36 John and Reggie Move
John unloaded and moved the last of the boxes for this trip into the foyer. He still had his apartment and he would have to do something about that. One way or another he was tied to reapers that was for sure. He would have to live with one, or more, for the rest of his life. He didn't like the pattern he saw taking shape. What could he do? He could feel his options getting taken away. True new opportunities were opening up but the pattern…he could see some higher power at work…from the beginning and he wondered about that. Why him? And where was this taking him, them? That he was getting tied to Reggie was clear. He was happy about that. That her sister was his ex made for a bit of the awkward, but it could be worse. Moving in to live with his ex, again, was awkward for sure. He could tell George wasn't excited by the whole thing but well understood what would be would be.
He walked out and locked up Rube's truck. He looked up. On the porch George and Reggie were talking watching him. Christ. He would have to get used to this.
"John, George made some sandwiches." Reggie opened the front door.
"Sounds great." He followed them inside.
Instead of the kitchen the two sisters walked upstairs. He brought up the rear. They had left the question of exactly which bedroom they would take open. That seemed to be about to close. He watched the two; one a petite very young looking girl and the other early twenties taller obviously older. The odd thought crossed his mind that he and Reggie - in twenty years - could have a child looking older than George. She would never age.
George walked into the master bedroom. "You two should move in here."
Reggie followed her in. "What about Mom? She should be coming home soon."
George did not look at Reggie. John watched her attention rest on the tightly made bed and then move to the family pictures on the dresser. She said firmly, "Mom will be happy in your old room."
They glanced over to him. He raised his hands. He was learning the limits of free will in an ever tighter relationship as complex as this one. He wasn't about to try and factor their mother, his mother-in-law, into this situation. "I'm flexible." And he was not looking forward to Round 2 of Joy and Georgia Lass in the same room together. He would make sure his gun wasn't part of it next time around.
"It's settled. You two will sleep in here. Mom has an option on your old room. That will leave the small bedroom upstairs. And we can fix up the den as an extra downstairs bedroom. Plenty of room."
Reggie furrowed up her brow. "Who else is moving in?"
George looked blank for a long pause almost like she was getting a reap order coming down and said, "We'll know that when we need to know. Let's go eat. My undead metabolism is humming."
George led the way back down towards the kitchen and food. Reggie hugged him and they followed.
