Trouble with Cultures
Lauren's P.O.V.:
Ah, there is nothing like a normal Tuesday in Brooklyn after school I would say besides the warm spring weather starting to come in full bloom if I may so admit. Sean and I were outside in the park working on the dance moves for the end of year flash mob coming up but more importantly traditional dance steps for the Irish and Scottish cultures for our school's culture fair coming up in a few weeks. I was excited to do this for school because I have been interested in all the world cultures when I was little. I wanted to do Italy at first because it was part of my heritage in all honesty; yet someone took it. However, I decided to do Ireland because I used to take Irish step dance classes a little bit when I was young. I learned from Sean on his dad's side of the family, he is Scottish, so I figured it would be perfect for the two of us to merge our cultures together. Thanks to that idea, our teacher in Social Studies gave us permission to merge our choice of cultures together since it would be awesome and amazing at the same time.
"How's your end going Lauren," Sean asked me. "Doing well," I said managing a few good Irish step dance moves that I remembered growing up. Oh, I must mention the project we are doing counts for 50% of our total grade at the end of the year, so Sean and I wanted to make this count. Sean is happy that the two of us are doing the project together; however, he is not happy wearing the thing he does not like. Yep, a kilt. I am telling you when he heard the news, he had to wear something relatable to his culture, he was not happy. He told me that him plus wearing a kilt equals haunt him till the day he dies. Then, to top it all off, worried all of our friends will laugh at him for it, but I told him worry until you have to.
"How are the moves going Lauren," Sean asked as I focused. "Doing good Sean, how about yours," I asked over my music. "Doing well," he responded. I was doing Irish dance moves from my recital which was titled, "Ladies of the Celtic Court" and I still remembered my dance moves from back in the day and it was so much fun. It felt neat getting back into my Irish step dance moves that I did back in 5th grade. I still could not believe that I remember them and I'm good with memory, just saying. Anyway, I continued to do a few dance moves while Sean focused on the Scottish jig since we were merging the cultures together if you will.
"Hey Lauren," Sean called to me. "What's up buddy," I asked turning off my headphones and music. "The jig dance move is that toe heel toe," he wondered. "I think that's the one," I shrugged. "Yeah could be," Sean admitted. "True. Hey, let's head back to the apartment and see if Hector knows. I have a feeling he might call," I suggested to my buddy. "Good idea," he agreed as we walked back to the apartment complex that he and I were both living in. "So, has Jess heard word about that contest yet," he asked as we entered and walked to the mailboxes. "Not yet. She's been looking forward to the Junior Ambassador contest for Skeleci all week and I don't want to get her hopes down if she loses," I told Sean as I got the mail from the P.O. Box and hidden within the mail was an envelope with the Sleckian seal on the back. "I think it might be today," I smiled as we walked up the steps to the apartment and over to mine where Jess and Hector were slumping and honestly sleeping.
Sean's P.O.V.:
Lauren and I walked over to where Jess and Hector were as they were sound asleep. "Jess, wake up," she said nudging her sister. "Five more minuets Lauren," she moaned. "Okay. Sleep all you want sis," Lauren told her before looking at me. "You're going to do it," I whispered. "Oh yeah," she smirked before clearing her throat. Guess, I must cover the ears. "JESS, HECTOR WAKE UP MAIL CALL," Lauren yelled almost into Jess's ear and that got the two up. "Lauren, I thought we told you not to do the wakeup call," Hector groaned. "Sorry, you guys were fast asleep it looked like and I had to wake you up," Lauren told them. "Yeah it was either that or the two of us getting the cold water buckets," I added. "You wouldn't," Jess growled a little.
"Oh we would but I gave Sean slack just this once," she answered. "Oh that's good news," Hector relieved. "So, mail call," Jess inquired. "Mail call and I believe something you've been waiting for is in the mail today," Lauren smiled as Jess went over to the mail that she placed on the kitchen table. "By the way, what were you and Hector," I asked. "He begged me to watch Beetlejuice," Jess replied. "Ah," I nodded. "Okay. Not me, not me. Oh my gosh. It's here. Hector it came," she squealed to us. "What came," Hector asked unsure and still a little sleepy.
Lauren's P.O.V.:
"Oh shake the cobwebs off Hector. Jess got something from Chrissy EJ Mandarin today," Sean told him. "Chrissy? As in the Skelecian Ambassador Chrissy," Hector asked. "That's her. Remember that essay contest I heard about at school," Jess answered. "Oh, the one for the opportunity to be the Junior Ambassador for Earth to the planet Skelci," Hector realized. "That one and I think today is the day I find out," Jess smiled. "Hey, you never know sis. By the way what did you write your essay on," I asked. "Yeah you kept it hush, hush from all of us," Sean piped in. "Oh. I wrote about how much I like the Skelcian culture," Jess told us. "Really? So you wrote how they treat one another, their behavior, holidays, etc.," Hector asked. "Yep and love the culture I do," Jess grinned. "Well don't just stand there sis, open the letter," I told her with a smile.
"Okay, okay. Guess you and Hector had another Frosted Flakes fight again," Jess muttered. "Hey. He owned me this one," I defended myself.
Jess's P.O.V.:
I soon cleared my throat and opened the envelope to see the letter. "To Ms. Jessica Marie Ruiz, my fellow Sleckians and I have received your essay about the Skelecian culture and are impressed with the hard work you have placed in this essay. Knowing this contest was open to your neighborhood, we had to keep in mind other contestants; still yours stood out to all the ones received. Therefore, as ambassador of the Planet Skeleci to Earth with my fellow colleagues, it is my pleasure to inform you that after careful discussion, you Jessica Marie Ruiz are the winner of the essay contest and hear by invited to become the first Junior Ambassador of planet Earth to the Skelecians. You should be very proud of your hard work and will be named ambassador at a party in your honor on Friday March 12, 2010 at 3o'clock at the Skelecian embassy here in Brooklyn. We are very proud of you and congratulations on the win. Signed by Chrissy, Ethan Jane Mandarin, ambassador of the planet Skeleci to Earth," I read to my family and friend. I could not believe this was happening and honestly after two whole seconds, I began to freak out.
