It was an overcast Saturday in the fall of 1931, and it was Edward and Winry's day off to spend with their family. They had breakfast, chores, some play time, and lunch. Then the twins had to take a nap. Sophie and Kisa were playing with dolls in Sophie's room. Kisa was staying with them for two weeks while Alphonse, Mei, and Shoyo went to Central to do demonstrations of alkahestery. But they didn't want Kisa to miss school so she was staying with her aunt and uncle.
Lucy and Ben went to their friends' house to play. It was cool out but not freezing so they went outside to play. Lucy was in red overalls and a white sweater and began climbing the tree that was in front of their neighbors house. She had done it so many times before yet. Ben had too, and he was climbing up right behind her.
Then Lucy slipped and fell. She screamed, and Ben's eyes grew large as he saw her fall. His friend, Cody, stood still at the base of the tree. She landed on her arm and cried out. Cody's dad heard her scream and ran out to her.
Winry was enjoying her book with Edward on the couch with her when the phone rang. She marked her place and got up. 'Probably a customer trying to make an appointment,' she thought just before she answered. She picked up the phone and answered.
"Hey Winry, it's John Baker. The kids were playing at my house and Lucy fell out of the tree. She says her arm hurts." Winry could hear Lucy crying in the back. Her heart dropped.
"Ok, I'll be right there," Winry said and hung up the phone.
"What's going on?" Edward asked.
Winry was already putting her coat and hat on. "Lucy fell at the Baker's house. I'm going over to check on her. She says her arm hurts."
"I'm coming with you," Edward said but immediately realized he couldn't.
"No, you need to stay here. The boys are still napping," Winry told him even though he had realized it.
"Damn it! Just call and let me know what's going on," Edward said frustrated.
"I will. Love you," Winry reached up with her face.
Edward leaned forward and kissed her. "Love you too."
Winry was out the door and walking fast toward the neighbor's house. She arrived and was met by her son. "Mom! Lucy fell from the tree! And her arm hurts really bad!" he said choking up because he was almost crying.
"It'll be okay. Take me to her," Winry was trying to stay calm as her son was almost hysterical.
Ben led her inside to a kitchen table. Lucy was sitting with Mr. and Mrs. Baker who had given her an ice pack for her arm.
Lucy started crying again as soon as she saw her mom. Winry gently hugged her and looked at her arm. It wasn't easy to tell if it was broken but if Lucy was hurting this bad, she might have broken it. Out of all the weekends, it seems like Lucy breaks her arm when her uncle and aunt are out of town. "Well Lucy, I think we need to go see Dr. Turner and get an X-ray. Let me call and see if we can head over there right now."
Lucy's crying calmed down to a sniffle. Ben stood with Cody just watching the scene unfold. Winry called the doctor, who told them they could come in to the clinic right away. Then she called Edward to tell him the plan. Winry then sent Ben home, and took Lucy to the clinic.
Ben makes it home and sees Edward with the twins, who had just woken up from their nap and were playing with toys in the living room. Edward was waiting by the phone, and looked up to see Ben walking in the door looking rather down. "Dad, Lucy's hurt."
"I know. Mr. Baker called and told us that she hurt her arm. Are you okay?"
Ben nodded but then sniffled some. He was trying not to cry. "I just feel bad. I should've protected her better. But we've climbed that tree so many times before."
Edward came over to him and shook Ben's hair. "It's okay. It was just an accident. It happens. Back when I was in the military, I broke my arm and a few ribs. And look at it. It's perfectly fine. So even if Lucy's arm is broken, she'll be fine."
Ben nodded and was started to cheer up a little bit. Sophie and Kisa came downstairs. Kisa noticed the sad scene. "What's wrong Uncle Ed?"
"Lucy fell from a tree, and she hurt her arm. She's at the doctor's right now getting taken care of with Aunty Winry. So don't worry," Edward informed her.
Sophie then told her father "Dad? I'm hungry."
Edward looked at the time and realized he needed to start dinner. It was technically Winry's turn but she was preoccupied. He figured he would go ahead and make dinner since he had the ingredients. "Right, let's start cooking. Wait a little longer."
"But I'm hungry now!" Sophie whined.
"Fine, I'll give you some applesauce. Let me start boiling the pasta first."
Kisa asked "What's for dinner Uncle Ed?"
"Baked mac and cheese. Wanna help?" Edward asked. Kisa nodded. Edward put on his apron and gave Kisa an apron. When the pasta was boiling, he gave bowls of apple sauce to Kisa and Sophie. Then Hugh and Henry noticed and they had to have applesauce too.
After getting the pasta mixed with the ingredients and then placed in the oven to bake, Winry came in the door with Lucy. Lucy's face was red and swollen from crying. Her arm was in a sling and wrapped up in a brace. Winry announced "Well it's broken. But it's a clean break so we just need to keep it in a sling for six weeks."
Edward nodded and informed their children to not touch Lucy's arm. Edward then told Lucy "Uncle Al and Aunt Mei can help with your arm when they get back. We'll just have to hold on until then."
Winry then noticed the time. "It's getting late and I still have to make dinner."
Kisa then beamed a radiant smile. "Nope, Uncle Ed and I made dinner."
Winry was so relieved. "Really? What did you two make?"
"Mac and cheese!" Kisa said.
Winry gave her a hug and kiss. "Thank you Kisa. And thanks Ed. That's a huge weight off my shoulders."
Edward scoffed "Well of course we made dinner. What did you expect?"
Winry walked to him and gave him a kiss on the cheek. "Thank you, Ed."
"Don't get all sappy. I was just helping out, you know," Edward said arrogantly like he saved the day.
Winry smiled. They all had dinner together and ate every last bit of the macaroni and cheese. Winry then made an observation. "Well, this is the first broken bone of our family. I'm kind of surprised it wasn't Sophie."
Sophie was offended. "Why would you think it would be me?"
Edward raised an eyebrow at her. "You're the most reckless one. You're always climbing something. Walking on top of the stone fences. In fact, just yesterday I found you sitting on the damn balcony dangling your legs over the side. If you fell from there,"
Sophie crossed her arms. "And I didn't fall. I just have better balance than others."
Lucy yelled "What's that supposed to mean?"
Winry stood up "Don't even start. Sophie, you need to be more careful. Lucy, your balance is just fine. Now everyone go put your plates in the sink. Ben, it's your turn to do dishes. Lucy won't be able to do them for a while."
Winry sat down. Her and Edward sighed in exasperation. Winry told Edward "Remember when everyone was surprised at how calm Lucy and Ben were? Well then we got Sophie, and she is the child everyone expected us to have."
"Yeah, she gets that temper from you," Edward crossed his arms.
"What?! Well she gets her recklessness from you," Winry punched his shoulder.
"Me?!" Then Edward thought about it and realized she was right. "Well she also get her brain from me. She's the smartest one in her class."
"As if! Well she definitely gets the love of alchemy from you. She is definitely your child." Winry told Edward and he agreed to that. He was glad one of his kids loved alchemy. Though the twins weren't quite old enough to have an interest in it yet. He was hoping at least one of them would.
