Author Notes - Okay, so... when I publish a story, that usually means I have at least four chapters already done. Why? It ensures that I'm dedicated to finishing it. Nothing worse than publishing a single chapter and then having no idea where to go from there. This often leads to the story being finished long before the final chapter actually gets uploaded.
I say this to explain that I am almost done with the final chapter as we speak (or read?), and thus will be releasing these chapters out a little faster. This story could be written so quickly because it's based on a pre-existing story.
CHAPTER THIRTEEN - WHAT ELSE CAN LOLA DO?
Lincoln Loud was on his own. Lynn and Lisa did not want to deal with the inevitable hurricane that was sure to wreak havoc, and Lucy desperately did not want to be seen by anyone else in the family (four, or anyone other than Luna, was more than enough). And besides, Lucy's vision said that Lincoln would have to be the one to hug Lola; the other sisters weren't mentioned or seen at all.
So, Lincoln stood in front of Lola and Lana's door. It was the only room in the house (other than the parents') that was shared between two people, because even Ruidosa believed that the twins should never be separated. Even the door, like the room behind it, was split down the middle, depicting seemingly the same girl but with different clothing and hairstyles on each side.
His hand was shaking as it reached the doorknob, and he swallowed back his nerves. Well, there was no use in delaying, unless he wanted to hear Lori wail from her room some more. And no, she had not gotten any better overnight. Luan, meanwhile, hadn't left her room because even with the photos she struggled to stay as 'Luan'. Her door had gone out, but her loss was her gift going completely out of control.
Lisa's was fading as well now. In fact, it seemed like Leni's was the only one still glowing as brightly as ever.
'Do it, Lincoln…' He muttered to himself. 'Just open the door and get it over with.'
Ruidosa's tiles moved underneath him, pushing him forward just a little. Even the house was telling him to get on with it. No less scared than before, he pushed the door open and cringed when it made the slightly squeaky sound.
'L-Lola…'
The twins' room had to have been the most impressive of the rooms, which was certainly saying something, and definitely the biggest. It had been split down the middle, from the door, with an invisible line. On the left side, was a massive jungle tree covered in foliage with a big river passing by. It was full of animals, had a big mossy garage to the side, and - of course - the whole floor was covered in mud.
The right side, on the other hand, looked like something straight out of a children's fairytale book - cotton candy trees, rainbows in the sky, fresh green hills, and a pretty pink princess castle watching over everything. You didn't have to be a genius like Lisa to figure out who the halves belonged to.
Lincoln could see Lana playing in the mud with all of her animal friends, but Lola was nowhere in sight. Still, he stepped into the room as quietly and as carefully as he could, making sure he didn't do anything that would break the rules of 'Lolaland' again.
'Heeey, Lola.' He said, as awkwardly as he felt. 'I know the past couple of days have been… stressful. And we all know what happens to you when you're stressed. Heh heh… Ah, those pesky hurricanes! So, maybe we should just, ya know, hug it out?'
There was still nothing. Luna had said that Lola was in her room, hence why he was here to begin with, though the rock-loving girl couldn't begin to guess why he would want to go into the devil's room. So Lincoln couldn't understand why he couldn't see her anywhere; it wasn't like Lola was exactly subtle. If it wasn't for Lana and her animal friends, the room would've been far too quiet for Lincoln's comfort. He could hear a thundercloud, but it was muffled and he couldn't tell where the sound was coming from. Judging by the muffled nature of the sound, however, he figured it must've come from that big princess castle.
'I know you're mad, Lola,' He said, gulping. 'B-But I think a little hug can resolve everything!'
He stepped onto the drawbridge leading to the castle, and that must've been a step too far because the sound of thunder ripped into his eardrums.
'AHHH!'
While he was busy trying to recover from the shock and ringing sound, Lola jumped down from a balcony above like a ninja and landed on the drawbridge in front of him. The cloud above her head was almost as big as the one she had during the dinner, but it was a lot darker to make up for it.
'WHY ARE YOU HERE?!' Lola screamed. 'YOU RUINED THE DINNER, AND YOU MIGHT RUIN EVERYTHING ELSE TOO!'
Lola had her teeth gritted like she was holding back a demon, and her eyes were twitching (much like Lori's, which was not a good sign), but otherwise had restrained her anger. How on earth she was managing that was something Lincoln would never understand.
'Y-You seem angry…' Lincoln said, adding a nervous laugh. 'Do you need a hug?'
'A hug?' Lola repeated. 'A HUG? You really think a HUG is going to fix everything?!'
'Uh… I-I was hoping it would. But it would definitely make you feel better!'
While he was debating if he'd get out of this situation alive, Lola gave him the mother of all death glares before she began pulling on her hair. She muttered that same little mantra to herself… clear skies, clear skies, clear skies… and for once it did not seem to be helping at all.
