Chapter two: Three reasons why it's not possible

Lucifer didn't eat anymore, he just stared at her, mouth half opened. Chloe turned to Javier. "We asked you before and you now had a day to think it over: can you think of anyone who would murder your father?"

Junior shook his head. "I told you: no."

"If his food was poisoned, it had to be someone that was in the kitchen this morning. Someone in the restaurant. Someone of the staff."

"Anne brought us our meals, that is the only thing I saw," Junior answered. "I assume she also made them. But dad and me had the same meal, so how can only he be poisoned?"

Chloe thought it over. Lucifer was still staring at her. Her eyes went to Lucifer's plate and the part of the food he had not yet touched. "Did you eat everything from your breakfast?" she asked Javier.

"Not the meat. I'm vegetarian, but I didn't tell Anne yet. My dad took my meat and ate from it."

"Took it?" Chloe asked.

"I shoved it on his plate."

"Ate from it?" Chloe dugged on.

"Not all, it was a lot."

Chloe frowned and stared at Lucifer. "Detective," he whispered. "What do you mean you decided to trust me?"

"Later, Lucifer," Chloe said. "I'm thinking about the case. What if the murderer wanted to poison Javier Junior?" She pointed at Junior. "He or she didn't know he is vegetarian and didn't expect Chef Javier to eat the meat. That would imply the poison was in the meat."

Lucifer showed no sign he was listening, he just stared eyes wide open at her.

"Anne Martin ate the remainder of the meat and was poisoned by accident," Chloe continued. "Or… Wait. She thought she could eat this meat safely, since it was on Chef Javier's plate." Chloe grabbed her phone and called the hospital Anne was in.

A few minutes later she lowered her phone. "Lucifer?"

"What?"

"Who do you think left against orders, without properly checking out?"

"You… know? How…"

Chloe raised. "Sorry, mom. Case. Lucifer!"

He blinked his eyes. "Yes? What? You mean Anne Martin?"

"Indeed. Come. I think I know where our sous-chef went in such a hurry."

Even before Chloe had fastened her seatbelt, Lucifer started: "You now know I'm not delusional? What do you mean, detective?"

She was in the driver seat, he in the passenger seat. She checked the traffic and left the parking space. "I know you have been telling the truth all the time: you are the devil, Maze is a demon."

He shove to the right side of his chair as far as possible, looking eyes wide open at her. "How… And you still want to work with me?"

She grabbed his hand and tried to pull him back. "I said I have chosen to trust you."

"You do?" he whispered. "What did you find out?"

She grinned at him. "I never believed you, but if I now explain, you won't believe me."

"I will try," he said softly.

"You know Trixie went to the Lux?"

"Your mother told me her point of view," he said, still looking at her as if she could panic any moment.

"I'm sure she did," Chloe said. She would like to hear what her mother point of view of the little fight was, but decided that could wait. "I found Trix talking with Maze and then…" She hesitated for a second. "Our daughter appeared."

"Sorry. What do you mean with our daughter?"

"A girl, bit older than Trixie. I guess ten years of age. Black hair, red wings."

"Our daughter ten years old? Detective, ten years ago…"

"She was practicing her time travel," Chloe interrupted him. "She came from 2032."

He went silent for at least a minute.

"She knew Maze, called her aunt Maze. She called me mom and said her name was Aurora Jane Morningstar."

Lucifer inhaled deep. Then he shook his head. "Angels and humans can't procreate."

"Different species," Chloe agreed. "I discussed that with Maze. She said I'm immune for your mojo, immune for your charms and I could shoot you. Her idea was we don't know what is more weird interaction the two of us have."

Lucifer scratched his head and gave it a thought before he shrugged. "Speculations, but I agree we don't know. It…" Again he shook his head.

"She said in her present Trixie and Maze were to a festival together with Na'amah, who Maze said must be her sister and a demon, and Raziel, who could be your sister and an angel. Rory called all of them her aunts."

"My sister with two demons?" His voice was filled with disbelief.

"And there was also an aunt Ella and an aunt Eve, but neither Maze nor I have an idea who these aunts might be."

"Are you sure you and Maze understood her well?"

"Yes," Chloe said, a bit offended. "Rory also told us I asked you to carry me to hell to interrogate a soul, to solve a case."

"I cut off my wings, detective."

"And burned them. Maze told me."

"So that is not possible."

"And Dan and I are trying to get back together. I can't have a daughter with you. But I had her in my arms, I know she was my daughter."

"You and Dan are back together? Is that why you don't want to have sex with me?"

"Look, Lucifer. Dan and I are trying. We have to do for Trixie. And I don't do one-night stands. Never. I want a stable relation, exclusive. You only search for meaningless sex with as much partners as possible each night." She sighed. Angels and humans couldn't procreate, he cut off his wings, she had to go with Dan. "So three reasons why it can't be true. But I know Rory was my daughter."

Lucifer didn't answer and looked away during the rest of the drive.

They found Anne Martin in Sol de Javier, picking up the heroin she had used to mix with the poison that killed Chef Javier. Anne set the place on fire. Lucifer took Chloe in his arms and carried her through the fire to safety and Anne was arrested.

