The morning sunlight was bright behind Mac's eyelids, so she turned over before opening her eyes. She came face-to-face with Harm's back, his broad shoulders blocking most of her vision. Waking up next to him was something she was still getting used to. They weren't living together yet - they weren't even exclusively dating, either. But Harm and Mac were together, and that was all that they cared about.
In the wake of Mac's engagement ending and Harm's subsequent break up with Renee, Harm and Mac had finally found in each other what they both had been searching everywhere else for. Ever since they'd been inseparable, as inseparable as they could be considering they were trying to keep their relationship a secret.
As tedious and - at times - stressful as it was, Mac had to admit there was something thrilling about it. The whole thing felt very Austean, very Shakespearean. Holding hands in the elevator when no one else was there, stealing kisses behind closed office doors, not leaving each other's apartments once their working dinners finished. Little things like that.
It was silly, Mac knew that, but she still loved it.
Also touch; Harm and Mac couldn't get enough of each other in that respect. Mac had never really been into having her personal space invaded. With Mic and Dalton, Mac had never been too keen on physical affection outside of what was necessary to maintain a romantic relationship. She thought it was just a personal preference until she got with Harm…then it didn't take her long to piece together that she was definitely someone who enjoyed physical touch.
Turns out the problem wasn't her. Mic and Dalton were the problems, and Mac was shocked that it took her that long to realize that. She did go to Duke for law school, after all.
Most nights Harm and Mac spent together (there were few nights now that they didn't spend together), they fell asleep in each other's arms. Usually they would shift away from each other during the night, but still. Mac was getting comfortable dozing off to the sound of Harm's heartbeat.
Harm was still sound asleep, so Mac had to move carefully to keep from waking him up. She shifted her weight towards him so that her chest was pressing against his back. Draping one leg over his thighs, Mac snuck one of her arms around his waist. She placed her chin gently on his shoulder, pressing her cheek against his.
"Good morning," Harm murmured, his head still half-buried in the pillow.
"Hi," Mac greeted, placing a kiss on his cheek. "Are you not going on a run today? I thought you'd be up by now."
Harm lifted his head from the pillow, turning to get a look at Mac. "Sundays are my days off," he replied. "Plus there's an incredibly sexy woman laying on top of me right now, so I can't really move."
His voice was thick and raspy in that certain way that drove Mac crazy. She smirked. "I just wanted to snuggle."
"I do love your snuggles."
"I know you do," Mac nuzzled her nose into the nape of Harm's neck, inhaling. It was a mix of his cologne, detergent, and a scent that was uniquely his - it was absolutely intoxicating.
Harm closed his eyes and lowered his face back into the pillow. "Do you like being the big spoon?" he asked, voice muffled.
"Yeah," she nodded. "I'm looking into trying new things in the bedroom."
"Oh really?" Harm chuckled.
Mac reached up to run her fingers through Harm's hair. "What about you? Do you like being the little spoon?"
"I do enjoy trying new things in the bedroom."
"Uh-huh."
Harm turned over so he was now facing Mac. He wrapped his arms around her waist, pressing his face into the fabric of her t-shirt - which was actually Harm's t-shirt that she'd claimed as her own.
"What are you doing?" Mac asked.
"Letting you snuggle me," Harm responded.
"Oh-"
"Shhhhhh."
"Sorry," Mac lowered her voice to a whisper.
Harm looked up at her. "It's 0700 on a Sunday," he told her, "We can sleep in a little longer."
Mac frowned. "I thought we were going to go on a run."
"You can still go on a run," he answered. "I'll stay here and keep our collective side of the bed warm."
"I can't go, though," Mac feigned a frown. "I have an incredibly sexy man laying on top of me right now."
"Right," Harm opened one eye. "So you think I'm sexy?"
Mac playfully swatted his arm. "Harm."
Another thing about Harm and Mac was that they were incredibly, almost insufferably flirty with each other. To think that they used to make fun of how googly-eyed Bud and Harriet were for each other when they first started dating was laughable now. It was probably a good thing they were keeping things secret, or else everyone at JAG would be sick of them.
Mac didn't act like she knew everything there was to know about love, but she did know one thing. She had never, ever, been this head over heels for someone before.
"You know I've never been this in love with anyone before, right?" Harm asked, reading her mind.
She stared down at him in disbelief. "What did you just say?" she asked. For a moment, Mac actually thought she wasn't hearing things right. "Did you just say-"
"I love you," Harm grinned up at her. "Either that or you've been putting drugs in my coffee every morning."
Mac laughed and shook her head. "I haven't been drugging your coffee, I promise."
"Then I guess I'm in love," Harm tightened his grip on Mac's waist, pulling her closer to him. "I don't let just any woman be the big spoon, you know."
"I'm honored," Mac bent down and kissed Harm sweetly on the lips. "I love you too, for the record."
"For the record? That's very official of you."
"I take my declarations of love very seriously."
"I see."
Wrapping her arms around Harm, her favorite Flyboy, Mac closed her eyes and settled back under the covers. Harm was right, there was plenty more of the day left to be spent sleeping in - and they could forget about running, too. Mac wasn't a betting woman, but she would wager that her and Harm would be getting their cardio in later, in a different way.
Harm turned his head towards Mac, pressing his ear against her collarbone. Mac looked down, giving him a strange look. "What are you doing?" she asked.
"Listening to your heartbeat."
I wrote this one shot last night before I went to bed. It was such a cute idea that I just couldn't get it out of my head until I typed it up. Originally I was going to try and make it a part of a longer fic, but I decided it was good enough to stand alone as its own piece. Harm and Mac go through so much, why not just let them stay in bed and cuddle?
Anyways, thanks for reading! Happy Labor Day to those who celebrate!