Lauren's P.O.V.:
Hector, Sean and I began to freak out after she read the letter and I could not help but hug my sister along with Hector. "Jess, you did it," I cheered. "Way to go little sis," Hector grinned hugging her. "I'm still stunned," she told us. "Well the saying goes, hard work pays off and you deserve it Jess," Sean agreed in a big hug with us. "Thanks guys. I still can't believe it," Jess said stunned at the news just as we were. "Believe me, us too. We didn't expect this," I told my sister. "Hey, can I see the letter," Hector asked. "Sure," Jess told him handing the letter over. "Wow Jess, I must admit I am impressed that this honor is given to you. I know we have to frame it," Hector smiled. "We do," Jess grinned. "Uh hate to burst the bubble but Chrissy wrote on here that Jess has to prepare a speech," I said noticing the writing at the end of letter with a PS if you will.
"A speech," Jess asked. "Yeah. Didn't you sign up for public speaking this semester," Sean asked. "No. I thought you guys did," Jess answered confused. "No. I guess the teachers have not been teaching it in Language Arts lately, hopefully they do it this week," I told them. "Yeah and more importantly, they would like part of the speech to be in the Skelecian language," Sean added in. "Okay, well the good news I can learn some Skelecian by Friday so it can work, I think," Jess replied panicking a little. "Uh Lauren, you think she's," Sean asked. "Yeah she's having a," I started to say. "HEY YOU GUYS," she yelled. "Panic attack," Hector, Sean and I said together as we went over to the diner.
(At the diner)
Leo's P.O.V.:
"Uncle Leo, is there a reason why we have to go back to Chicago? I mean they could have just sent the will here for us to sign and we wouldn't have to go on the trip," PJ asked me. "I know PJ but your great uncle Phil may not have a lot of time left due to his current situation and we have to be prepared in case he does," I told PJ. "Okay dad but what about, oh never mind," Keith muttered. "What champ," I asked. "Jess is supposed to be hearing word about a contest today so couldn't we wait till after," Keith wondered. "I know Keith but whose more important right now," I asked him. "Uncle Phil," Keith and PJ replied.
"That's correct champ," I told him as Jess, Hector, Lauren and Sean walked through the door with Lisa and Mario trailing behind. "Yo, yo party people," Hector greeted. "Hey Hector," I told him. "Hey Leo," the others greeted. "So what's the gang call for," PJ asked. "Guess whose being named the first Junior Ambassador of Earth to the Planet Skeleci," Jess asked holding the letter. "You heard from the contest," Keith asked. "Uh huh. I won," she grinned as the others went around her with hugs and cheers. "Ah. Jess that's awesome," Lisa told her best friend. "Yeah. Congrats girl," I said to Jess with a smile. "Thanks guys. I'm telling you I can't believe I won this is going to be great," Jess said before a panicked look came on her face.
Lauren's P.O.V.:
"Oh. I do not know how to speak Skeclian. Am I going to insult them, oh what am I going to do? A lot of pressure," Jess said pacing the diner. "What's wrong with Jess," Leo, Keith, PJ, Lisa and Shock asked Hector, Sean and I. "She's having a panic attack about this," Hector told them. "She's excited and all but she has to write a speech and part of it needs to include Skelecian language," Sean added afterwards. "Huh. I guess pressure's on," PJ realized. "Yeah and also Sean, you forgot to mention one little detail," I told him. "What's that," he asked. "She needs it in by Friday for the ceremony," I answered. "Friday," everyone asked stunned. "I know. So, she is going to need all the help she can get," I told the gang. "Hmm. But don't you know how to speak Slekleci Hector," Lisa asked. "Not really. What about you Lisa? I know your close friends with Lottie," he replied. "Well, she's back home on the planet for now and won't be coming in for the ceremony so honestly I'm stuck," Lisa answered and we all looked to see Jess still panicking about this. "Okay Jess calm down. No need to panic," I told my sister. "I have every right to panic," she snapped. "Jess," Hector scolded. "I'm sorry Hector. You too Lauren. I'm just nervous about this," she apologized. "Were going to need backup Lauren," Sean told me. "Yeah and I think we both know the person who can help us out," I said pulling out my cell phone and dialing a number. "Who are you calling," Keith asked.
"You'll see," I said before I heard someone pick up. "Hey girl, come quick. We got a speech to write and needs Skelecian translating," I told the person before hanging up. "Now who did you call Lauren," Hector asked. "Wait for it," Sean said as someone with curly hair came right into the diner wearing colorful patterns. Yep, it was our friend Janet Kinglakeforsure of Skelecki. "You rang," she asked with a smile. "Hey Janet, thanks for coming," Sean greeted her. "No problem Sean. So, who needs speech help," she asked walking into the diner.
"We'll give you one guess who," Hector said pointing to Jess who was still panicking. "Jess," Janet squealed and went over to her. "Janet, what are you doing here," she asked. "Lauren called. Figured you would need help writing the speech. I still can't believe you won," she smiled. "Laur, you didn't have to do that," Jess smiled. "Well, I choose to help my sister and that's what I do," I grinned. "Thanks," Jess smiled. "Okay, let's write that speech," Janet told her as they got right to work. "So, I think this is going to be perfect Lauren," Hector noticed. "Sure is and you guys do know friends are invited right," I asked. "Oh yeah we know," Mario and Shock answered. "We do but we won't be there," Leo told us. "How come," Hector asked.
"My great Uncle Phil is near the end of a cancer battle so, we have to go to Chicago just in case and sign the will," Leo explained. "Ah," we realized. "Yeah so that's why but were proud of Jess," Keith grinned. "Yep. Come on guys, let's let the two work," I told them as we walked out of the diner letting Jess and Janet work.
(3 days later)
Hector's P.O.V.:
Three days have gone by since Jess got the letter and today had arrived! Yep, Jess's ceremony is today, and I could not be more excited! I picked up Lauren and Sean from school a little early so that they have some time to change into more "suitable" outfits for the embassy. I insisted we wear black to the event, but Lauren was like no way. She thought we were going to a funeral, but I just shrugged it off.
