High School: Freshman Year

Marceline felt her shoulder being poked. She grumbled into her pillow, putting it over her head and attempting to fall back asleep. She was poked again.

"No," she grumbled. "Let me sleep."

Then she heard her brother's voice. "Marceline, you have to get up."

Marceline glanced up from under her pillow. "What day is it?"

"Your first day of high school. Well, technically, it's my first day of high school, too, but you know, I'm a junior, so technically I've been in high school for two years already. It's the first day of school overall, and your first day of high school-"

"So, it's September."

"Yeah."

Marceline pulled her blanket over her head. "Wake me up in June," she said in a slightly muffled voice.

"Marcy, you gotta get up. You gotta go to school. Just four more years."

Marceline pulled her blanket down and sat up. "Only two more for you."

"Yeah, but I'm gonna be there for you the first two years. Come on."

Marceline looked thoughtful for a moment, then flopped back and lay on her back, rolling over to her side closer to the wall and away from her brother. "Nope. Not going."

"Marceline, come on. If you don't get up, your bacon is going to get cold."

Marceline sighed. "Isn't the whole point of going to school so you can get a job and get money so you can live? We don't need that. We have money." Marshall got up from the bed and didn't say anything for a second. "Ok. You know what? You couldn't handle it anyway."

Marceline sat up in bed. "Really?"

"Yeah." Marshall began slowly walking towards the door, looking over his shoulder at his sister. "It's a good thing you're not coming. You wouldn't last a day in my high school, let alone 4 years. You're just not tough enough."

He turned back and looked at her with a smirk.

Marceline got a furious look on her face, jumped out of bed, and stomped towards her brother. "I can so!" she snapped.

"No, no you can't. That's why you don't wanna go. You're a big ol' scaredy cat." He smiled slyly and poked her in the shoulder.

"Take that back!" Marceline snapped.

"Make me."

"Oh, I can handle high school."

"No, you can't."

"Yes, I can."

"Prove it then."

"Fine, I will."

"I bet you won't get past the first day."

"I so will!"

"20 bucks says you won't."

"Fine, I could use the money."

"So could I."

"Should we make it official?"

Marceline gave her brother a determined smile, then spit on her hand. Marshall did the same, and they shook hands.

"I call first dibs on bacon!" said Marceline, shoving her brother and running out of her room, hightailing it down the stairs.
