Brooke and Julian both sat up in their positions on the couch as the front door to Brooke's home opened. In walked Sam with a startled expression on her face as she realized that she had not in fact sneakily entered without getting caught.

"Oh…Hi Brooke, Hi Julian," came Sam's response. "I uh…I was just going to get a shower and go to bed. I'm…uh…preeeetttyy tired." Sam let out a nervous laugh just as Brooke responded with a quick, "that will have to wait. Sam…sit down in here with us please."

Sam walked back into the living room and sat down in a chair opposite Brooke and Julian. Julian placed a reassuring hand upon Brooke's leg as she began. "Sam. You're grounded. You were not given permission to go out tonight. You left this house without speaking to me. I had no idea where you went and I was…we were both…very worried about you."

Sam looked up sheepishly at Brooke and Julian. "I know. I'm sorry. It was just that Jack really wanted to see me and I knew that you would say that I couldn't go because I was grounded. So I uh….I just went. I didn't realize how late it was and I couldn't call you because my phone died. I'm really sorry."

"Sam," Brooke began, "this is the FOURTH time that you have snuck out of this house. We have talked and I thought we had an understanding. I grounded you. Not only did you sneak out tonight, but you also completely disregarded the parameters of your punishment. You broke more than one rule. First of all, you didn't tell me where you were going. Secondly, you left this house without permission. Third…you are home after curfew. Fourth, you didn't call to check in or answer my calls. It's your responsibility in this situation to make sure your phone is charged, so that is not an excuse. All of those things are reason enough to punish you, except for the fact that in order to do any of those things, you had to first completely ignore your current punishment."

Sam looked down at her lap as Brooke spoke. Julian sat close to Brooke keeping a hand on her for support and reassurance. Brooke took a deep breath and continued, "Sam, honey, I need you to understand something, so I'm going to need you to look up at me. Before I say anything else, I need to remind you that I love you, no matter what. Nothing that you do or don't do can ever change that. My disappointment in your choices tonight is because I CARE. It is because I am concerned, Sam. It is because I see the path you're going down. I see dangers and hang ups on that path that you cannot yet see. It is because I want to PROTECT you from those things. It is because all I want for you are great things." With that Brooke's voice cracked and tears sprung to her eyes. That was all Sam needed to become a puddle of tears herself. "Sam…I want the BEST future for you. I want everything for you."

Tears rolled down Sam's face as she heard words that she had never before in her life heard. Her tears were not tears of sadness. They were tears of regret mixed with tears of overwhelm at the amount of love being shown to her. She half expected Brooke to tell her that it was not going to work out and that she would need to be moved to another home. Hearing love in her foster mother's voice and seeing it in her face was so foreign to Sam that it completely overtook her. The truth is that Sam was so reckless tonight because she just figured that it didn't matter and that if it was too frustrating for Brooke, she would just move along and become someone else's problem.

"Brooke, I'm so sorry. I uh…I really am," Sam choked out through her tears. By this time Brooke and Sam were crying and tears had jumped into Julian's eyes as well."

"I appreciate that Sam," Brooke responded. "Talk to us, please. I need to know that you understand that I am not angry with you. I need to know that you know WHY your choices tonight were not good ones."

Sam took a few deep breaths to compose herself in order to speak. "I uh…I know that you want to know where I am so you can make sure that I am somewhere safe?" Sam responded as though asking a question. "Yes…absolutely," said Brooke. "And…um…I know that if my phone is off and I can't tell you where I am, you can't help me if I need help?" "Ok…" Brooke replied. Brooke waited for more from Sam. "And I…um…I know that being out with a boy late at night is not a good idea." "Mmm hmmm," came the response from Brooke. "And that I have a curfew to help make sure I am home safely at a good time and so I can be ready for school the next day…so I can do good."

Brooke nodded at Sam and gave a small smile in her direction. "Yes, honey. I want you to also trust that what I ask of you is for your good…not to make you miserable or to ruin your fun. It's my job to teach you. When you are grounded it's because I need for you to take a step back to reset and refocus. I need you to pause for a moment because there are some things you need to learn there. BUT…when you refuse to learn, I have to step in even more because I love you too much to let you take a path of destruction." With this, Brooke took a giant breath and slipped her hand in Julian's. All this time, Julian had been silently nodding and agreeing. A simple, "Sam, you are incredible, kiddo. Too incredible to do the things that you have been doing," came from him.

Brooke took one more very large breath and squeezed Julian's hand tightly. He squeezed back. "Sam," Brooke began, "because I love you SO MUCH and because I need to take more steps to make sure you understand me here…I am going to give you a spanking." Brooke stopped for a moment to let her words reach Sam. As they all sat in silence, Julian squeezed back harder onto Brooke's hand. "I don't expect you to like this or even agree with it, but it is where we find ourselves tonight. It's necessary….and I truly hope this is the only time we will find it necessary."

Sam stared back at Brooke and Julian in disbelief. She felt like she was dreaming. Her stomach dropped and her knees felt weak. Up until last week, she had never even been disciplined in any kind of way. Her grounding from Brooke was the first punishment she had received in her entire 15 years of life! How could this be happening. She thought spanking was what happened to little kids, not someone who was in high school! Sam's heart raced as all of these thoughts flooded through her mind. Never had she ever thought that Brooke would spank her. This all seemed so unreal.

Julian broke the silence by saying, "Sam, Brooke loves you SO MUCH. She only wants the very best for you. I know it doesn't seem like it right now, but she is doing this FOR you not TO you."

Sam stammered, "I…I…I don't think you have to do that. I mean…I understand everything that you are saying and I can do better…I promise." Sam's heart continued to race. "I mean…you can't do that. It's not allowed. I'm 15."

"I know you are, Sam," Brooke replied. "Sure, this is a punishment that is typically reserved for younger children. BUT…you did not receive correction or discipline when you were that age, Sam. You are still a child and as long as you are, this type of punishment is an option. It's an incredibly rare option, but it's still one nonetheless. I've spoken to your caseworker and she assured me that as long as it is appropriate and measured, it is allowed."

Brooke continued, "Listen. I don't expect you to agree with me right now or to like this at all. But I do expect you to do as I tell you. Now…please go into your room. I'll join you in there in a few minutes."

To both Brooke and Julian's surprise…and probably Sam's as well, Sam got up and walked to her room, closing the door behind her.

Julian took Brooke's face in his own and kissed her forehead. "You are an amazing mom, Brooke Davis! Sam doesn't know it right now, but the day she was placed in your home was the best day of her life. I love you, Brooke Davis."

Brooke melted into Julian's arms. "I love you too, Julian Baker."

With that, Julian kissed Brooke one more time and made his way out. As he got to his car, Julian decided to remain in his car outside of Brooke's home just in case she needed him once everything was over.