We were at the diner listening to Jess finish her speech she and Janet worked on as I adjusted my black tie with my blue Oxford crisp shirt on underneath my gray blazer that matched my shoes as well and of course my slacks that I had pressed and ready. Thanks mom. Anyway, Sean was wearing a spring like version of his Thanksgiving look and Lauren wore a mint green lace skater dress with detachable belt, purple star like cardigan, teal flats and her necklaces along with ring. Her hair was done in the same style as Lucy from Narnia in the Prince Caspian film. I think she loves that style. "In conclusion of this opportunity I would not only like to thank the embassy and the planet Skeleci for this honor but leave you with this baranga shink farinka fanfootee babookie. Thank you once again and good night," Jess read from the paper she had in her hands as we listened. Keith, PJ and Leo were joining over FaceTime.
"Jess that was awesome," Janet said to her while Lisa, Lauren, Sean and I applauded. "Thanks Janet, and you too guys honestly you deserve some credit," Jess smiled as she sat back down. "Well, all of it was on you sis. You wrote the speech and Janet helped by translating so in a way you honestly did the whole thing by yourself," I told my sister. "True that Hector," Lauren agreed. "Here, here to that brother," Sean smiled. "Agreed," Keith, Leo and PJ added. "Yeah I guess your right Hector but somehow you contributed guys, and I can't be more grateful," Jess told us.
Lauren's P.O.V.:
"Well, what are siblings and friends for Jess," PJ smiled. "Yeah. Your right PJ," she smiled. "I know I am," he smiled. "Yeah he is," we added with a smile. "Your going to do great Jess, I've seen you do your presentation for Project Adventure and you are going to nail it," Keith grinned to Jess. "Oh thanks Keith. I really wish you guys were here," Jess told the three. "We wish we were too; but honestly family comes before friends," Leo told us."That's right for sure," Hector agreed. "Yeah I was going to mention this but kudos to you Janet for speaking both Skelecian and English. I have to admit, that's helpful," Sean added in. "Yeah I know. I just love translating a lot," she smiled. "That you do," Lisa told her. I soon looked at the clock. "Hey it's 2:25 guys. We got to roll if we want to be at the embassy for 3,' I told them. "Lauren's right we better get going," Hector said getting up.
"Oh hold on guys, I forgot to mention something when we go to the embassy today," Janet told us. "What is it," Hector wondered. "A lot of customs that we have are different you guys. The big one I must mention is the way we applaud," she told us.
"Really applauding? I thought you guys, you know would clap," Sean said demonstrating. "We do Sean; but it's different in our culture," she replied. "Can you show us," I asked. "Of course," she said before demonstrating two snaps and a clap. "Okay, I think we can handle it guys," Hector said as he tried it. Sean and I got the hang of it so did Lisa, Keith PJ and Leo. "I like it," Shock cheered coming by with drinks. "Hey Shock," I greeted. "Hey Lauren. You nervous Jess," Shock asked. "A little but I know I can do it," she replied. "That's the spirit girl. You'll do great," he told her. "Thanks," she smiled.
"How's the diner holding Shock," Leo asked. "Holding down steady Leo. It should be ready for you guys by the time you get back," he told him. "I was going to ask when do you guys get back from Chicago," I wondered. "We'll be back by what is it dad Monday, I think," Keith asked. "I think Monday," Leo told us. "Okay then, Monday it is," I smiled. "Alright. I'll do my best to hold down the fort until Monday," Shock said walking back with the dishes. "Shock, you sure you don't need Sean and I to stay and help," I asked. "I'll be fine Lauren. Trust me, I got this," he answered going back into the kitchen. "Okay, if you say so," I shrugged. "Good luck dude," Hector told him as he went back. "You think he'll need it," Sean asked. "Wait for it," I answered. Nothing happened.
Hector's P.O.V.:
"Well, I guess he has it," I admitted before we all heard a cat screeching, Shock screaming and dishes breaking while wincing as it happened. "Then again, you stand corrected," Lisa asked me. "Yeah," I replied honestly. "Shock are you okay," Lauren asked going to the door of the back. "You alright dude," Sean asked as well. "Need help guys. Call Mario. I think I twisted or sprained my ankle," Shock groaned in pain. "I'll call Mario," I said dialing his number. "Hello," Mario answered. "Hey man, it's Hector. Listen, I need you at the diner. Shock might need to go to the hospital. I think he twisted or sprained his ankle," I told Mario. "Which one," he asked. "Don't know," I replied. "Keep him comfortable. I'm on my way," Mario told him before he and Hector hung up. "I guess on that note, Sean and I are staying here to help Shock out. Sorry sis," Lauren announced.
"Don't apologize Lauren. You have to help him; but how is the question," Jess asked. "Yeah you two are dressed for the embassy," I said confused. "Not for long Hector. We'll be right back," Lauren told me in a sing song fashion before she and Sean ran out the door of the diner and back into casual clothing.
Lauren's P.O.V.:
"Ta da," we both said in unison. "What on Skeleci was that," Janet asked surprised. "Quick changes. Works every time," Sean smiled. "And helpful in situations such as this," I added with a smile. "Okay, one of you guys please teach me when this is over," Janet said stunned. "Deal," Sean told her with a smile. "Okay, with everything said and done on that. It's nearly three so we got to go," Hector told the crew before getting his jacket as Jess still sat on her chair. "Jess you okay," I asked my sister. "No. I'm still a little nervous about speaking Skelecian. I don't want to bomb it," she admitted. "Don't worry sis. You'll be great. Trust me, you'll do fantastic," Hector cheered for her. "And not to mention, the paper will be right with you Jess and just read it. Don't commit to memory," Leo advised her. "Thanks guys," she smiled.
"Your welcome. Honestly, if I known better Jess, you are a native Skelecian," Janet smiled. "Ah. Thanks Janet," she smiled. "No problem," she shrugged. "Come on Jess don't forget the speech we got to go," Hector told her before we felt an earthquake like vibration. "Woah, anyone felt that," I asked confused. "Yeah I felt it for sure," the others agreed. "What was it," Lisa asked. "I don't know Lisa. We weren't supposed to be getting an earthquake today," Sean shrugged. "Yeah so, we'll figure it out while you guys are at the embassy. You can do it Jess," I told my sister. "Thanks Lauren and you are right. I am Jessica Ruiz, and I can do this," she replied confidently. "Yeah that's our sister," Hector cheered. "Have fun guys," I called to them as they left the diner.
