Chapter 1

She didn't want to fight the world again. She knew she was exaggerating, but she couldn't help feeling that with Edward Cullen's disappearance, she had lost her chance for a good life. She felt as if with his disappearance she lost the chance for anything good to happen in her life.

She didn't have much time to think. Shortly after she looked at her alarm clock she heard Charlie's voice shouting from downstairs - "Bella!? Don't wait for me to have dinner. Today I'll be home late from work!"

Reluctantly, she sat up and looked around the room. She knew that nothing had changed, but each time she hoped to see the familiar silhouette of a vampire in a chair.

"Well... Time for school… "

Bella was unable to miss the murmur of the conversations she heard as soon as she entered Forks High School. Gossip. The mill that drives the social life of almost every community. Like it or not, she picked up the scraps of conversations. There was a slight smile on her face as she realized that this time the rumors weren't about her condition after the Cullens had left. She thought that a new topic for conversation had apparently been found.

It was only after a while that remorse caught her. Something happened to someone, and she was relieved that she wasn't gossiped about after all.

When she was passing a ginger girl who was a year below her class, she heard a whisper - "... did you hear what happened? Angela Weber finally got hers... ".

Her jaw tightened with nerves. What happened? What happened to Angela as she basked in her pain?

She walked over to Mike, who smiled at her. Earlier, she had ignored him, so she hoped that her question wouldn't surprise him. - "What happened to Angela? I hear she's in trouble."

"Well..." He swallowed, as if wondering whether to answer her. - "She and Ben broke up. I don't like gossiping. If you want to know the details, talk to her."

She didn't know what to say. She sighed before, trembling in her voice, "Do you know where she is now?"

Mike was a good friend. There was a hint of approval in his eyes. - "Yes. She is there." - He pointed to the girl sitting on a bench down the hall. - "If you want to talk to her, be gentle. You've been in a similar situation recently."

She recognized her. She walked up tentatively. With each hesitant step, she became more and more aware of the pain it caused to her loved ones at the sight of her breakdown after Edward's departure. She sat down next to the girl and put her arm around her. She felt Angela flinch, but she didn't reject her.

"Angela... Do you want to talk?"

Angela looked at her blankly. But Bella felt instinctively that her eyes weren't only the pain of the breakup.

"Yes..." - What came out of her mouth was a whisper rather than her usual confident voice "...but not here."

Bella wasn't surprised. She looked at the faces of the other students. It was clear that they were trying to pretend they weren't listening. She didn't hesitate. She picked it up and knowing that she had to be strong for her and for herself, she confidently walked with her to her truck.

"Charlie won't be home until late. This will be the perfect place to talk. Nobody will disturb us."

As soon as they pulled up to her house, Bella got out of the car and helped Angela out of it. - "We're already there. Follow me inside."

She noticed that the girl's body began to tremble. As if she was holding back from crying.

How could I not notice anything? Holy shit, I was a terrible friend. When I was with him, I forgot about the friendships I had made. When he left, I forgot how to live. It's been over six months now. Enough to mourn the loss of a loved one.

Eventually they managed to get inside. Angela sat down on the couch without a word.

After a moment of silence during which Bella put the water and snacks on the table, she sat down next to her friend, took her hands in hers and looking straight into her eyes, asked - "What happened? You and Ben... You seemed so much in love. For outsiders, you were one of those high school couples who get married after college. What happened? What changed? I know I'm not a person who can give advice, especially after what happened between me and Edward... But maybe... Maybe talk will help you."

She sighed. - "That's the problem. Nothing has changed. Time and time again he promised to change, but he didn't change. On the contrary. He was getting worse… I shouldn't talk about it." She closed her eyes. She looked as if she remembered something.

"How it didn't change anything?" Bella was confused. "If you don't want to talk about it, I'll understand. However, if you choose to confide in, know that you can trust me. I'm not telling anyone. I will also not judge. I made a lot of mistakes myself, so I don't even know if I would have the right to judge you."

She wiped the tears that had appeared in the corners of her eyes with her fingers and began to speak. This time her voice was full of confidence. Bella wondered how many times Angela had pretended that she was fine when her life was falling apart.

"He wasn't who I thought he was. Controlling, aggressive... Physically and mentally... He promised he would change and I stupid every time I believed him. I believed because I love him. And it will probably be a long time before I stop loving him. Do you want to hear about how it started?"

Bella nodded in confirmation. With each word from her friend, she realized more and more that her relationship with Edward had closed her to everything but his family.

"I was too... Ah, I don't even have words for that. I was blind. I didn't even suspect your relationship looked like this. I hope you don't believe in that what he's telling you. You are one of the best people I met after moving to Forks."

"It's hard not to believe what someone tells you every day." - Tears appeared on Angela's face once again. - "Will you stay with me until I recover from this relationship? Maybe we could support each other?"

"Yes, I'll be with you."

At that moment, Bella realized that she didn't need a friend like Alice. One that wanted to change her. She needed a friend who would support her in a difficult moment and one who wouldn't be afraid to accept help from her. After all, that's what friendship is all about. On the giving and on the receiving. It's a mutual relationship.

Finally, a shy smile appeared on the girl's face.

They spent the rest of the lonely afternoon watching movies and talking about their problems. Not only the romantic ones. Bella was proud of herself because she finally told someone about what hurt her about Edward leaving. About what caused her doubts during their relationship. It just omitted what was related to the vampire factor.

Later, when she was lying in bed after taking her friend home, she couldn't fall asleep. She thought about Angela and Ben's story.

At first, Ben was caring and sweet. Like Edward. After the first few weeks of being together, he began to suggest that she should lose weight and start wearing makeup. Edward made her go to the prom and Alice decided what to wear. They both had a birthday party she didn't want. At first, Angela didn't care about her boyfriend's comments, because she thought they were normal. She didn't care about Edward and Alice's behavior because she thought they loved her.

The only difference was that there was no physical abuse by Edward. But wouldn't watching sleep before they got together be considered violence?

In the end, she saw in bright light what she hadn't wanted to see for so long. Edward was controlling her. Edward made her self-confidence wiped out. Edward changed her so that she fit his image of the perfect mate.

"It's going to be hard for me to get out of this, but I'll make it. I will not be alone in this. We will support each other." she whispered before turning off the light and closing her eyes.

That night, for the first time in months, she had no nightmare.
