Prologue

26th December 1967,

Streiber Estate, Oxford, United Kingdom

The Streiber Estate wasn't exactly what Arsenius expected. It looked rather welcoming for a home of Vampires. Sure, the manor's design was very gothic and the colours consisted of dark shades but the golden glow of the lights inside and the tidiness of it that he could make out through the windows on the ground floor were comforting and warm compared to the cold night outside. The Streiber's were a family friend of his adopted parents, and they had invited the three of them over for a Christmas meal. The little boy wasn't too thrilled on going since he would be dining with people he didn't know and not only that they were vampires. From the stories he read, they were bloodthirsty creatures who killed people but they seemed apparently 'pretty normal' and 'not all were bad' according to his parents. He also heard that the grand-daughter had magic, the only one in the family, a muggle born I suppose would be her title. Learning about this hybrid existence intrigued the boy and so he was anxious to find out about her and hopefully befriend her. The boy followed his parents up to the front door in his black tailor made suit and his black hair swept back, all styled and neat. He loitered behind the adults, feeling a bit shy as his father knocked on the door.

The door finally opened to reveal a smartly dressed man in a tuxedo with tails, he too had neat hair and stood proudly as he welcomed the Desford's into the lavish home of the Strieber's. The inside was completely different from the outside, it was homely and inviting just as he had expected when he was outside. It wasn't dark, dank and creepy like it was mentioned in the stories. The main entrance was lit with a large chandelier, just like at his home and a large spiral staircase was situated to the left at the back of the room. The floor was made of marble and reflected the light beautifully. There were three doors, each one he presumed led to different sections of the house. The butler led them to the door on the right and it opened to reveal a sitting room with a group of other people. Arsenius glanced at each of them until they landed on a girl. The only other child in the room. He watched her as she made a poor attempt at greeting his parents, she seemed rather standoffish and rather bored. Her eyes then landed on him and he finally got a better look at her, she was rather pale in complexion but she had these dark, stormy grey eyes. They were gorgeous yet terrifying and the young boy felt himself shudder at their beauty. The girl was beautiful. Ethereal. With her blonde hair and those wonderful eyes.

"Arsenius, meet our daughter, Circe. The two of you might be going to school together next year," Circe's mother approached the young boy, gently nudging her daughter along. He smiled awkwardly at her.

"Hello, I'm Arsenius. It's lovely to meet you," he said, holding out his hand for her to shake. The little girl looked down at his hand then back up at him before slowly taking it. He was surprised to find that her hand was fairly warm. The handshake was somewhat stiff and uncomfortable for the young boy. With that, the adults went off to chatter amongst themselves leaving the two kids to talk amongst themselves, at least that was what Arsenius hoped but Circe had moved off to the otherside of the room. He tensed up as she moved away and looked around, unsure what to do. The men were standing near the hearth, having some drinks, laughing and joking at some stories and the women were sitting on the satin crimson sofa gossiping about something. The boy's green eyes slowly drifted back up to the blonde in the corner of the room who was now reading a book. He took a moment to debate on going over, he wasn't sure what he would say until he saw what he was reading.

Frankenstein.

Seeing that made his eyes light up, he now had a decent way of starting a conversation and he slowly began to make his way over to Circe. Once he was there, he just stood in front of her, losing his nerve again. Grey eyes stopped drifting over the words when she felt his presence and they stiffly moved up to glare at him, waiting for him to speak.

"Hello again. I see you're reading Frankenstein, it's one of my favourites," the boy attempted to make small talk but his only response was the girl's sharp, unblinking gaze. He tensed and cast his eyes elsewhere. Circe went back to her book, making Arsenius irritated with himself and so he tried again. "May I sit?" he questioned, hinting at the empty spot beside her. She didn't say anything but she saw that she had stopped reading again, glaring at a certain spot of the book but for some reason, Arsenius took that as a yes and he sat himself down beside the mesmerising girl. "I've probably read it about 6 times," he continued. Circe quietly slammed her book down before turning her head and frowned at the annoying boy. He moved back in surprise at the sudden motion and blinked at her. Her frown was not one of anger however but one of confusion.

"Why are you still talking to me?" she spoke softly. Hearing her voice for the first time made his heart swell. She was talking to him! His sudden spurt of happiness suddenly dissipated when he realised what she asked.

"Well, I was hoping we might become friends," she scanned his face, unsure if what he was saying was true.

"You don't want to be friends with me," she stated before turning back to the book but the black haired boy stopped her. The action made her head snap toward him, a dark look in her eyes and low growl sounded from her throat as she sneered at him. It was then she noticed a red glow in her eyes. He frowned slightly but tried to help her understand that he really did want to be her friend.

"Why? Because you're a vampire?" her harsh glare softened slightly before it hardened again.

"I'm a monster,"

"I don't see one,"

"That's because you haven't seen the real me," she hissed lowly, not wanting the adults to hear. She went back to her book with a furious look on her delicate features. Arsenius gulped. She had a point but he believed she should still have a friend.

"I don't care. We are both potentially starting Hogwarts soon, wouldn't it be good if we at least knew each other before then? We can look out for each other," the blonde shifted her head slightly to look at him out of the corner of her eye.

"You're very persistent," she stated, making the boy chuckle feebly.

"Just give me a chance and I'll prove I'll be good to you, monster or not… but you're definitely not a monster in my opinion," Circe seemed taken aback by this proclamation but she thought for a moment, looking the boy up and down analytically. He sounded genuine to her and she opted to take her chances.

"Okay, we can be friends and just so you know, I've read that book about 8 times," the girl challenged timidly, making the boy's lips stretch out in a smile.