"That's right Jess, read the speech, then you'll insult them and soon they will make me Junior Ambassador. Oh this is going to perfect, "a voice sounded happily but a little evil. I turned to see who spoke those words and saw Annie who honestly looked really well dressed. "Annie," I asked surprised. "Oh hi Lauren, hey Sean, guys. You startled me," she replied flabbergasted. "Uh did we just hear you say Jess is going to insult the Skelecians," Sean asked. "And if she did that, you would be named Junior Ambassador," I wondered. "And why do you have the Skeclian translation dictionaries with you," PJ quizzed. "Uh No I don't think so. But did I have those? I meant she'll do great. Yeah, she'll do great. I was doing research you know in case something goes wrong," she denied before throwing the books to the side.
"Okay," Keith said confused as he, PJ and Leo agreed with suspicion. "Well if you think that way, fine with us. By the way, nice dress," I said surprised. "You like? Perfect colors for me. Dusty colors has been my strong suit," she grinned before looking at the clock. "Oh would you look at the time, I got to go. Don't want to be late for the ceremony bye," she said before heading out the door. "Hmm, is it just me or is there something fishy going on," Sean asked us. "Something fishy," we answered before the door to the diner opened and Mario came in.
Sean's P.O.V.:
"Hey I'm here where's Shock," he asked. "He's in the back," I told Mario as we walked back into the kitchen where he was still in pain but hugging the ankle. "Shock you still okay," Lauren asked. "I'm fine and not really Lauren. It's just that it hurts," he replied. "Alright dude. Look, Mario's here and will get you to the hospital. Lauren and I will help you get in the car," I told Shock. "Okay. Sean you get one shoulder of Shock, Mario you get the other. I'll get the door," Lauren delegated.
"Alright Lauren," we told her as we got Shock off the ground and over to Mario's car while stepping slowly but opening the door as we got Shock in. Mario got around the other side of the car after helping. "Alright, I'll update you guys once we were at the hospital," Mario told us. "Perfect. Thanks dude we'll see you in a bit," we told him as they went off towards the hospital.
Lauren's P.O.V:
"Okay, now with that we got to make food," I told Sean. "But how? You and I know how to make your brother's French toast and we've only been taking wait a second," Sean started to say. "You realizing," I asked. "Keith, Leo, PJ. Drop Lauren and I some knowledge. Were going to make some food," Sean smirked as we went back inside the diner into the kitchen to get stated. "Hey Sean," Leo told him. "What's up," he asked looking at the Ipad. "Have Lauren, take care of the drinks. I'll help you with the food," he advised. "On it," Sean agreed and went back to the kitchen while I was at the front taking orders and working on the drinks. I hope Jess is doing alright. She did seem nervous and Annie did say something that sounded fishy. Maybe I should tell her.
(At the embassy)
Jess' P.O.V.:
I couldn't believe I was standing in the Skecleckian embassy about to give my speech pretty soon. This is crazy. I wish I could explain in detail everything but that would take forever. Anyway, Hector, Janet, Lisa and I were near the podium where I would give my speech while I looked around as everyone chatted but still I felt nervous about this. I looked around at the decorations and the pictures lining some of the walls of the room trying to get my mind off of the worries building in my stomach. "You alright sis," Hector noticed seeing me worried.
"No. I'm still scared," I admitted. "I know. It's a little daunting to do this but like Lauren said, you'll do great," he told me. "You know that," I asked. "Of course," he answered before hearing his phone vibrate. "It's Lauren," he told me. "Oh what does she say," Lisa asked coming over. "She said Shock is at the hospital with Mario and keep an eye on the speech. Sean and I think Annie might have changed it," he read to us. "Huh," we said confused. "What did she mean by that," Lisa asked. "I don't know but you okay Jess," Janet asked. "Excited and nervous," I admitted before hearing piano music as I walked towards the center of the room.
Jess singing
I can't believe that this is happening.
And I worked hard every day with all I wrote and did not say.
Here on the edge of my abyss. Knowing soon I'll be ambassador; it's led to this.
Yet still, I pull inside myself, close the wall put up my guard. I practiced every single day till now but why is it so hard?
Breathes
I'm just so excited, and honestly it seems, there are things still happening, it's not dangerous to dream.
"Jess you ready," Hector asked getting me out of my thoughts. "Oh ready," I told him as a slide whistle was heard across the hall. We turned to see a person who did the whistle with a smile and stepped to the side to reveal a woman, that must be Chrissy, I thought as she came into the entrance. She wore a black shirt and pants along with Skelecian ambassador sash with it's bright colors and hidden in the shirt was her necklace. People soon applauded as she came into the room. "Good afternoon, everyone. I'm Chrissy Ethan Jane Mandarin, the ambassador of Skeleci to Earth," she introduced walking in as everyone nodded while I gave a small curtsy and so did Janet, and Lisa as she walked to the podium.
Annie's P.O.V.:
"Thank you all so much. Thank you, on behalf of my colleagues and all ambassadors of the planet Skeleci, I like to welcome all of you to the embassy and more importantly on this very special day. You see, when I first became ambassador, I never knew one day in the future we would have a Junior Ambassador be named among the many ranks. We felt honored by the many essays written by our friends here on Earth," Chrissy was saying as I stood at Jess watching her smile. Oh, if they only knew I was supposed to win, not her.
(Annie singing)
I know I'll never see that sunny day, when this thing is finally through, and it could just be over to.
I know I can't dwell, on this loss now, yet I went for drastic measure and it will come at such a cost.
I wish they could know the truth. Show them, who is meant to win.
I wish they knew that all this pantomime and pageantry was for me.
They chose her because she cautious, and I'm just extreme. We are different she and I. And it's dangerous to dream.
(J)
It's not dangerous to wish, I'll be an example for little girls.
(A)
Dangerous to even take a risk.
(J)
This is my chance I've waited long, and here I am to see.
(A)
If I exposed the truth, who knows how dangerous I'd be?
Jess's P.O.V.:
"As we stand here in this room today, we are honored and privileged to recognize a young earthling, whose essay on our cultures and customs tugged at our strings, quite literally. And all of us here at the embassy agreed, she should be honored with appointment of the Junior Ambassador role in our ranks. So, I am honored and proud to announce the first Junior Ambassador of Earth to the Planet Skeleci to Miss Jessica Marie Ruiz. Jess will you come forward," Chrissy announced as people started to applaud as I began to walk forward to the podium.
