The main concept of the Prologue and the first three chapters of the main Adaptability story apply to this one. With this chapter happening in the middle of chapter four.
Midoriya panted as he exploded yet another robot with an explosion from his hands before wiping a bit of sweat from his forehead. He knew the entrance exam for UA wasn't going to be easy, but he felt like he was prepared for the challenge.
His quirk was always a bit of a mystery to him when he had copied Bakugo's quirk for the first time at the age of four. He was sweating What he recalled from the doctor visit when he was four was usually a time limit to how long a quirk can be copied, yet Midoriya didn't seem to have one. And he hadn't tried to copy any other quirks due to the warnings of the doctor and the drastic effects it had on him when he was four.
All Might saw something in him when he rushed in to help Bakugo, and offered him to inherit his quirk, One for All, once he got to understand how his own quirk worked. He helped him train up his body by cleaning up Dago beach, even forcing Midoriya to take a break when the teen was pushing himself to the absolute limit.
(In the Teacher's Watch Tower)
Meanwhile, a small rodent-like creature in a neat uniform sat in an office chair with various pro heroes watching the exam take place through various monitors.
"My, what wonderful candidates we have this year! Demonstrating their quirks in such unique ways!"
The screen flips through various candidates such as a tall teen in a mask using multiple arms with eyes and ears to scout the nearest robot, along with a person with a blackbird head and a shadow being emerging from his stomach attacking a robot. The monitors keep switching until it lands on Bakugo and Midoriya. With a panting Bakugo having a feral grin surrounded by scorched and shattered robots, while Midoriya is in a similar position, but is panting with a tired smile on his face. This catches the eyes of the intelligent rodent.
"Oh? Similar damage done to the robots and physical state of exhaustion? Do they have the same quirks?"
He didn't have a chance to look at any of the candidate's entries but skimmed through them whenever he got the chance. He quickly went through the files that were sent there and until he found the same green-haired boy he was looking for. What he found made him chuckle lowly, then slowly grew into full-blown maniacal laughter that made some of the heroes there nervous.
"Oh my, Hahaha, what an extraordinary quirk Izuku Midoriya! Truly marvelous!"
The other teachers were confused with the statement, while All Might grew quite nervous about what the rodent might be thinking. The rodent then continued reading.
"Izuku Midoriya, Quirk: Quirk Mimicry. Able to copy a quirk after a serious drawback is first initiated before using it again." He then turned to his coworkers, "Ladies and gentlemen, for the first time in UA history, we may have two copy quirks in UA's program!" He then switched the monitor to another candidate named Neito Monoma, who he saw earlier in the files while looking for Midoriya. While Monoma was using a minimum of switching between three quirks to battle robots, Midoriya only used one.
"Why do you limit yourself to one quirk young man? I bet you have a bit more to your story…".
Meanwhile, the hero known as Vlad King was looking between the two contestants in deep thought, trying to find similarities and differences between the two.
Then with a sinister grin growing on the principal that sent shivers to the rest of his colleagues, the rodent made his way over to a red button located on his desk. "Either way, let's hope the contestants can handle this small obstacle."
Midoriya thrusts his hands forward to blow away another robot with explosions as he starts to wind down. He could keep going, but his hands are starting to cramp and fewer robots were appearing now. He lost track of the number of points he gained but figured he was around the 40 range. He suddenly stumbled as the ground and building around him started to shake, revealing a giant green robot that was taller than any of the mock buildings in the area. With it moving towards the examiners at a slow, but terrifying pace.
Just what was UA's budget?
The others were quick to run away from the danger that was heading towards them, including Midoriya, until he heard a yelp from behind him.
Turning around, he saw the same girl who had helped him from falling by making him float at the entrance of the school trapped under a large piece of rubble. So without hesitation, he turned his body around and charged straight towards the gigantic robot.
Kendo thought she was prepared for the UA entrance exam. She had trained her quirk as best she could so that she could destroy as many robots as she could even when her hands started to sting a bit. She also trained a bit in martial arts, knowing that combat would be beneficial to her goal of becoming a pro hero one day. She wasn't expecting a giant robot to start stomping his way towards her along with the group of students.
