanted to knock on her door today an tell her I'm back. I would never leave her alone again.
It was nearly 3pm, so I headed out and ran to Bella's house. As I approached, I heard no heartbeat inside the house, so I sniffed in hopes of a scent trail. Bella should be home for nearly 1,5 hours now, where did she go? Back to the reservation? When I found her trail, it led towards the woods. I followed it quickly and silently, hoping I wouldn't scare Bella when she saw me approaching. A few minutes later, I smelled more scents, and if I had a heart I would've had a heart attack right now. I smelled the stink of more than one wolf, but more important the smell of a vampire I knew: Laurent. I fell into a full sprint and reached the clearing, which the trails led me towards. Once there all hell broke loose as I witnessed of two things happening at the same time: The giant wolves lept forward and Laurent bit Bella's wrist deep.