Don't mess up Jess, don't make a mistake.
Don't even let your concentration break.
Okay, Here we go
I smiled as I walked to the podium and Chrissy who was smiling as the sash for Junior Ambassador was placed over my head. I couldn't believe this is happening. "Wow. Thank you, Your Excellency," I told her with a grin. I looked at the vast amount of people who were in the room and I was still a little nervous but I can do it, like Lauren said. I wonder how she's doing.
(At the diner)
Lauren's P.O.V.:
"Sean you getting the ceremony up? I don't want to miss Jess's moment," I told my friend as he was near the laptop getting connections sorted out. "I'm trying Lauren but I can't seem to find the link for the ceremony anywhere. It's like they don't want others to see it," Sean told me working the connections. Oh, I must mention we were busting our butts to get food out for people which went well. "Maybe they don't want others to see it," Leo suggested. "I don't know Leo. Either way, they should allow us to see it," I admitted just as my phone rang. "I got this. Hello," I answered. "Hey Lauren it's Mario, "Mario sounded on the other line. "Hey Mario, what's the update with Shock," I asked.
"I heard from the doctor that Shock did sprain his ankle," he announced to me. I winced at that. "Ouch, that has to hurt," I admitted. "Yeah they did X-rays and found it twisted in a sort of awkward way when he took the slip earlier. They were surprised it didn't get broken," Mario explained. "Lauren. Good news I got the ceremony," Sean told me yelling in my ear but I had to shush him since I was on the phone. "Who you talking to," PJ asked. "It's Mario. Hold on Mario, I'm putting you on speaker," I told him turning my phone to speaker. "Can you hear me," I asked. "Yep, I can hear you guys," he replied. "So what's up with Shock," Sean asked. "The doctor is saying Shock did sprain the ankle, good news is it didn't get broken," I summarized. "Oh that's good," the others breathed in relief.
"Yeah I was relieved to. Anyway, the doctor is putting an elastic bandage on Shock's left ankle now as we speak. So we should be heading back to the diner soon," Mario told us. "Any idea on recovery time," Keith asked. "According to the hospital, it can take up to 1 to 3 weeks for it to heal properly with the conditions needed so they are recommending Shock to do RICE," he answered. "RICE," we asked. "Yep. Stands for Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation," he answered. "Wow," I admitted. "Yeah. Oh, they also did mention for him not to put pressure on the ankle for 24 to 48 hours, so he'll be relying on us until he gets better," Mario told us. "Okay. We'll make sure to get everything set back here at the diner," Sean said as Jess came to the podium. "There's Jess. Quiet down guys," I told them.
"What are you guys watching," Mario wondered. "Jess's ambassador ceremony," Sean smiled. "Is that today," Mario asked. "Shush, here goes Jess," I told them as we crowded around the laptop.
(Back at the embassy)
Jess's P.O.V.:
"Your Excellency, members of the Skelecian embassy, guests, family, friends. I am delighted and honored to be standing in front of you all this afternoon accepting the position of Junior Ambassador. Wow, I must admit right now in front of you all I feel hingerbanderspink," I started to speak, and everyone soon started laughing afterwards but not at me but the joke. "The first time I heard of the word Skeleci, I never knew of the planet or the people that live in our own neighborhood. You see, I felt a little skeptic and nervoskatty about it; however when I met Janet is when I started to learn more about the culture and if it wasn't for her knowledge, I wouldn't be standing here today," I continued as everyone applauded at Janet.
(At the diner)
Sean's P.O.V.:
"You got to admit Lauren, she's doing great," I whispered to her as Jess continued speaking. "She is but I have a funny feeling Jess's speech might have been altered. After all she did confess it a little earlier," Lauren said suspiciously. "What do you mean," PJ asked. "Well, Annie was in the diner around the same time we were before the others left and she had the translation dictionaries and customs book with her," Lauren admitted. "You mean these guys," Mario said to us as he and Shock walked well more like hopped through the door holding the books. "Yeah, those are the ones," she realized. "Where did you find them," I asked. "Out in the back. Now come on, help me get Shock to a chair so he can rest his ankle," Mario told us.
"Oh right uh," Lauren and I soon got to work in getting a chair for Shock and raising the ankle while Mario placed an icepack on the ankle. "There we go buddy. How you feeling," Lauren asked. "Good. Thanks for helping me out guys," Shock smiled. "Don't mention it," Lauren smiled. I looked at the screen and saw Jess was near the end of the speech. "Moment of truth Lauren. She's at the conclusion," I announced. "Oh here we go," she admitted as we both crossed fingers hoping she won't notice the change. "Don't notice, don't notice," Keith whispered as we did the same.
Lauren's P.O.V.:
"In conclusion of this opportunity I would not only like to thank the embassy and the planet Skeleci for this honor but leave you with this. Grabank kingsha fartfanfooee," Jess read out loud and all of us looked at the screen. "WHAT," we all shouted. "Did she just say that," Leo asked stunned. "Yeah," we admitted. "Uh I meant to say baranga shink farinka fanfootee babookie," Jess said in hopes of doing things right but the Skelecians gasped and were not happy. Chrissy soon stripped Jess of her Ambassador Title and announced Annie would have it. Jess looked so upset on screen and I could tell. She worked so hard and I saw her run out of the room in sadness.
(At the embassy)
Annie's P.O.V.:
I gasped with the rest of the crowd but smiled in glee as I walked to the podium proudly as the sash was placed on me. Jess looked at me and I smirked at her then did a sly wave. Jess's face soon twisted into sadness and then she ran out of the room. I can't believe it! My plan worked! Everyone looked at me. "I am so, so sorry you had to see that but I am beyond honored barangay shink to take on this opportunity as your new Junior Ambassador," I smiled to the crowd and they applauded. I knew this would work in the end.
Now that they just saw the truth
Everything is going perfectly
Look where your at now Annie, this is your chance to shine.
And maybe, this is how they will see me it seems.
Now here I am, it is dangerous to dream
"Annie," Christy called to me. "Coming," I smiled then skipped if you will follow her.
