The Wolf Among Us: The Serif's Deputy
Chapter one: A troubled feeling.
It had been several months sense Bigby had closed The Crooked Man case and got justice for Faith and Lilly. Many others would have turned the other cheek. Who cares about two dead hookers anyhow? Bigby Wolf, that's who. For he knew that they were people too. Bigby was often seen as the heartless and blood thirsty terror of legend… The Big, Bad, Wolf. And long ago that was all true. But not anymore…
Bigby often didn't know how to express his emotions, never having many friends to do so witch meant he never learned how. But despite that the biggest thing about him was not how bad he was, but the size of his heart. Not everyone, but most people saw that now.
Sadly the one person that meant the most to him didn't see him like that… Snow white… Bigby didn't want to, but there were people that he was forced to kill along the way, Dee, Mary, and The Crooked Man himself. He was forced to kill Dee in order to protect snow. She never saw it like that but oddly enough she ended up being the one protecting him from Bloody Mary. Bigby hated Mary at first for nearly killing him and for putting Snow's life in danger but when it came time to actually fight her he found that he pitied her. Perhaps she was just another victim of the crooked man? Bigby didn't know her life and what she had been through so he knew he could not understand what would possess her to be the way that she was.
Then there was The Crooked man himself. Bigby couldn't bring him back to face trial. That was what he wanted. Bigby didn't know what, but he knew The Crooked man wanted to be brought back for a reason. Whatever it was it was very clear that he was very confident that if Bigby took him in for trial that whatever he was planning would work. Bigby couldn't allow that to happen. He had people to protect, even if those people hated him for it.
After he brought them the body of The Crooked man back some of the fables wanted to push him down the witching well, possibly even Snow. Luckily Bigby had managed to convince most of the fables that he had truly changed and the vast majority stood up for him and supported his decision to kill The crooked man. Sadly, just not Snow…
Bigby had been in love with Snow White for nearly three centuries now, he just never k new how to tell her. So it tore him apart knowing that she hadn't supported him… Some people had called him her dog. A remark Bigby had once taken as an insult but now knew that it was true. He realized now that being called her dog wasn't so much of an insult to him as it was a reflection of her. Bigby had done everything in his power to protect and support Snow, but sadly it meant nothing to her…
She wouldn't have even gotten her position as deputy mayor if it wasn't for his support, and now she just lords it over his head. Whenever she speaks to him it is clear that she isn't speaking to a friend, but a lackey. Never calling him by his name but instead just "Mr. Wolf", or "Sheriff". What a load of shit! Even if she hadn't loved him Bigby could understand, but to lose the one friend that he cared about more than anything… Well it was a massive blow.
Sadly that didn't matter anymore. Bigby had a job to do, and that was to protect the friends that he still had, even if he wasn't as close to any of them as he once was with Snow. Sadly Bigby realized that he couldn't do this on his own, he needed a partner. No, there hadn't been any murders sense Faith and Lilly but Bigby was the only cop that the fables had and he just couldn't handle things on his own. That's how things had gotten like this in the first place. Not enough people to protect everyone in Fable Town.
There was a time where Snow would have been the perfect choice as his partner. They had worked well together and had been very comfortable in each other's company, at least when it came to solving the case that is. But now… Well, he was just her dog. A painful truth that he now understood.
His second choice would have been Colon. Sadly Colon was just a pig. No opposable thumbs. And that was another thing. Snow resented the fact that Bigby refused to send Colon and Mr. Toad to the farm. Perhaps he could understand her view on the situation. Mr. Toad had refused to get a glamor and Colon was a pig. And logically speaking pigs belonged on farms. But Bigby had already lost Snow's friendship, he wasn't about to let her take another friend from him.
Another choice would have been The Woods Man. Bigby and Woody had hated each other for centuries but had managed to work out their differences. Sadly Woody had skipped town and Bigby had no clue where he had gone.
