"Marinette everything is going to be fine don't worry. You got one right? A letter?" Luka asked her with a smile and Marinette looked at him with wide eyes.
Luka sat down on Marinette's couch and he gestured for her to sit down next to him. Marinette sat next to him as Luka took out his letter from inside his guitar case and he handed it to her. "This is the letter I got. You can read it."
Marinette grabbed the letter and opened it before starting to read it.
Luka Couffaine. How are you my 17 year old self? I'm writing this letter from your future. Actually I have an important favor to ask you. I want you to erase the regret that haunts me. I don't want you to experience the same regret and go down the same path I did.
"Regret." Marinette mumbled.
"It says to get Adrien to join soccer and to not invite him to hang out with us on the first day of school but I didn't read the letter until I got home that day and after I invited him." Luka stated. "Did you get yours on the first day of school?"
"Yes before I got to school mine came in the same kind of envelope and a woman named Tikki gave it to me and said she would be my guardian though following the letter." Marinette replied, handing Luka back his letter.
Luka nodded. "A man named Sazz gave me mine and said the same thing."
"So is that all what it says so far?" Marinette asked him.
"No, it also wants me to do everything I can to save him." Luka replied.
'There's only one regret of not being able to save Adrien. Future me and future Luka want us to save them by saving Adrien now. How do we do that?'
"You don't have to worry anymore. Together we'll save Adrien no doubt." Luka told her with a smile. "We can totally do this." Luka reads his letter. "'September 4th Adrien's birthday I want you to bug him to find out what day he was born then ask him what kind of present he wants to get'. It seems that our future self found out too late so we couldn't celebrate his birthday though my future self wanted us to do it now in December I guess because of the long break."
At that moment Marinette realized that there was a lot of Luka's letter missing. "Where's the rest?"
"Huh?- oh I left the rest at home." Luka replied. "It's okay there was nothing important in the rest… I think." He said playfully.
"What!? You think?" Marinette exclaimed.
On the last day before winter break the group was having lunch at the classroom. "Hey Adrien, when is your birthday?" Luka asked Adrien.
"That's kinda random." Adrien stated.
"Well I'm just curious since the whole group knows each other's birthday besides yours." Luka replied.
"It's on September 4th." Adrien simply stated.
"What but that was months ago!" Luka exclaimed.
"Huh!?" Marinette freaked out from Luka's sudden outburst.
"Let's celebrate it during break." Alya stated. "I mean if you want."
"Thanks guys but months have already passed since my birthday. Let's wait until next year." Adrien replied.
"Nonsense, the group celebrates each other's birthdays every year and we'll do the same for you." Luka stated.
Adrien smiled. "You guys won't take no as an answer right?" Everyone shook their heads no. "Alright then I'll love that."
"Great, I'll ask my parents to make the cake." Marinette said with a smile.
"If their cakes are as great as their bread I'm sure that I'll love it." Adrien replied, smiling back.
Later as Adrien was throwing away his lunch Alya and Juleka walked over to him. "Adrien -"
"Anything you want?" Alya finished for Juleka.
"Oh I don't need presents or anything like that." Adrien replied.
"We never mentioned presents." Alya said with a smirk.
"We're just asking." Juleka stated.
"Alright then there is something I want. Tickets to the next national soccer game." Adrien replied.
"Okay one ticket just for you." Juleka stated.
"So what do you want?" Nino asked Adrien in a whisper during class.
"Listen, I don't need a present." Adrien stated.
"I wasn't talking about a present silly." Nino replied.
"Fine, then I want a copy of your recent mix." Adrien stated.
"Alright got it." Nino replied. "Though it's not going to be a present."
After school Adrien was getting ready to leave. "Bye Marinette."
"Wait, is there anything specific that you want?" Marinette quickly asked him, standing up.
"No I'm good, thanks." Adrien replied. "Alya Juleka and Nino are already giving me stuff."
At that moment Marinette realized what Adrien was using as a sports bag… nothing. "Don't you have a sports bag?"
Adrien frowned. "I used to have one…but it got thrown out during the move-that's way too expensive!"
Marinette smirked. "It doesn't have to be since it's not like it's a present. Bye see you later."
"Totally a present." Nino stated as he and Adrien walked away.
Marinette soon left the class but was stopped by Kagami. "Nice work, I'll give him that bag."
"That's fine, then he'll get two." Marinette replied.
"Adrien is too good for you Marinette just give up." Kagami stated.
"You give up, Adrien dumped you." Alya said sternly as she and Juleka walked over to them.
"Who starts dating someone and then all of a sudden they aren't interested in them?" Kagami asked them harshly.
"Adrien likes Marinette, that's why he broke up with you so get over it." Juleka told Kagami sternly.