She also wasn't expecting for a green-haired kid to charge their way towards the metal behemoth, thrusting his arms backward to launch himself up towards the robot's face before throwing his palms forward and shouting, "DIEEEE!"
Wincing slightly at the bright light, she shut her eyes briefly before opening them to see that the robot's face was blown right off, with scorched marks on the areas of the head not obliterated by a massive explosion. Making the mechanical monster halt in its tracks since its computing system was damaged.
She didn't get a moment to breathe a sigh of relief as she saw the green-haired teen start to plummet to the ground with locked tense arms in front of him. Why was he not slowing his descent? Could he no longer move his arms anymore? She bit her lip as she watched the boy continue to fall with no sign of stopping, wondering if he was going to pull a last-minute attempt to save himself.
Later, she would question where this desire came from, where this sudden action of rushing forward to save this stranger came from, but whatever the reason, just started to move. Running towards him at full speed trying to reach underneath him as fast as she could before he became a stain on the floor.
She opened and the palms of her hands in front of her before she enlarged them to catch the falling green-haired boy, who landed neatly between the two giant hands.
"Thanks...", she heard the green-haired boy she caught groaned, "I pushed myself too far and couldn't release another blast."
"Hey... You're ok..."
The two turned to see a brown-haired girl with a permanent blush on her cheeks as he fumbled her way off the piece of machinery that she was on.
"I could be saying the same thing about you.", the boy in her hands said.
Kendo could only look between the two in slight confusion. Did they know each other? She didn't get to answer as the girl on the robot suddenly started to vomit rainbows towards the side, startling the two. And hurriedly made a path for Recovery Girl to check up on the girl.
Kendo looked off to the side to take a glance at the boy that she saved, "You know, that was pretty reckless. Going so far without a plan in mind."
The boy next to her had the decency to look a bit embarrassed as he rubbed the back of his head sheepishly.
"Yeah... But I wasn't thinking about a plan, I just saw that she needed help and I rushed in."
Kendo was about to answer back something when she paused to think about it. Didn't she pretty much do the same thing when she saw that he was falling as well? She didn't really have a plan in mind when she rushed in either, she just moved.
"Well... I'm glad that it all worked out in the end."
After a moment of hesitation, she struck out her hand towards the green-haired teen for a handshake as she decided to introduce herself to the boy that she had to save.
"Itsuka Kendo, UA contestant."
She saw that he glanced at her hand with slight hesitation as well before he stuck out a hand as well to meet her own.
"Izuka Midoriya, UA contestant as well."
They both shared a smile before they heard the announcement to head back towards the buses, with them chatting to each other about their experience of the exam. All while Uraraka was being checked on by the Hero nurse.
The two were making their way back to their station, with them sharing about their quirks right before they were about to depart.
"Wow. So that quirk is not even yours to begin with?"
All Midoriya can do is rub the back of his head and chuckle sheepishly as he answered. "Yeah, it was from a person who I knew for a long time. I can copy quirks, but I kind of have to feel their drawbacks before I can use them." He went on to describe how he was able to copy this quirk, how it affected his body as a kid and was now able to do it since he was older.
Kendo was a bit impressed, knowing that the boy in front of him went so far with another person's quirk to try to become a hero. She considered something for a while after that, ruining the peaceful atmosphere that the two were found in.
"Well, I think it's safe to say that we both did pretty well in the exam, don't you?"
Midoriya was a bit confused about where she was going with this but nodded nonetheless for her to continue.
"So I was thinking, and this is totally up to you by the way, that you should copy my quirk now that we are in UA. It would be better if you had something else to work with don't you think?"
This led Midoriya to put a halt in their walk as he turns to her with a wide-eyed expression. To be honest, he didn't have a plan when it came to copying a person's quirk. If they were permanent, it would be like stealing their quirks from them. Even if he didn't permanently gain their quirk, he would be given access to a person's ability that they were born with. He didn't want to just use people to gain new abilities. It felt so… violating.
The green-haired copier could only look towards her in shock, as they neared their stop before they made their separate ways. "Are… are you sure? I don't want to just use you for quirk."
She just waved off his worries, "It's fine, if you want, we can trade phone numbers so we can talk if we somehow don't pass the exams. Plus...", a smirk grew on her face, "I could always use a sparring partner."