'Lincoln…' She muttered. 'Get out of my room, now, before I kill you in a hurricane!'
Lincoln's fake smile stretched out so far that it hurt. 'Y-You wouldn't kill your own brother, would you?'
'Not on purpose, I can tell you that much!'
He backed away, hands up in defence, and turned his head to Lana. The messy little girl simply gave him a look that said 'you are on your own, bro', which only made him more nervous. Mostly because he was all but certain he'd get a lightning bolt to the face any moment now.
'Clear skies, Lola… clear skies…'
'Come on, Lola.' Lincoln said, holding out his arms. 'Just one little hug? I'm sure it'll make you feel better. And then, maybe, you won't be storming so much-'
'You think I want to STOP storming?!'
That shut Lincoln right up. Seeing his 'dumb stupid face' (her words, not mine) only made Lola sigh heavily in deep, deep frustration. The cloud whitened up a little, but still emitted loud thundering sounds.
'Being able to control the weather sounds cool, right?' She said. 'Well, it IS. Or at least it would be if I didn't have to KEEP IT IN all the time! It's always 'Lola, you have a cloud' this, and 'Lola, you might cause a hurricane' that. Well, I was given this stupid gift to control the weather. HOW ABOUT YOU LET ME CONTROL THE DANG WEATHER?!'
'Lola, I-'
'SHUT UP, LINCOLN! I'm stressed enough already, having to keep in these stupid emotions or I'll destroy the town or something - thank you sooo much, Ruidosa, for connecting my super cool gift with my EMOTIONS - and now you show up thinking you can fix my horror over possibly losing my gift WITH A SIMPLE HUG?!'
'I-'
With that, Lola unleashed all her anger at once by screaming out in pure rage as loudly as her little lungs could manage. Lincoln had to clasp his hands over his ears, and most of Lana's animal friends scattered away in a panic. Then again, maybe that panic was due to the massive waves of fire that had burst from Lola's hands.
Wait, fire?!
'Lola?!' Lincoln cried. 'You can make fire?!'
'I CAN'T MAKE FIRE, YOU-'
Only then did Lola notice the darkened grass around her, burnt to an absolute crisp while some of the embers still remained burning. She stared at these massive scorch marks, and Lincoln braced for impact for she was sure to explode over how he had 'made her burn the grass'. But that never came. When he dared to look again, she was still staring at the devastation she caused.
'I can… create fire?' She asked, hardly able to believe her own eyes.
'You… you didn't know that?' Lincoln replied, answering a question with another question.
'How was I supposed to know that?! Every time I tried to do anything, I was shut down because it was 'too dangerous'. But now, I just learnt that I can…'
She tried to create fire again, on purpose this time, but nothing came out of her hands. Thinking about it for a moment, she proceeded to replay that entire scene in her head once again. Just thinking about Lincoln's stupidity (once again, her words) got her blood boiling, and then…
'WOAH!'
She created a little ball of fire in her hand, somehow not burning her gloves, and this time she was able to keep it there! Even as her mood improved upon seeing it, it remained burning as strong as ever until she threw it like a baseball.
'OW!' Lana shouted, rubbing her burnt behind. 'LOOOLAAA!'
Lola snickered to herself, like the little supervillain she was. 'This entire time, I thought all I could do was rain and hurricanes. But I could actually make fire too?!' She adopted a rather evil-looking grin. 'What else can I do?'
Lincoln held his arms out again. 'You could give me a hug, maybe?'
Lola ignored his request entirely and began brainstorming - perhaps literally - some more of those emotions she hadn't been allowed to express until now. Having dealt with fire, she focused on the complete opposite: something cold. She thought back on all the times she felt 'cold' as it were, like when the other girls excluded her from their games thanks to her hurricanes, or her favourite lady from The Dream Boat ended up being disqualified by day three.
'How… could they… IGNORE ME?!' She cried, her voice going from a mutter to a shout in a moment.
Suddenly, everything went white, and Lincoln found himself shivering on the spot. For a moment, he had assumed he had gone blind due to seeing nothing but white around him. That was until he saw Lola rolling around in what he realised was snow. Snow that covered every square inch of that beautiful green grass.
'I knew I could make frost,' She said, throwing a bunch of snow everywhere. 'But I never knew I could do something like this.'
'Oh, would you look at that!' Lincoln said. 'I-It's kinda cold in here. M-Maybe you'll need a hug to warm up?'
Once again, Lola completely ignored him and focused only on her castle. That 'cold' feeling returned to her, and she had a little grin on her face as little ice crystals formed at her fingertips. All she had to do was point at that castle, and in just a moment the pretty pink walls were replaced with cool shiny walls made entirely of ice.
And Lincoln's jaw dropped.
