His Smile
Luffy lacked so much common sense. It was something Law noticed immediately the more he was around the younger pirate. Yet, there was something there. He was also smart in his own right. He had watched the war of Marineford. He had watched as Luffy broke through everything to get his brother out of there. Alive.
It had only been in the final seconds that Luffy collapsed, and Law intervened before the arrival of Red-Haired Shanks stopped the Marines from getting to Luffy and Ace. There was such a determination and strong will that Luffy carried that just made people drawn into him. Law had watched many of his antics since his arrival on the Grand Line. Another had been Enies Lobby. Which happened before they met.
Then there was probably the most notorious thing he did.
Punched a Celestial Dragon.
Even everything following, Law knew that wasn't the last time he would ever see Monkey D. Luffy.
Hell, there were many times he wondered if Luffy even noticed what he was doing. What he was causing. Yet, Law was being pulled in.
Throughout the two years following Marineford, Law had put his own plan into action. One that Luffy was not meant to be involved in. He became a Warlord of the Sea. Getting his information that he needed about Doflamingo. He should have known he was going to run into Luffy again. The chaos that seemed to follow that every man's step. He had formed an alliance with him to go after the Yonkos of the Sea.
Then Luffy defeated Doflamingo. Fulfilling the revenge that Law had been building up to for years. It felt so bittersweet, but he had been in awe watching it. He had spilled his heart out to Luffy. He was originally going to end the alliance. He already lost his Warlord position because of it, but he couldn't find it in himself to actually do it. To end it.
There was something about him.
In the end, it even drew him in.
Traveling with the Strawhats had shown him that the Luffy he saw in fights was the same Luffy who fought for his crew. Was the knucklehead Captain. The man who would fight his own cook and beg for more food even after eating most of their supply of food. The one who would joke around with his sniper and Doctor. Sing along to his musician.
It had taken him a long time to realize he had fallen for him.
A part of him had Corazon to thank for it all. If Cora hadn't given his life so, he could have his. Using every last bit of strength that he had left to make sure that he got away undetected. He wouldn't be here now. With his crew. With Luffy.
Before long, even without admitting a thing to Luffy, he enjoyed traveling with him.
It was late one night, their ships in the middle of the sea far away from any island. The two crews were mingling together. The Hearts Pirates getting a bit of fresh air outside of the Polar Tang. Deciding to come to the deck of the Thousand Sunny. Law had decided to lean against the rail towards the back of the ship, looking out to the sea. It was quiet. Yet it wasn't. He could hear the noise of the others, but he was far enough away that it didn't exactly disturb him. His overcoat and hat were off. Sitting on the deck next to his feet. As much as he enjoyed being around everyone, he did prefer the peace and quiet at times. They could be a lot to handle.
"Traffy?" Law didn't even look up from the sea from hearing Luffy speak. He could hear his footsteps getting closer. Rach step making his stomach twist. He hadn't been alone with Luffy almost the entire time they had been in an alliance. Only a few times that he could count on one hand. Especially not after finding out that he might just happen to have a crush on him. "Are you alright?"
Law hummed. "Yeah, just wanted some quiet."
Luffy chuckled, leaning over the rail. Well, if he could call it that. The younger Captain had settled his chin on his arms, humming to himself and practically prancing on his feet. There was so much energy within him. Law was surprised it could even be contained. "The quiet is nice. Reminds me of the forest."
Law eyed him for a second. Luffy never really spoke about his childhood. He only knew snippets from Ace and Sabo. Even then, they also stayed relatively quiet about it. He smiled slightly, leaning his chin onto his palm. What he did hear from them was how chaotic their lives had been. It wasn't often that in their lives they got to have just small moments like this. "Through the chaotic life of a pirate… it's really nice to just have those small moments of solidarity."
"I have no idea what that means but it sounds right." Luffy stated, his grin getting bigger for a moment.
That smile made Law's stomach twist again. He blinked, shaking his head and looking away. It always felt like Luffy managed to say just the right thing whenever he needed to hear it. His smile that would put him into a better mood each and every single time.
"Straw Hat-ya—"
"Traffy—"
The two paused as they looked at each other, neither of them finishing the sentence that they were going to say. Law blinked, the air catching in his throat from noticing just how close Luffy was to him. Luffy, for once, didn't say a word, staring at him with wide eyes. Law let his gaze move from Luffy's face to his lips for just a moment. The thought of what it would feel like if they touched. Law blinked, forcing himself back to reality before he was pulling away and looking back out at the ocean. Ignoring the fact that his face had flared to pink, bringing up a hand to cover it up.
"Traffy!" Luffy exclaimed. Law didn't look back at him, instead looking straight ahead still. "I know you said we were done being allies when we defeat the yonkos… but I don't want you to leave." Law choked again, his eyes going wide as he looked over to Luffy. The younger Captain was smiling, looking out at the sea himself. Fingers gliding over the brim of the straw hat settled on his hair. "You are basically nakama now. I want you to stay traveling with me. We don't have to stop being allies, you know…"
"Straw Hat-ya…" He sighed as he finally managed to brace himself and looked back at Luffy. He couldn't find the words that he wanted to say. What he actually wanted to say to Luffy. "Alright." He chose to say instead.
Luffy started laughing, nudging against Law's shoulder. "You can't say no to me."
"Apparently not." Law huffed, but a smile still came to his face anyway.
Maybe, he would like this better. Continuing to travel with the Strawhats. For a moment, it felt like this is what it was supposed to be like. What Corazon would tell him about when he was younger. His life had changed so much and now he was finding that peace that Cora had wanted for him. He looked up to the sky for a second, his smile getting bigger. He wondered if Cora was proud of him.
"C'mon, Traffy!" Luffy suddenly shouted.
Law was taken by surprise as Luffy grabbed his wrist, already halfway across the deck and dragging him towards where the others were. Brook was placing music on the piano and many of the others were dancing around now. Law just smiled.
Yeah, it felt like the right decision.
Traveling with Luffy until the moment he became the Pirate King. It sounded like a plan to him.