Midoriya couldn't help but shiver at the idea, already knowing what her quirk is and the way she used them to crush thick sheets of metal during the exam. Yet, he was also curious about how this quirk will impact his body and if he would be able to copy it.
"If you are ok with it, then I accept."
He already explained how it works so all that was needed was the contact. Admittedly he was kind of nervous about this part, but both settled it with a firm handshake. A promise to not lose touch with each other no matter where they ended up. With that out of the way, they both went their separate ways, hoping to meet each other again.
On the way home, he could feel his hands start to ache as the quirk started to take effect in his body. With that in mind, he rushed the rest of the way home to reduce any symptoms he may cause to others.
(In the Teacher's Watch Tower)
Back with the heroes, there were finalizing their lists on what students would enter the hero course and what classes would they be in. They were about halfway done when Vlad king stumbled upon two students with their files.
One was Midoriya Izuku, a green-haired kid with the quirk: Quirk Mimicry. It seemed to be a copy-based quirk that allowed him to use a quirk, but only after going through the drawbacks of the quirk. Throughout the robot part of the exam, he seemed to only be using one quirk to destroy the robots around him.
On the other hand, Neito Monoma was another boy with the quirk: Copy. It seemed to function the same as Midoriya's, yet it was instantaneous and didn't seem to have a drawback as far as the blood-based hero could tell.
Vlad watched the two thoroughly throughout the exam, knowing that one of them was most likely going to be in his class since it wasn't very beneficial to have two people with the same quirks in a classroom. He found that despite having similar powers, the two were very different people.
Monoma seemed to carry around an arrogant sneer around him as he tried to copy whatever quirk was around him to destroy as many robots as possible. It was crafty to see him use various quirks in the limited amount of time that was available, and he knew that he would do great in the hero course.
Midoriya on the other hand only used one quirk throughout the entire test: Explosion. Yet, when he saw the look on his face compared to the person who originally had the power, he found a determined expression on his face as he continued to mow down any robots that stood in his way. Very different from the crazed look on Bakugo, the original user of the explosion quirk.
What he was looking at was the personality of two different people with similar powers. One who tried to get ahead in this world by using whatever advantage they had around them, and one who stopped at nothing to do the right thing no matter the cost.
"Now, about the two copy-based children with quirks. I think Midoriya should go to me in Class 1-A, and Monoma should go to Vlad in Class 1-B.", the underground hero drowsily explained to the rest of the teachers, "If the stunt he pulled with the Zero Pointer was anything to go by, any objections?"
Vlad considered letting Midoriya go to Aizawa, as he was known to normally have the 'Problem Children' as he liked to put it. Yet, looking at the two files he had on hand, he couldn't help but feel like there was something more to this Midoriya kid than what was seen. Someone with a copy-based quirk should be able to use more than one right? So why was he hiding back so much?
"If I may, I feel like Midoriya would do better in my class than in yours Aizawa."
The underground hero raised an eyebrow at the sudden addition, not sure why the blood-based hero suddenly wanted to have a student who didn't show restraint in throwing himself at a robot the size of a skyscraper. Vlad noticed that All Might was suddenly more attentive than he was the past few discussions, and Nezu stirred his tea with a sudden twinkle in his beady eyes.
"Are you sure you want that Vlad? You did see how he just ran towards the robot palms blazing, didn't you?"
"I know, but the more that I look at the two's quirks, the more I feel like he would do better with mine. My class usually has the more technique-based quirks, and seeing that Midoriya only can copy quirks after going through the drawbacks, I feel like I would be a better teacher for him. Compared to your erasure drawback and my blood one, I feel like it would be a better option."
The room was silent for a moment, considering Vlad's points of the person who managed to blow off the head of the Zero pointer.
"Alright fine.", the underground relented as they finally made the decision, "Midoriya will go to Class 1-B and Monoma will be with me in Class 1-A. Any objections?"
The room remained silent, letting the Erasure hero finally move on from this topic while Vlad looked down at Midoriya's folder again. Wondering how this year will turn out for the kid he reached out to.
So the main thing about Class B that I find interesting is how supportive they are with each other. If you go through the anime and take out Midoriya from his Class you see a lot of issues with Class A that don't get resolved. Like Todoroki and Iida. So it will be fun trying to see how this turns out.