"My car is still at your place," Lucifer said when they finally left the burned down restaurant.

"I didn't see the Corvette," Chloe said.

He shook his head. "I came with one of my others."

During the ride Lucifer just stared at the road ahead, without speaking.

"Maze gave me a usb-stick with all what happened," Chloe said. "We can take a look together."

"That would be good," he said softly, without looking at her and he went silent again.

Dan was gone when they arrived at Chloe's place. Trixie was in bed. Penelope was still awake, surprised to see Lucifer and telling her daughter she had an early flight and wanted to say goodbye. As soon as Penelope had gone to her room, Chloe turned up her laptop and put the memory stick in. They watched the scenes with Rory twice, Lucifer still hardly speaking a word.

"And?" Chloe asked. "Do you now believe me?"

"I always believed you, detective."

"But you are overthinking something."

"You trust me, the devil?"

"Our daughter made clear I will trust you in 2032. Than it would be insane not to do so in 2017."

He nodded, didn't answer and stared at the computer screen.

"What is troubling you? That you will have a child? That you will fly me to hell?"

"I don't understand either, but, no that's not…. You said you want a stable relation."

"Yes." She hesitated before saying: "I'm sorry, but I won't share the man I love with some strangers he picks up at a party each night, so we can't be together."

He finally looked at her. "I don't want to sound pathetic. I don't want to cha… O, bloody hell, I do want to change your mind. I would love to be your boyfriend in an exclusive relation. O, not when we first met… But when you came after father Frank was killed…" He closed his eyes and sighed deep. "You're the only one I want. I denied it after the cheater-therapist case, but I'm jealous when I see you talking with Dan. But we will have a daughter. We. You can't imagine how happy that makes me."

Chloe stared at him, mouth half open, hardly breathing. Why did he say this? She wanted to get back to Dan, he was Trixie's father. If Lucifer told the truth… It hit her. Of course she had to go on with Dan, but if she had the choice… She clenched her fists. There was no choice. Not because he was the devil, the actual, biblical devil, but for Trixie. And even if Lucifer did think he wanted her, it would be for a few days, best for weeks before he would get bored. He had the attention span of a toddler.

Her phone beeped. She glanced briefly at the screen. Dan. She opened the message. "I think it better for both of us to go separate ways". Just that.

"Bloody bastard. We weren't even back together," she whispered.

Lucifer turned to her. "Back together? Dan?"

Chloe felt tears welling up in her eyes. "He ends it with me. With a text."

He took her in his arms, pulled her in, let her face rest against his shoulder.

"I just feel like an idiot," Chloe said softly. "I can't believe that I would let myself care for him again. I mean, why? So I get hurt?"

"No, because you're a kind person," Lucifer whispered in her ear. "Who puts the needs of others before your own. It's a horrible irony that my father invented."

She expected him to take advantage, to point out a one-night stand was available now. But he just hold her. "It is his loss," Lucifer said. "He had the most fascinating woman in my dad's creation and he let her go."

"No-one wants me. All my relations end badly."

He rocked her softly. "Don't think negative about yourself. I've never met someone as perfect as you."

She put her arms around his waist. "Does that work well as pick up line?"

"I have no idea. I never said it to any other person. It's no pick up line."

Well, he must realize that Dan cleared the way for any relation between them. If he realized, he didn't say it and she didn't want to say it. She wanted to change subject. He felt warm, warmer than a human would feel. "Rory mentioned an aunt Raziel, who might be your sister. Does she live in LA?"

"Raziel?' He answered still holding her, with his cheek on her hair. "I can't imagine. She is a much younger sibling and I hardly ever spoke with her. As far as I know she has been to Earth only a few times."

"So angels do visit Earth?"

"Only when my father sends them with a mission."

"That Amenadiel. He is really your brother? Wait. He is really an angel?"

"Yes and yes."

"But he didn't have wings."

"An angel can hide his or her wings. They can be folded in another dimension and brought out when needed. You wouldn't overlook Amenadiel's wings, dark, grey, larger then himself."

She frowned. "How do you put something in another dimension?"

"An angel just moves his shoulders, like this" – he rolled his shoulders – "would put ones wings away and this" – he motioned them again – "would make th… What?! The?! Hell?!"

Two large, white wings appeared on his back. They pushed Chloe's printer from the desk, knocked over a vase with flowers, hit a painting from the wall and throw two chairs through the room.

Lucifer still had his arms around Chloe, who looked first left then right at the bright glowing wings. She raised a hand to touch them, but then hesitated. "May I…"

"Bloody hell!" He grumbled. "If you want. Nothing of interest. Only feathered exasperations."

"Lucifer, they are beautiful. Hundred times more beautiful than the ones at the action."

"They are my father's doing, detective. I don't want them."

"You cut them off…" She couldn't understand how he could do such. "You burned them and yet they are here."

"No need to remind me of that, detective."

"After cutting them off, you never tried to unfold them from those other dimensions before?"

"Of course not. What would have been the use?"

Chloe thought that over. "So maybe they would have appeared always when you tried?"

