I was waiting for Jessica to buy her lunch when a Cherry Coke and Milky Way bar dropped onto the table in front of me.

I jerked around. I was surprised to see Edward Cullen standing right behind me, smiling awkwardly.

"Um… No thanks," I said.

I picked up the food to hand back to him. He didn't take them.

I set the food to the side. "I'm not gonna eat it, so you might as well throw it away."

"It's an…" he said. "An apology gift."

"I don't do apology gifts," I said. "I also don't take food from boys."

Edward looked surprised. "You take food from Mike all the time."

"Mike is a friend. You are some random guy I don't know."

"We're classmates," Edward said.

"Yeah? That's cool, I didn't know that," I said. "I don't want anything you give me. Please don't talk to me again."

"It would be much easier if I could just read your mind," Edward said. Then he turned and walked away.

When Jessica came back, she was annoyed by the coke on the table. "I bought you a drink."

"That is from Edward Cullen," I said. "An apology gift. I wouldn't touch it if someone paid me to."

Jessica pushed the food to the side and handed me my nachos, candy bar + Cherry Pepsi.

"He brought you the same thing I did?" Jessica asked. She dug into her hot dog.

"I have never talked to him before. How would he even know what my favourite drink is? I haven't even seen him in the cafeteria since he almost threw up in class."

"They hang out in their cars. Or they leave campus."

I dug into my nachos. Eric came and sat down with us a little later. I told him he could have the candy bar and soda if he didn't mind it coming from Edward Scissorhands.

"I can't," Eric said. "I have a dentist appointment today."

I shrugged. "I wouldn't even eat it."

"This is weird," Eric said. "So just throw it away?"

He stood up, grabbed the soda and candy and tossed them into the nearest rubbish bin.

"Edward is looking over here," Jessica said.

"Don't start," I said. "I am not interested in becoming gossip. He creeps me out."

Jessica agreed. She stopped it.

Instead, Eric asked if I had already finished my paper for science and groaned when I said absolutely not. "Science is last on my list. I know it will take all Saturday. But we can meet up if you want."

Eric started laughing. "My mom thinks every girl gonna end up pregnant if I talk to them."

"I am good," I said. "I can't have kids."

"Really?" Eric asked.

"I am allergic to men," I said.

Dropping any pretence of socialization, I dug into my food.

At least Jessica was a solid friend.

She didn't even ask me to pay her back right away for the food. I had some money in my backpack but didn't want to dig it out just yet
