Chapter 3

Bella POV

Although my eyes were closed, I knew it was dark outside. I felt something was off, but I couldn't quite point out what it was. I tried to listen closely what I could hear, but all there was were muffled conversations, wind rattling at windows and a few insects chirping. I opened my eyes, only to recognize I was standing beside a bed in a room I didn't recognize, looking down at myself sleeping.

Something was indeed very wrong here. Shouldn't I be a bloodthirsty, out of control vampire by now? I remembered Laurent biting me, feeling the presence of Emmett and Jasper and the pain. Something must have gone wrong, though in the very back of my consciousness I knew there must be an explanation.

I remembered that right before I woke up, I knew something was going to happen. I tried to watch out for details in order to work out what was happening, so I looked around the room and at myself laying on the bed. Everything I saw was sort of blurry, and I instantly thought about how Alice had described her visions to me all those months ago.

Alice... oh, how I missed my best friend, it hurt so much that she left. But I had no time thinking about the past right now, I had to concentrate on the task ahead in order to sort things out. I had enough time to dwell on my past later, when I knew what was going on.

Presuming I was in some sort of vision right now, I concentrated on my surroundings once again. The room was dark and looked old. On top of the wooden floor lay a thick, dark carpet and the furnishing was kept simple. There was a medium sized, wooden dresser right next to a wooden door, a full-length mirror leaning against the wall on the other side of that door. On one wall there was another wooden door, a small desk with a lamp on top sat in one corner. And then there was a small bedside table with a lamp next to the simple, wooden bed, covered in white linens. When I looked at myself, I verified again that I was sleeping. My breaths were deep and I was wrapped snuggly in the thick bedding.

I tried to point out more details, but the sight in front of me got blurrier by the second. By the time I realized my crazy vision was shifting, everything went black.

I woke up with a start, sitting up in bed so fast I got a little dizzy. I flung my eyes open, hoping the previous events where just a dream and I would see Emmett and Jasper. As my vision focused on my surroundings though, my hopes were nipped in the bud. The first thing I recognized was the dim light of the rising sun entering the window above the bed I was sitting in. I tried to comprehend everything was exactly the same as in my strange vision, just from another point of view. There was the dresser and the mirror as well as the desk and the two wooden doors. I sat in the bed, completely dumbstruck. I didn't know what was happening and where I was, if I was still in my crazy vision or if I was just dreaming.

"Ok, Bella. You don't know what is happening, but there must be an explanation. Everything will be alright", I tried to assure myself. I got out of the bed on my mission to find out what was happening. I didn't know why, but I knew I was still myself. I walked over to the full-length mirror, looking at myself. My dark hair fell in waves over my shoulders and I was wearing a plain, cream colored nightgown. My eyes were still the chestnut color I knew, so I knew I was still human.

I made my way to the desk in hopes of getting any cues on where I was. The desk was neatly organized, though not much lay on top. There was a single book in the upper left corner next to the lamp, a newspaper which looked as it has already been read and a small notebook. First I grabbed the newspaper in hopes to get a hint where I was. It was an edition of the Knoxville Journal published on December 8th, 1934. Wait – what? This couldn't be right, it couldn't be 1934! At this point I was quite certain this wasn't real, at least not in the sense of me being here forever. The idea of this being a dream though faded quickly as I grabbed the notebook, opening its first page and looking at my name. Right there in front of me, written in my handwriting were the words 'Isabelle Swan'. So, this wasn't a dream then, it was way to realistic to be one. The thought of this being a vision though felt right, maybe a vision of my past life?

I flipped through the notebook and landed on the last page I wrote on. It was a dairy, obviously MY diary. I started to read the last entry:

'Knoxville, December 6th, 1934. Dear Diary, Papa and Mama want us to move this year, only a few days before Christmas. Although I would love to stay in Knoxville, I understand Papa and Louie found two well paid jobs in Gatlinburg. Mama tried to calm me, told me maybe I would find a nice man there. But I will miss my friends so much, I'm so sad about leaving. There are only a few days left here, so I have to help Mama and Papa packing up our belongings. Until next time, Belle.'

I took a deep breath, feeling very sad at the mention of moving, though I didn't understand why. Was I supposed to live this life now or was I just sort of remembering what happened over 70 years ago? It definitely felt like remembering, though very real and vivid. I started to read through a few more journal entries before standing up and walking over to the closet. I didn't understand why or how, but I just knew what to pick and how to dress in this era. I picked out underwear, stockings and a thick wool dress and started to get dressed when I heard a knock at my door. "Belle, are you awake yet? Mama is waiting for you, please hurry up!". I answered "Good morning to you, too, Louie. I'm just getting dressed, I'll be there in a few minutes". There was a short, throaty laugh and then I heard the sound of retreating footsteps. Ok, so I was clearly remembering or having a vision. There is no other way I would have known this was my brother Louie otherwise.

I got dressed quickly before leaving the room through the door on the right, stepping into a small bathroom. I quickly washed my face, brushed my teeth and hair and used the toilet. I quickly pinned up half my hair checked my appearance one last time in the mirror before leaving the room. Walking through my room, I went down the hallway to where I knew the kitchen was. When I opened the door, a middle-aged woman stood there in a beautiful dress. "Good morning, Mama. Lou told me you were waiting for me?", I asked her. She smiled at me warmly and replied "Good morning, sweety. Yes, I talked to your father earlier and we have noticed we need to go to Gatlinburg to talk to our landlord one more time before moving next week. We just need to bring a few things. Would you mind joining me? The train leaves in 30 minutes". Although I was sad about leaving, I was excited about the opportunity to get a look at the new house we would be renting. "Sure Mama, I would love to! Is there anything I can help you with?" She waved me off, only stating "No, sweety. Just be ready in a few minutes so we can leave, and don't forget you cloak".