'You… you can do that?' He asked. 'Lola, that's-'
'It's BEAUTIFUL!' Lola yelled, taking the words out of his mouth. 'I could do this the whole time?! I HAVE TO DO MORE! Now, what's another mood they don't like? Ooh, being free is a good one!'
That would be absurdly easy, given how free she was already feeling. Even if her parents stormed (heh) into her room that very moment, she wouldn't care. If anything, that would make her feel even more powerful! In fact, she was thinking about it at that very moment. Seeing the horrified looks on her parents' faces as she ignored their commands and did whatever the heck she wanted, feeling as free as the wind itself.
Wind itself!
'WOOAAA–AAA-AAAH!'
'LOLA!'
Lola had summoned the power of wind alright (heh heh), for she had lifted herself right off the ground! It was only a few feet or so, but she was certainly hovering above the ground like she could fly all on her own. The fear of being high up was quickly diminished by that wonderful feeling of being free, hence the brief moment of thunder, before she soared into the air even higher.
'Oh yeah, baby!' She yelled. 'This is what I'm talking about!'
Lincoln forgot all about the hug he was supposed to be giving her, for now he was watching Lola fly around her castle's towers as though that had been her gift all along! Snow and leaves were left in a mess as she soared past them faster than she could run, and she could not get enough of the wind brushing past her face.
It was almost like watching a baby bird taking flight for the first time, figuratively and literally.
'Come on, Lincoln!' Lola yelled, diving his way like an eagle about to eat him. 'Let's go show everyone what I can do!'
'H-?'
Lola grabbed him by the wrist and lifted him up into the air, dragging him through the door with her while refusing to let him or herself touch the ground once. Somehow, Lincoln wasn't dangling from her grasp but instead was fully-supported by a little gust of wind underneath him. He couldn't remember the last time she had so much control over anything, let alone her own powers.
Once she had made it out of her door, she pushed the wind to guide her upwards into the sky. Lincoln could see the entirety of Ruidosa and even the town from up there, and yet he was hardly frightened that he would fall. The wind keeping him up felt almost solid, like a soft little pillow hovering several metres above the ground. Still, Lola kept a good grip on his arm just in case.
'HEY EVERYONE!' Lola yelled, as loudly as she could. 'COME LOOK AT ME NOW!'
There wasn't much response from anyone, since it was still a little early and everyone was still in their rooms. No one was in a good mood after last night, except for Leni who was perfecting some gorgeously unique bouquets in secret. And one look at Lola's face told Lincoln that things were about to get hot, as it were. He could already feel her palm heating up.
'GET OUT HERE BEFORE I HAVE TO BURN YOUR ROOMS DOWN!' She screamed.
Since no one wanted to deny an angry Lola a request, lest they fall victim to a hurricane, most of the Loud family emerged from their doors. Lori remained in her place, mostly because she didn't even have it in her to leave her bed, and Luan was so embarrassed by her inability to go back to normal that she didn't show herself, but everyone else was there.
'Lola?!' Rita yelled. 'Are you… flying?'
'That isn't fair!' Lynn said. 'She gets two gifts, and the rest of us only get one?'
Lola laughed, though it sounded more like a cackle. 'This is all the same gift, baby! When I control the wind in such a way, I can FLY! And, thanks to Lincoln here, I've discovered that I can even control fire.'
Lynn scoffed. 'Fire? You've had your gift for a couple years and you've never done anything other than hurricanes.'
'With how erratic your emotions are,' Lisa said, stifling a yawn. 'It would be surprising if you went so long without realising that you could control fire until now.'
Before, Lola would've followed her parents' advice and ignored their words, not allowing herself to get angry. Today, however, she allowed every word to sink in and fuel that rage. It was like adding coal to a train, allowing the vehicle to move faster and faster.
'I'LL SHOW YOU FIRE!'
Two fireballs formed in her free arm as her body glowed with an orange aura. In just one motion, she tossed both flaming balls towards their victims - Lisa and Lynn. Both girls screamed and jumped out of the way. Lynn was able to dodge it without even trying, but Lisa did not avoid a slight singing of her behind.
'I-I stand corrected!' She said, rubbing the point of impact. 'That is indeed fire that has roasted my posterior. … Ow…'
Lola belted out another amazing evil laugh. Her fantastic mood created a little rainbow above her head, making for a rather silly contrast with the over-the-top evil she was displaying.
'Gimme a weather thing!' She declared. 'And I'll be able to do it and more!'
'Oh, oh!' Leni said, putting her hand up like a student in class. 'How about… hail?'