"Wow aren't you a brave one shy Juleka. What a joke." Kagami stated with a soft laugh.
Juleka clenched her fists and walked in front of Kagami. "Yes I guess you're right about that I'm being brave and as brave as I am I might as well tell the whole school that you are really a bully."
"Whatever, I don't need Adrien anyway." With that Kagami walked away.
"We won, girls." Alya cheered. "Take that Kagami Tsurugi!"
"I'm sorry I didn't mean to cause a scene." Marinette told them softly.
"Oh please she had it coming and we were ready for her." Alya replied.
"Let me know if she tries something else again." Juleka stated.
Marinette smiled. "Thank you girls, you really are the best friends ever."
"We're sorry Marinette, we should have stopped Adrien and Kagami from dating." Juleka stated with a frown.
"In fact we encouraged it." Alya added.
"Marinette, we know that you are in love with him and it's alright." Juleka stated. "We should have noticed it sooner, sorry."
"We're friends which means you can tell us how you feel." Alya added with a smile. "So stop hiding things."
Marinette nodded. "You're right, thank you again but I don't need help now."
"We figured that you would say that." Juleka replied.
"Classic Marinette." They said at the same time giggling and Marinette blushed in embarrassment.
"Do you have any ideas of what I can do for Marinette?" Adrien asked Luka as they walked home.
"Ask her out." Luka simply said.
"What so you won't?" Adrien asked him.
Luka shook his head with a smile. "Nope."
"Well that's not fair." Adrien stated with a chuckle.
"So what do you want?" Luka asked him.
"I don't know everybody has already asked me so there's nothing much left." Adrien replied.
"There has to be something c'mon what do you want Adrien?" Luka asked again.
"I honestly don't know… okay fine get me a bouquet of flowers." Adrien replied.
"Are you sure?" Luka asked.
Adrien nodded. "Yea positive."
The group walked over to Adrien's grave and put their gifts for him on top. Alya and Juleka gave him a ticket to the next national soccer game, Nino gave him a copy of his recent mix, Marinette gave him a sports bag that she made herself and Luka gave Nino LJ so he could put down the bouquet of flowers he got for him.
"Adrien, have a happy 18th birthday. We miss you." They said at the same time.
At that moment Luka took the flowers again and handed it to Marinette. "Here these are for you from Adrien. 'If I get them I'll give them straight to Marinette' that's what Adrien told me."
Marinette took them but she was confused. "But why me?"
Luka rubbed the back of his neck and chuckled softly. "Uh funny story-"
"Marinette we should have helped Adrien when he was still with us… sorry." Alya stated.
"We thought at the time that telling you the truth would make things more difficult for you." Juleka added.
"Adrien loved you…he was in love with you." Luka finished.
Marinette looked at them shocked then at Adrien's grave sadly.
'He said there was someone… I always wondered who it was and now even though he's no longer with us… even though I can't ask him anymore he still found a way to give me flowers… if he were here now I wonder what he would say…'
"Happy birthday Adrien." The group said to Adrien at the same time. It was the first day of winter break and they were in the living room of Marinette's house and the cake Marinette's parents made for Adrien was on the coffee table.
Adrien smiled. "Thanks guys."
Everyone started giving him his gifts. "This is from us." Alya said as she and Juleka handed him a small bag.
"A ticket for the next national soccer game? Thanks girls." Adrien said with a smile taking the bag but not opening it.
"How do you know you didn't even open it!" Alya exclaimed playfully.
"This present is from me, please don't act surprised." Nino stated handing his present to Adrien.
"Your mix? Thank you." Adrien took it, still acting surprised. Marinette gave him a sports bag that she made him herself and this time Adrien really was surprised but not for what the gift was but for the fact that she made it. "I love it, thank you it's perfect."
Luka handed Adrien the bouquet of flowers and everyone started laughing. "Be quiet guys, this is what Adrien said he wanted."
Adrien blushed, embarrassed, glancing at Marinette. "What no! I said I was kidding, why did you bring me flowers anyway?"
Luka puts the flowers in Adrien's hand and whispers. "You can do this."
Also when you ask him about a present make sure you're the last one to ask him. I'm pretty sure he'll ask for flowers.
Adrien looked at Marinette and gave her the flowers. "Here they're for you from me." Marinette took them with a blush.
Ask him the reason why.
"For me? But why?" Marinette asked softly.
"Well… because… because I thought you deserved flowers." Adrien blurted out with a blush. Alya and Juleka dragged the boys out the door before closing it behind them. "So before… At the cultural festival I said that out of the three girls I would want to ask you out… but the truth is it doesn't matter how many other girls there are, my answer will never change. I will always choose you… I know that this was awkward but I just wanted you to know."