(Back at the diner)
Lauren's P.O.V.:
"I can't believe this happened to Jess guys. And I know my sister better than anybody," I admitted pacing the diner back and forth. "Yeah, we were going to say the same thing, this isn't the Jess we know and love," Shock agreed. "I feel like something must have happened when you were talking earlier," Leo suggested. "Yeah maybe it was nerves," Sean butted in. "I don't think it's the case Sean," I told him honestly before my phone rang. I looked to see Hector calling. "Hey, we saw the ceremony. I know this isn't Jess," I told Hector picking up. "So do Lisa and I," he admitted. "How is she," I asked. "She's upset. I can't blame her. She's been crying a little bit," he replied. "Neither can I. Where are you guys," I asked. "Were on our way back to the diner. How's Shock," Hector asked.
"I'll explain when you guys get back here. Oh, let Jess know, I'll make her special cheer up smoothie and will be ready when you guys get here okay," I told Hector. "Sure thing sis," Hector answered. "Okay, see you then," I said before hanging up my phone. "Was that Hector," Sean asked. "Yeah. He, Jess and Lisa are on their way back to the diner. I'm going to make Jess her cheer up smoothie," I said to them going to the juice bar and started to make her smoothie. "I'm telling you guys what I want to know is what went wrong with the speech," Shock told us.
Shock's P.O.V.:
"Yeah. She had it perfect beforehand," Leo agreed. "But why did she say that is the question," Sean pointed out as the door opened to reveal Hector, Jess and Lisa. "Hey," Lauren greeted her sister. "Hey," Jess sniffled. "How you are holding up Jess," I asked. "Not good Shock," she admitted. "I know. Lauren made your special cheer up smoothie," I explained as Lauren came over. "Thanks sis," Jess smiled. "What's the deal with Shock," Hector asked. "Twisted my left ankle. Doctor's saying, I have to do RICE for 1 to 3 weeks in order to heal and not put any pressure on the ankle," I explained. "Ah," the others nodded. "Yeah. Jess, I know this isn't you to insult the Skelecians," I told her.
Lauren's P.O.V.:
"I know Shock; but I'm honestly confused on what I did. I read what was on the paper," Jess explained after drinking part of the smoothie. "Well is there anyway, you can replay what you said sis," I asked. "I think so Lauren. That might be a good starting point," Hector agreed with me as Jess played back what she said in the concluding paragraph. "Okay. So if we take that, maybe we can switch things around and see what is supposed to say," Keith suggested. "Well, actually I remember that the final line is baranga shink farinka fanfootee babookie," Sean recalled.
"Okay," Lisa said as she unscrambled what Sean said. "I guess what Jess was supposed to say was not on the paper. Did you make sure to write it down Jess," Mario asked joining in on the conversation. "I know I did when I first wrote this, so what do we do," she wondered. "Good question; but my instinct is telling me is has been scrambled," Leo started to say. "Wait a second, Sean you were right! I knew something fishy was happening," I realized. "Knew what Lauren," everyone asked. "Remember earlier when we felt that vibration and thought it was an earthquake," I asked. "Yeah," Hector said confused. "That must have been from Annie," I explained.
"How so," Lisa asked. "She was in the diner around the same time you guys were before leaving so, she must have scrambled the words and I recall hearing her saying that Jess would read the speech, insult them and then they would make her junior ambassador," Sean and I realized the last part. "So Annie did all of that," PJ asked. "Yeah pretty much," I nodded. "But why," Hector wondered. "Guess she wanted to brush up or show them she's better than Jess," I admitted. "Or better yet, was not happy she got runner up and Jess won," Sean added. "Yeah but what about that insult," Lisa wondered.
"Honestly, do I not want to know," I replied. "I'll check," Shock volunteered as he got his cell phone. "What are you doing Shock," Hector asked confused. "I'm going to look up the insult Jess said on the paper. Honestly, it wasn't you," he told us when Jess stared at him and looked up the insult. "While that's going on, I bet the insult was bad but not bad, bad I think," Leo told us.
"Okay. On second thought Leo, what Jess said really hurt them," Shock reacted seeing the translation. "What? What did I say," Jess asked. "Okay in all honesty, I bet you it's not that bad. Meaning the insult. How bad can it be," Sean smiled. "Uh want to take a look," Shock and Mario said holding up the phone to Sean's face. "Oh my gosh," he reacted surprised.
"What did you say oh my gosh to dude? Besides, the insult I bet was nerves and," I started to say before Sean handed me Shock's phone and saw the translation. "Okay, that got them right in the gut," I admitted wincing at the translation. "What are you guys talking about," Jess asked. "Show her," Sean told me. "Fair warning, it's not pretty," Mario told my sister.
Jess's P.O.V.:
I looked at the phone with Lisa and Hector at the translation of the insult. "I SAID THAT," I exclaimed. "Yeah. Uh huh. Pretty much," the others nodded. "Uh, no wonder they felt so insulted," I admitted. "You got that right," Keith agreed. "Now, I just wish I had a rock to hide under," I facepalmed before sinking to the sofa.
Lauren's P.O.V.:
"Okay, okay. Jess you are not hiding under a rock now. The only thing to do, is make things right," I told her. "But how Lauren," Hector asked me. "Yeah. We don't how to undo an insult to the Skelcians," Sean told me. "Yeah he's right how," they asked me. "Honestly, I don't know guys. This is harder than I thought," I shrugged. "Psst. Over here," a voice sounded. "Who said that" Hector said looking around. "I did. It's me," it sounded again. Sean and turned around while the others looked to up to see Janet in disguise.
"Janet," we all asked out loud. "Shush. I'm not supposed to be here," she told us.
"Then what are you doing here," Mario asked. "Do me a favor. Act natural and don't say anything," she told us as went to one of the benches. We got up to join her but Shock. "Uh guys, help Shock here," PJ told us. "Oh right, sorry dude," we said getting Shock. "It's fine guys. I'll listen from here," he told us as we went to the bench. "Janet. I am so, so sorry for insulting you. It wasn't my intent," Jess apologized to her friend. "I know Jess. It wasn't you. It was Annie Scrambler wasn't it," she asked us.