'Well, I already know I can do hail, but maybe…'
She returned to that horrible 'cold' feeling again, of being ignored. It astounded Lincoln how easily she could make herself feel a certain way, and wondered if she always had that 'skill' or if it was connected to her gift. Either way, a dark cloud formed overhead and little pebbles of solid ice fell from it. Lincoln braced for impact, but found that the ice was only falling over the tiles of the roof, creating a rhythmic sound far nicer than anything Lola had created before. In fact, you could even sing to it.
In the Loud House… in the Loud House…
'Okay, brah.' Luna said. 'What about you make us a sandstorm?'
'A sandstorm, huh? Okay, gimme a moment…'
Now, what were sandstorms like? Kinda like hurricanes, but a lot more obscuring. Taking that first thought and running with it, Lola imagined all those times she just wanted to be buried alive and surrounded by dirt… or sand, in this case. A few specks of sand floated around the air, being formed seemingly out of nowhere, before Lincoln's vision was suddenly obscured by a thick wall of swirling sand surrounding him everywhere he looked. Only by being so close to Lola was he safe, though he could hear a few sneezes and complaints about eye pain coming from his sisters in the 'outside world'.
'Okay, Lola!' He said. 'I think that's enough!'
And, with that, the sand dissipated and vanished, like it wasn't there at all. The only evidence of the sandy storm - other than some watering eyes - was the roofs covered in the yellow grains. The hail from before hadn't left, creating a somewhat odd image of small icy pebbles mixed in with the desert sand.
'LOOK AT ME NOW, PEASANTS!' Lola yelled, adding two more rainbows to the one from before. 'Now that Lola ain't afraid to show her emotions anymore, she has become a GODDESS! You best be thankful that you are my family, or I would strike you all down with lightning! Or fire. Or ice. Or sand. Or - maybe - even an earthquake! THE WORLD ITSELF IS MY OYSTER!'
Whatever emotion she was feeling now - 'super powerful' was the only way to describe it - caused three gigantic geysers to erupt from the ground behind Ruidosa, sprinkling the house with little droplets of water. Lincoln wasn't sure what Ruidosa's definition of 'weather' was, but if that included geysers, he couldn't imagine what else Lola was capable of.
Her yelling attracted the attention of Lori and Luan, who finally had the guts to leave their rooms. Lori was still a weeping mess, while Luan hadn't quite returned to normal yet. Right now, the jokester was as tall as Lori but had Lily's face, with hair like Leni's that was coloured black like Lucy's.
Luan looked up at her little sister in awe, her jaw literally falling to the floor (the perks of her gift). Lori, meanwhile, looked about ready to start crying again. Right before her was someone discovering new parts of their gift that they never knew they had, while she was still grieving over her own gift. She wanted to be proud of little Lola, but the bitterness of losing the one thing that made her feel important was too painful.
Only now did Lincoln find himself going a little green around the gills.
'Erm, Lola…' He said. 'Can we come in for a landing now? I don't know how much longer I can stand here in the air for.'
Normally, Lola would certainly not obey a request like that when she was so busy on the high. So it surprised Lincoln when she made the hail clouds and geysers disappear and dropped him off by the candle without a single complaint, while remaining in the air thanks to the wind. He just wished she dropped him off closer to the actual ground, but it gave him a great view of the candle.
Lola's door was just visible from this angle - it was glowing brighter than ever.
'ThankyouthankyouTHANKYOU!' She cried, in an adorable little voice. 'If you didn't make me so angry, I never would've known that I could do so much stuff!'
'Uh, you're welcome?' Lincoln said, not quite sure what to make of that.
'If anyone thinks they can stop Miss Lola Loud now, they'll have to think again. I'm the most powerful person in the world, and it's all thanks to you!'
Then, it happened - Lola leapt off her little wind platform and wrapped Lincoln up into an embrace stronger than any hug she had ever given someone before. The candle's light absolutely beamed like the sun itself, and Lincoln returned the loving hug as soon as he got over his shock.
Lynn - after coughing up some more sand - smiled. 'He did it! Lincoln actually got Lola to hug him!'
Lisa readjusted her glasses and grinned. 'Well, I had calculated this to be near impossible. I must've failed to take Lincoln's heart and stubbornness into account.'
And, from the shadows, another sister was smiling too. Everything seemed perfect now, for the candle was burning brightly and any pre-existing cracks vanished into thin air.
'LOLA! LINCOLN!' Rita yelled, interrupting the hug. 'What are you two doing?!'
Author Notes - Pepa is cursed. So, when I gave her gift to Lola, I wanted Lola to be able to use the gift for all the wonderful potential it had. By embracing her emotions, she essentially becomes a goddess. I made very sure that she could fly and summon fire/sand/ice/GEYSERS because of her emotions, not by working through them. Kinda the entire point is that she should be allowed to express herself. And now she is arguably the most broken of the Loud Sisters, especially since I can't give the gift of flight to Lily like I was tempted to.