One final option would have been Nerissa, The Little Mermaid. The one friend of Faith and Lilly that had started the whole thing. He never would have known about their murders if it weren't for her. Sadly she had also skipped town. Bigby had thought about asking her to stay but he knew that he couldn't do that to her. This place had too many painful memories for her.
Bigby let out a troubled sigh as he rubbed his forehead in frustration before lighting up a Huff&Puff. He was currently sitting in his quiet and empty office as he had been going over all of the thoughts in his head. Bigby let out a breath of smoke before sighing again. "I need to get some fresh air." Bigby said to himself before crushing out his cigarette in the ash tray on his desk. Some times Bigby wondered why he even bothered smoking. It wasn't like he ever seemed to finish a cigarette before crushing it out.
Bigby got up and walked out of his office. As he shut the door behind him and began making his way down the hall he nearly ran directly into Snow White, who was on her way to the business office. "Oh, Snow… I'm sorry… I didn't see you there." Bigby said apologetically. "It's alright sheriff, don't worry about it." Snow said in a cold and dismissive tone. There was than an awkward silence as they both stared at each other for a minute.
"Hey, um… Snow… do you think…?" Bigby began sheepishly as he rubbed the back of his neck but Snow cut him off. "What is it Mr. Wolf? I am very busy and don't have time to talk right now." Snow said in a cold and dismissive voice. "Um, it's nothing… Sorry to bother you." Bigby said was he looked away while rubbing the back of his neck. Snow didn't say another word before walking past him in a cold manner. "Really living up to your name there Snow... As cold as ever." Bigby said to himself as he watched her walk away.
Once outside the woodland gates Bigby lit up another Huff&Puff, fully intent on finishing this one as he looked out at the city streets. Things seemed calm and peaceful as cars drove by and people walked up and down the sidewalk. Things looked the same as they always did but somehow felt more peaceful. As much as Snow had hurt Bigby perhaps it was all worth it? No… It was, ALL worth it. People were safe now. Snow had made her choices and Bigby knew he couldn't change that. As much pain as he felt it was all worth it knowing that everyone was safe. Besides, it was more of a reflection on her than it was on him.
Just than Bigby watched as Colon walked up with a six pack of beer cans in his mouth before placing them down so that he could talk. "Hey Bigby, what's up?" Colon greeted. "Nothing much Colon." Bigby said with a shrug as he flicked his ashes on the ground. "It's Snow, isn't it?" Colon asked with concern for his friend The Big Bad Wolf.
Bigby sighed and looked away as he let out a puff of smoke. "Look, pal, I know it's rough… But Snow white is a Bitch anyhow." Said Colon. "Colon!" Bigby began with a growl as his eyes flashed yellow before regaining control over his anger. Why should he bother defending her? He still loved her but Colon was probably right. "Geez pal, she really did a number on your heart didn't she? Blew it down like a house of straw am I right?" Colon joked. "Colon…" Bigby growled again before taking another drag of his Huff&Puff. "Alright I'm sorry. It's all in the past, am I right?" Said colon. "Right…" Bigby grumbled before taking another drag of his cigarette. "Hey, what do you say we go upstairs and have a drink? I brought beers." Colon offered hopefully. "Alright Colon, you win." Bigby said with a weak smile before heading upstairs with Colon, taking his unfinished Huff&Puff with him.
Once up in his room Bigby poured Colon and himself a beer before placing Colon's on the floor in front of him and then sitting down in his blue chair. "So how you holding up Bigby?" Colon asked with concern. "I don't know man… I'm happy that everyone is safe, and as much as it hurts I am coming to terms with the whole Snow White thing, but I still got a lot on my mind." Bigby said before finishing his cigarette and taking a drink of his beer.