"Uh huh," we replied. "Figures. I'm telling you guys, if I weren't a Skelecian I would be thinking unkind thoughts of her right now," she explained. "Yeah. Lucky for you were all in the same boat," Keith added as we agreed. "Okay, Janet, I need to ask you. I know this wasn't Jess's fault, but how do we make things right," Hector asked Janet. "All I can tell you guys is the only way to make things right is by doing the potato custom." She told us. "I'm sorry come again," we all asked confused.
Lisa's P.O.V.:
"The potato custom. According to our culture, if someone insults someone else in this case Jess and the Skeleckians, he or she must present a peace offering of potatoes on sticks," Janet explained. "Heh," we all asked still unsure of the custom. "Yeah, that's the custom," she told us. "Okay, but how many potatoes do you guys need? 1 potato," Jess asked. "Two potatoes," Hector added afterwards. "Three potatoes," Shock wondered. "Four," Sean butted in. "Five," Mario quizzed. "Six,"Keith, PJ, and Leo asked. "7 potatoes," I added bewildered. "More," Janet told us.
"Okay did we really have to go down the route of the rhyme in preschool," Lauren wondered in confusion. "I think so," Shock shrugged, "Okay, now that we know of what the potato custom is, we got to do this," Sean told us. "Right," the others agreed. "Leo, what's the status on potatoes," Hector asked Leo. "We got plenty in the back. Were getting another shipment in this week so, we should be set by then," he told us. "Perfect. Now who has sticks," Sean wondered. "I do. I made sure to bring extra," Janet said giving them to us. "Perfect. I don't what we would do without you Janet," Jess smiled. "Thanks Jess. Now, make sure the potatoes are brought to the embassy and handed to everybody in sight before they leave. We don't have much time," Janet told us before leaving.
"Got it Janet. Guys, were going to need montage music so lets go," Hector said in honesty. "On it," we said as music played over the radio while we worked on the potatoes via assembly line. I was at the end of the line with Sean plating the potatoes that had sticks in them on a silver platter. Hector, Jess, and Lisa were working on putting the potatoes on the sticks. In about a few short minuets of the music, we were done. "Alright guys we did it. Potatoes are complete," I announced. We all breathed in relief. "Okay, now lets get these to the embassy so Jess can apologize to them and explain what really happened," Hector agreed.
Lauren's P.O.V.:
"Hold on Hector, not sure if you realize but Lauren and Sean can't go to the embassy with what their wearing," PJ pointed out. "True," he shrugged. "We'll be right back," I told the gang sprinting out the door once again and back into our "formal attire" that we had on earlier. "How you guys are able to do it so quickly surprises me," Keith smiled. "Well, what can we say," I grinned. "Alright gang, we got to get to the embassy and fast before everyone leaves. So Sean, you get the foil to cover the potatoes," I told the gang looking at the clock. "On it, Lauren," he told me. "Jess, you carry them to the embassy. Hector, Lisa we know what to do," I delegated to the others. "I'll stay here and keep an eye on Shock. Let me know how it goes," Mario told us.
"We will Mario," we said leaving the diner heading towards the embassy with potatoes on hand. I honestly felt nervous for Jess and couldn't blame her in all honesty. "How you feeling sis," I asked her as we walked. "Nervous," she admitted. "I know. Besides, were doing the right thing and Annie did what was wrong. You got us here to back up your claim with evidence," I smiled. "Thanks Lauren," she grinned as we went inside the embassy. Looked spiffy I must admit. "Okay Jess, you ready," Hector asked her as we stood in front of the doors where the speech was. "Ready," she replied after taking a deep breath and we opened the doors to see Annie already handing out potatoes on the platter. We were all stunned!
Sean's P.O.V.:
"She's already ahead of the game," Lauren whispered to me. "How could she know," I asked. "I don't know," she replied. "Won't you please come in," Christy told us as we looked confused and stunned. "Uh, yes. Your Excellency, I wanted to sincerely apologize for my behavior earlier about the insult. It wasn't my intent to insult the Skeleckians. The fact is Annie Scrambler," Jess started to say. "Annie Scrambler is our new Junior Ambassador, must be treated with respect and has apologized for your insult Jessica," Christy told her.
"I know but all I ask through the grace of God is that you accept my sincerest apology. Again, it wasn't my intent," Jess told her. "Of course, Jess. I forgive you. Now, as our custom dictates that after an insult that would be you Jess must be served hand and foot by our Junior Ambassador which is Annie," she told the girls. "Hold on, that's the custom," we all asked. "Yep. So, Annie you will serve our guests tonight. Their wish will be your command. Potatoes for all," Christy announced, and everyone cheered while Annie had a slow laugh of some sorts. Tables soon came out from the staff along with chairs as everyone started to find places to sit down. "Nice job Jess," I smiled. "Thanks Sean. It feels great having the trust of them again," she admitted.
Lauren's P.O.V.:
"I bet so sis," I smiled. "It sure is Lauren," Jess smiled. "Oh Jessica, there you are. I was wondering if you would like to sit next to me and Janet," Chrissy said finding her. "But I thought, the seat was reserved for the Junior Ambassador," I asked. "Yes it is but I make an exception to the rule. Besides, Janet told me everything," she replied. "She did," Sean and I asked. "Yep and I forgive you still Jess," she smiled. "Thank you, Your Excellency. I really appreciate it," Jess smiled. "Your welcome my dear. Now, who are these guys," she asked seeing Sean and I. "Oh, this is my little sister Lauren Ruiz and her best friend Sean Matthews," Jess introduced us with a smile. "Ah. It's a pleasure to meet you two," she smiled at us. "As are we Your Excellency. We've heard wonderful things about you," I curtsied to her.
"Please, please don't be so formal. Janet has told me about you guys as well. I heard you guys are pretty good at singing," she smiled. "That we are," I grinned as we all sat down to eat. Servers came out with the food while Annie strutted from table to table serving the food to the other guests. "How long do you think she'll act like this Lauren," Sean whispered. "I don't know but, I think I might have an idea on how this will end," I told him.