He moved his shoulders and the wings disappeared. "I don't know. Your guess is as good as mine."

She pulled him in a new hug. "Which mean you can carry me to hell."

"Detective! I really have no plan to drag you down to hell!"

"I mean to interrogate a bad guy and help solve a case," she murmured. "How would that go?"

Immediately when Chloe woke up, the memories struck her. Lucifer was truly the devil. She would have a daughter with Lucifer. Dan had dumped her. She came out of bed and felt dizzy. No panic. She closed her eyes and waited for a few seconds. No panic. His glowing white wings, his arms around her. The confession that he had been jealous when he saw her talking with Dan. Within a minute after she entered the kitchen, Trixie stormed out of her room.

"Did Lucifer stay to sleep over?"

"No, monkey. He went home around two o'clock."

"Did you tell Lucifer about Rory, mommy?"

"I did."

"What did he say?"

Chloe needed to think a few seconds. "He said he is so happy he and I will have a daughter together."

"Because he loves you."

"Monkey, why do you think he loves me?"

"It's the way he looks at you. How he smiles when you look at him."

Chloe put some toast and eggs on Trixie's plate. "Lucifer and I… we need to talk some more. I'm just a human and he…"

"He is the devil. Does he have horns and a tail and wings? He must have wings for he will fly with you to hell. Did he show you his wings?"

"A lot of questions, monkey. As I said Lucifer and I need to talk. I promise you…" She was interrupted by a message arriving on her phone. "Lucifer. He asks whether I'm still want to see him, work with him."

There was a case: a man was killed at the Dunlear Foundation. Chloe went to pick up Lucifer at the Lux. Despite she already texted him she wanted to see him and wanted to work with him, his look was shy and uncertain when she arrived in front of the building.

"You're sure, detective?" he asked after opening the passengers door.

She gestured at the chair, he came in. She reached for his head, pulled him closer and kissed his cheek. "I didn't run, I didn't freak out."

"Thank you, detective." He thought for a moment. "I just had a conversation with Maze."

"No longer angry at her?"

"I should be, I should stay angry. But I saw my daughter jumping in her arms and calling her aunt. So we went over our problems and decided we will team up again."

The man who was killed was Tim Dunlear, head of the foundation, former NBA star and playboy, now all philanthropy. They met his widow and her assistant and Lucifer offered her the Lux for the next event of the foundation. Later Chloe got a visit from mrs Vanessa Dunlear's lawyer, Will Fleming, telling her to stay away from mrs Dunlear.

"Question is, whether he's protecting himself or Vanessa?" she said to Lucifer after the lawyer had left.

"Or maybe they're just good people," Lucifer answered.

She put her hand on his arm and looked him in the eyes without speaking. He sighed. "O, bollocks. Ok. When Vanessa shows up for the event this evening, I will see to speak her without that lawyer and I will ask her."

"Mojo her."

"As you wish, detective."

"Good," she said. "While you prepare the Lux, I will have a word with that assistant again."

Chloe spoke with the assistant and learned something was wrong with the school that the Foundation was building in Haiti. With that information she convinced Will Fleming to take a good look in the financials of the Foundation. After searching through the books for almost an hour, Will suddenly turned to her. "Someone is taking money from the Foundation. A lot of money."

"Who?" Chloe asked.

Will turned to the computer again, switched between a few windows a few times and finally grumbled: "Vanessa."

At the moment Chloe and Will Fleming entered the Lux, with printed evidence of Vanessa's fraud, Chloe phone rang.

"Lucifer?"

"Detective. I just had a visit from Vanessa. When I asked her whether she killed her husband, she shoot me."

"What?" Chloe almost yelled. "Are you hurt?"

"Not at all, detective. Invulnerable again. Strange, but anyway. I think Vanessa is in the club now."

"I'm almost there, Lucifer."

"Good. I'm coming down also."

They entered almost at the same time the main hall of Lux, confronted Vanessa and arrested her.

"Someone else tried to enter the penthouse," Lucifer said after Vanessa was taken away by some uniformed officers and while Will Fleming was talking to the audience, hoping to save the charity event.

"Who?" Chloe asked.

"Didn't see him. Maze told him to leave – she used other words – when he tried to enter the elevator. She didn't like his smell, she said. This is a picture from the security cam."

Chloe looked at his phone. "That's Malcolm Graham. From Palmetto Street."

"Why does he want to see me?"

Chloe shrugged.

Lucifer stared at the picture on his phone and mused: "What can we do to solve the Palmetto mystery?"

We already looked at everything, was the first Chloe wanted to say, but she hesitated. Rory had talked about interrogating a bad man in hell. Lucifer had his wings back. She took his arm and pulled him away from the audience listening to Will Fleming. "Malcolm Graham knows who shoot him, but there might be one more person: Nikolas Aoudi. If at Pametto there was a guy I couldn't see, Aoudi might have seen him."

"But Aoudi is dead, detective."

"You have your wings again."

"You want me to fly down and talk with Aoudi?"

"I ask you to take me with you so we can interrogate him together." Chloe swallowed. "Well. If you want. If it is possible. How would traveling to hell work?"
