The two Romulan ships went to warp, but Saavik ordered the Numancia to remain still. They were very close to the Dominion border, where they would presumably leave the Jem'Hadar, but she wanted to notify Starfleet first and maybe find a better solution for them. Actually, she had a lot to explain to Starfleet command, and a lot to keep to herself.

She went to her quarters again, sat in front of the computer terminal and thought of what she was about to say. Her sharp logical mind set carefully every word she would pronounce. Once satisfied with the result, she started the ship log's recording and spoke aloud; next, she recorded a similar message directed to Starfleet command.

When she finished, she went for her firepot and meditated; finally she was going to deal with her last emotions and put them in order. Now, she could only wait, and worring about Starfeet's answer was illogical.

After meditating, Saavik eyed the bunk for an instant, and then the computer. Since she was a child, she barely slept, but just as anyone else she also needed to rest. Starfleet hadn't replied yet; she calculated they would not do so in the next two hours. So she undressed, placed the carefully folded uniform in the closet and put on a night gown instead. She ordered the computer to wake her up in two hours and went to bed; she knew she did not need the alarm, since she would wake up on her own, but anyway preferred to be safe. As she had done several times before, she wondered if that action was indeed logical.

In the past, she would have had terrible nightmares after such an stressful experience as the one she just lived. However, she had gotten over many of her old insecurities long ago and she had mastered her Vulcan disciplines with the help of Spock. No dreams came to disturb her sleep that time, no images of Hellguard, of Ajeya or Koval tormented her.

Starfleet replied sooner than Saavik expected, but she was ready anyway. She received a call from them and they talked about the last incidents, about Koval and about Sloan and the consequences their actions had for the Federation and Starfleet. Of course, there was never a mention to Hellguard or her personal relations with the Romulan officers; she never told that part. They talked about the Jem'Hadar and the only course of action they could actually take.

Saavik's contact with the Dominion was a Vorta called Gelnaan. He had been assigned by the Founders to deal with the Alpha Quadrant's powers after the end of the war which caused the death of the last Weyoun, the one Vorta the Federation had usually dealed with. As most of his kind, Gelnaan could be deceptively affable and mild-mannered, but Saavik was never fooled. Several times, if pressed, he had expressed the Dominion's will to retake their former position in the Gamma Quadrant; it was just a matter of time, he softly commented, and patience was a virtue both the genetically engineered Vortas and their masters possessed, thanks to their nature.

First and his soldiers wanted to announce the singularities of their persons themselves, once in the Dominion and with other Jem'Hadar as audience, so when Saavik contacted Weyoun in the bridge, she did not say a word about their lack of adition to the white or their freedom plans.

Gelnaan dedicated Saavik and her officers an affected smile, thanking them in behalf of the Founders for the return of the Jem'Hadar, and turned to First and Second, who stood sternly by Saavik's side. He broadened his smile, still unsincere, and spoke to them, "The Founders welcome their stranded children home. We will send a ship for you immediately."