Hector's P.O.V.:
"So, you guys want to hear a riddle," Jess asked Chrissy and Janet. "Uh yeah we do," Janet answered. "So why was six afraid of seven," she asked them. "Oh boy. Not this one," we all muttered minus Jess. "Why," Chrissy asked. "Because seven ate nine," she told them and they started cracking up. "Lame," we silently sung under our breaths. "Jess, you are such a crackup," Chrissy told her. "I know, I know," she smiled. Annie soon came by the table. "So, Annie, how does it feel to be ambassador now," Sean asked knowing she was nearby. "Really well honestly. Why do you ask, care to relish in the glory," she wondered. "No. Just wondering that's why," Lisa smiled. "Okay," she said confused.
"Oh hey Madame Ambassador. I was wondering, would you be so kind as to spread some cheese on a cracker for me please," I asked. I think he caught on. "I will get in a just minute. Let me help the others," Annie replied kindly. "Um, actually can I have it now? I'm really hungry," he told her. "Alright then," she said not happy and sort of spread it on the cracker. "Here. All spread happy," she said to me. "Uh Annie, is that how you treat your guest," Chrissy asked honestly.
"No. Your Excellency," she lied. "Not to be rude but you missed a spot," I told her. "Alright! What is going on? I know you Electric Company are up to something," Annie said desperate. "Were not up to something. Just here happy for you," Lisa told her. "Nice try Ms. Perfect. I wanted to be first for once and honestly, I hate the Skeleckians. I didn't write how of I love them in the paper. They're just, grabank knish inkafar fantfooee kabieboo and honestly if it weren't for me I would have not messed up Jess's speech," Annie said out loud. Everyone gasped and turned to her.
"Annie. Is that true," Chrissy asked. "You messed up my speech," Jess asked after her. "Uh yeah and I'm sorry," Annie admitted. "Sorry ain't going to cut it. Annie Scrambler, you are hereby stripped of the title of Junior Ambassador," Chrissy said taking the sash from Annie. "No," she moaned. "And it is my honor to reinstate the title of ambassador to Jessica Ruiz who will sing us a song," Chrissy smiled placing the sash on Jess who smiled from ear to ear while everyone applauded in joy.
Lauren's P.O.V.:
"No I want to sing a song," Annie whined. "Can it Annie," we all told her. She growled before moving to the side. "Jess, you may sing," Chrissy told her as Jess smiled and rapped about how she loved the Skelecian culture. "You know, I'm glad Jess came through," I told Hector dancing with him since my cardigan came off. "Same here sis. I can't believe she did it," Hector agreed. "THIS IS SO NOT FAIR! I WANT TO BE JUNIOR AMBASSADOR AGAIN," Annie said whining again. "Okay, since we are in a forgiving mood Annie, you can saratonee harslow," Chrissy told her.
"What does that translate to," I asked Janet. "Clean all the dishes," she told us as we chuckled giving her all the plates. Let's just say she was confused and maybe not happy at the end. "Well, this ended nicely," I smiled as Jess talked with the other Skeleckians. "It sure did Lauren," Lisa agreed. "Yeah I saw what you guys did in standing with your sister, that was amazing," Chrissy told us. "Thank you, Your Excellency," Hector grinned.
"My pleasure guys. You are all amazing friends and family," she told us. "Thanks," Sean smiled. "Especially you Lauren, I see the way you care for others but more importantly I love your birthmark," she smiled. "My birthmark," I asked. "Of course. It's so special," she replied. "Thanks. I never found out the meaning of my birthmark but I've been told it's linked to my destiny," I admitted. "Your destiny," she asked. "Yes. Everyone says I got an extraordinary destiny. I'm meant to fulfill something," I replied.
"I know. I wonder what your destiny is," she asked. "Look into my eyes and you shall see," I said to Chrissy. She stared into my hazel brown eyes and could see the images popping in. She gasped and looked stunned and soon looked at me. "The descendant of Queen Lucy the Valiant, Your Majesty," she mumbled and curtsied to me. "Skelecians, all pay heed and bow before the one destined for greatness, she who will bring the Golden Age to our world. All pay heed to the one mentioned in the prophecy," Chrissy commanded as everyone bowed to me. I was stunned. "Your Majesty, when the time is right, we are ready to make an alliance with you," she told me.
"Of course. Uh not to be rude but shouldn't you be finishing Jess's ambassador ceremony," I asked. "Oh right. Junior Ambassador, the chosen daughter. Our new ambassador behold," she replied as everyone sung the last part together and circled around Jess who was grinning.
Jess's P.O.V.:
I can't believe I'm standing here, after all that I went through.
Dad, Jayden, I did it! Now what's next for me?
I can't stop smiling it's strange, yes this means that things are different, and they so can change.
And now I've opened that door, and finally see it face to face. I can't believe it happened so soon, I guess this is my place.
I'm not what they expect of me, but I am more and it seems. That I can love to know them. It's not dangerous to dream.
"I'm proud of you sis," Hector smiled. "Thanks big brother and you too Lauren," I smiled. "Shucks. Come on, let's head back to the diner. I hope Shock's okay," Lauren said as we walked out of the embassy to the diner.
(At the diner)
Mario's P.O.V.:
"Dude, I can't believe this caught on well for once. I have to admit not a bad idea," I told Shock as we were handing out potatoes. "All the credit goes to the Skecleians but I'm glad everyone is catching on," Shock agreed. "Yeah but we can agree they are delicious," Keith said having one in Chicago with PJ and his dad just as the others came into the diner. "Ladies and gentlemen of the Electric Diner and on Facechat. It is our pleasure to introduce and present to you for the first time, the junior ambassador of Earth to the planet Skeleci, Jessica Ruiz," Sean and Lauren announced as Jess came into applauds by us wearing her sash proudly.
Lauren's P.O.V.:
"Lauren, you didn't have to announce," Jess told me. "Well I chose to, because your my sister," I grinned. "Hey, on another note business is booming," Hector noticed. "Yeah. We told people about the potato custom, and it's selling like hot cakes," Mario smiled. "Uh Mario, didn't you mean hot potatoes," Keith, Leo and PJ told him as they laughed. "Okay lamest joke in the book," I admitted. "Yeah," they agreed as we all sat down together. "Well, Lauren another mission done," Sean asked. "Yep. Sure is my friend," I smiled as we just enjoyed having dinner together. Man, this was amazing and crazy.
Pfew! There we go everyone next chapter is done! I can't believe this was hard to write and possibly the longest chapter ever! I can't wait to continue more of Lauren's story for you guys! Enjoy for now guys!
