Alec was in love with Jace.

He had known it for a while, but Jace never showed any signs of liking him back. Every day, seeing Jace brought Alec happiness, but also, pain. Jace could be annoyingly flaunty at times, and he was all too eager to rush into danger (which Alec tried his best to protect him from), but in the end, Alec still loved him.

He had never come out to anyone except Isabelle for obvious reasons. The Clave hated gay people, and Alec was worried Jace would hate him too. So that was why Alec tried his best to hide it from Jace, with the faint hope that one day, Jace would return his feelings.

Then Clary Fray came along.

Alec saw immediately how well she and Jace got along, how all too eager Jace was to tag along with Clary to go to her house, to the silent city, to... everywhere. And Alec felt pain because of course he was too late, of course Jace would find someone else to love, of course-

"I'm dating Simon."

Alec froze as Clary's words got through to him. He stared for a while, then said, "What?"

Clary sighed. "Simon... just confessed he was in love with me. And I... I love him back, so... I said yes. We're dating now. I know you hate me, and if it's because you think I like Jace, you're wrong. I don't think Jace likes me either, I think he likes someone else." The way she said those words...

"You can't be right." Alec's voice wavered some. "He's never shown any hints that he likes me, that he even likes guys…"

Clary snorted. "He does. And he definitely likes you. Ask him out, or wait for him to ask you out, I guess. I just wanted to tell you."

Alec stared at her for a moment, then swallowed. "...Thank you."

Okay, maybe he still had hope with Jace after all.
