The new day was breaking and Isolde had felt like she hadn't slept at all which was hardly surprising with what awaited her. Isolde tied her curls into a tight bun, the less distractions she would the better. She put on her cream trousers with long black leather boots. A corset she thought would be best to put over her red patterned shirt, she was hoping the boning in the corset would offer better protection but left it loose enough to be able to breath.
The night before she had already been sharpening her sword as she placed the belt around her waist. The sword had been her Father's and she was hoping the sentiment of her choice would be on her side.
"Just breath" she told herself. At that moment, her maid knocked and entered.
"My Lady, it's almost time. Do you need any assistance?" The maid bit her lip.
"No thank you, Annabell. I believe everything is in order" she smiled at her loyal maid as she noted the worry on her face "It's going to be fine" making the statement for them both to feel at ease.
Isolde and Annabell placed their long capes on and left the manor house before any of the servants would be waking up. They made their way to the meadow, where she had agreed to meet the Prince. The morning dew made the wild cornflowers starting to bloom sparkle in the rising sun. For that moment it seemed like the most peaceful place in the world.
They both heard the sound of a horse's hooves galloping heavily into the far end of the meadow and that wonderful feeling of peace was darted from the picturesque scene.
"My Lady" questioned Annabell, the tone of worry in her voice not helping the nerves of Isolde.
Prince Sepitmus approached the woman and peered down at them from his horse, looking as dark as ever.
"My Lady Isolde you certainly know how to pick a spot for a duel" he greeted
"My Lord Prince, I would rather skip the pleasantries" she answered as she felt poor Annabell go stiff with terror at the exchange.
Sepitmus smiled at her as if this was just some game to him and replied "I didn't realise you were in such a hurry to die" as he dismounted his horse.
Isolde tried her best to ignore the remark as she turned to Annabell to remove her cape.
"Thank you, Annabell" and gave her maid a tight squeeze of her hands "Now if you would kindly hold the Prince's horse and wait by the tree opening"
Annabell with tears welled up in her eyes nodded to her mistress as the Prince handed the reins over, she hadn't dare make eye contact with him.
Isolde looked across at her opponent who didn't have an ounce of worry on his face, why would he? This was merely some entertainment for him
"It's not too late to apologise Lady Isolde" he teased, sensing her nerves.
"Apologise for what?" she flashed the anger in her eyes.
"For getting me out of bed so early for this childplay" he sneered.
"You continue to insult me Sir and will regret doing so" she answered but carried on before he tried to get into her head any more "Are you ready to begin?"
"Always" he grinned.