"Oh, like what?" Asked Colon. "Well, putting the whole Snow White thing aside. I keep thinking about what happened a few months ago. I can't help wondering if I could have done some things differently, or if there was something I missed. On top of that I need to find a partner. I can't do this on my own…" Bigby said sadly. "It doesn't really matter. People are safe and the crooked man is off the street. You got justice for Faith and Lilly. Who cares if Snow doesn't see it that way? As far as a partner goes… I'm available." Colon said before lapping up some of his beer.
"Yea, I thought about that already… And no offense, but you're a pig. No thumbs." Said Bigby. "Oh I see how it is. Discriminating against the thumbless. How do you sleep with yourself at night? All kidding aside it's probably for the best. I'd probably be bacon within a week." Colon said before returning to his beer.
Bigby sighed "I don't know Colon… I keep thinking about Mary. Yea, I killed Dee and The Crooked Man too but the Tweedles were motivated by greed and money, that's why they worked for the crooked man. And The Crooked man intended to control and harm everyone while disguising it as helping them. So I don't feel so bad about killing them, but Mary? Somehow I can't help but feel like she was just another one of the crooked man's victims. Yea she was bad, but what made her that way? And did the crooked man just take advantage of a hurting girl and use her to do his dirty work?" Said Bigby before downing his beer.
"Wait, Mary? You mean Bloody Mary?" Colon asked with surprise. Bigby nodded somberly. "Oh come on Bigby, she shot you in the liver with a silver bullet and then broke your arm. You can't possibly be telling me you feel sorry for her?" Colon said with surprise. "I know she tried to kill me… But somehow what she did to me, isn't nearly as bad as what Snow did to me... I never wanted to kill her Colon, but she gave me no choice. I thought that I hated her, but when I killed her, I found that I forgave her somehow." Bigby said sorrowfully.
"I see. What about Georgie and Vivian? Were they victims in this too?" Colon asked curiously. Bigby sighrd as he rubbed the back of his neck. "I'm not sure Colon. Like Mary I don't understand what happened in their lives to make them turn down the path they did. What I do know is that The Crooked man isn't the one that got them started on that path. They made all their choices on their own. So when The Crooked Man came along all he had to do was take over. From what I gathered they joined because they wanted protection. Which tells me that they knew what they were doing was wrong and wanted a way to get away with it. It was Vivian that created the ribbons that were used to kill Faith and Lilly. And it was Georgie that pulled the ribbons off, which is what killed them. So I guess they were just as guilty as The Crooked Man. Even if The Crooked Man didn't come along the outcome might have been the same for Faith and Lilly. But if you're asking if I killed them, then no. Vivian had already killed herself when I got to the Pudding And Pie. And Gorgie wanted me to kill him to put him out of his misery so I did. But I only killed him out of mercy so he wouldn't suffer. I made it quick." Bigby said sounding a bit sad and unsure. "Oh… Well, I agree that I'm not sure if they were victims or not but it sounds to me like their blood isn't on your hands." Colon said sounding slightly disturbed.
"Yea… Thanks Colon." Bigby said with a weak smile. "Any time pal." Colon said before returning to his beer. As Colon finished his beer Bigby got up to get two more from the kitchen. Returning from the Kitchen Bigby refilled Colon's cup before returning to his chair as he cracked open the top of his can.
"So how do you know Mary is dead?" Asked colon. "What?" Bigby asked with surprise. "How do you know Bloody Mary is dead?" Colon asked again. "Um… Because I killed her?" Bigby said before drinking his beer. "Are you sure about that? Bloody Mary is a powerful and legendary fable, almost as much so as you are." Said Colon.
"Don't you think that if Mary was still alive that she would have come seeking revenge?" Bigby asked before returning to his beer. "Maybe not. Maybe like you she let the grudge go. Or maybe she's afraid of you." Said Colon. "Yea, right." Bigby said sarcastically before finishing his beer and throwing the empty can somewhere in the corner.
"There is only one way to find out." Said Colon. "Oh yea? And what's that?" Asked Bigby. "You own a Mirrior. Say her name five times. Legend has it she has to show up. Well, if she is alive that is…" Said Colon.