From outside the door the girls gave each other high fives as Nino chuckled and Luka smiled softly.
I'm not sure why but back then for some reason I didn't want to support Adrien and Marinette, however when Adrien died I was afraid Marinette would never stop crying. I wondered why I hadn't done a better job at making sure that they were both happy so to the me of 10 years ago please watch over the two of them. Please make sure that they both realize what they feel for each other. Please make it so the two of them are happy and that they can smile together even 10 years from now. I leave them both in your hands."
Even though it was break the soccer team still had practice and Marinette went to watch them. Adrien walked over to her. "Good morning Marinette."
Marinette was going to answer when she noticed Adrien had the sports bag she made him. "You're using the bag!?" Adrien smiled at her brightly and Marinette smiled back as brightly.
Adrien walked to the boys locker room as the rest of the group walked up to Marinette. "So you're not going to reply to him?" Luka asked with an eyebrow raised.
Marinette blushed. "What if my answer ends up annoying him?" Luka sighs, Nino chuckles and the girls laugh. Marinette covers her face. "I just don't know what to say."
"You could always try telling him how you feel." Juleka stated.
"Yea but how?" Marinette asked looking back at them.
"Marinette just talk to him." Luka stated. "Use words."
Marinette blushed even more as Adrien walked over to them, obviously hearing their conversation. "Don't even worry about it, Marinette." He smiled at her.
After the soccer game Luka walked over to Marinette after walking out from the boys locker room. "Marinette, do you have a second?"
Marinette nodded. "Sure."
Luka led Marinette away from the group where they couldn't be heard or seen. "Do you have anything specific for tomorrow in your letter?"
"For tomorrow? Let me see." Marinette took out her letter and read the part for tomorrow.
Based on what Felix Adrien's cousin told us after Adrien died that Adrien attempted suicide on this day. He said that Adrien tried to hang himself with a towel in his bedroom and was taken to the hospital unconscious later Adrien was absent from school for several days.
Marinette looked at Luka with tears in her eyes. "Luka…"
Luka nodded with a frown. "There's my answer. It said the same thing in my letter but the letters and our world aren't exactly alike. There's a chance that he might not even attempt suicide in this future… or if he does this time he might actually die."
"What do we do?" Marinette asked.
"Talk to him." Tikki said as she was suddenly walking over to them with a man with black hair with green tips and yellow eyes.
"Tikki?/Sazz?" Marinette and Luka asked at the same time then they looked at each other. "Is she/he your guardian?"
"Yes Marinette this is Sazz Luka's guardian and hi Luka I'm Tikki Marinette's guardian now that we introduced each other back to business. To stop Adrien from attempting suicide you guys need to talk to him and let him know that no matter what you'll guys will listen to him and be there when he needs you." Tikki replied.
Luka looked over at Marinette. "I'll take care of it, don't worry."
I want you two to talk to him about his feelings.
'A day before his attempted suicide Adrien met some friends from California. He talked to them about his mother and mentioned that he wanted to die too but his friends thought that he was joking.'
"Thank you so much for coming." Amelie told the group as they were about to leave. "You coming was such a blessing for me."
"You're welcome also if you don't mind we would like to take Adrien's picture with us." Luka replied as he was holding LJ. He was referring to the picture used for Adrien's grave.
"Sure but I would like it back soon. Where are you going?" Amelie asked.
"To a field." Luka replied and Amelie nodded.
'Adrien died the day after Valentine's Day… I couldn't give it to him. I was always too worried about what he would think of me…I thought that no matter how many chances I was given I just wouldn't be able to do it.'
The group was having lunch when Marinette saw that Adrien got a text and that he was surprised with what it said. Marinette feared it was what the letter said.
`I wish that I could have said something to him back then but what's the right thing to say?'
Later it was only Adrien and Marinette since the rest of the group had something else they had to do. Well Luka didn't really leave, he just wanted to give Marinette and Adrien a chance to talk before he interfered. He watched them from afar.
Adrien and Marinette were sitting on a bench and Adrien was spaced out. "Adrien?"
Adrien looked at her with a soft smile. "Sorry I was just wondering how it would feel if I could just float away with the wind. Kinda like superman."
"You can't though." Marinette mumbled.
Adrien chuckled. "I wasn't being serious. I was imagining that If I was superman then maybe I could have been able to save mom. Just a joke."
'Adrien…he's acting a little weird.'
"Oh yea I'm meeting up with some friends from California tonight." Adrien stated. "They're all guys though."
"Please don't." Marinette quickly blurted out.
Adrien looked at her surprised and shocked. "Why not?"
Marinette was out of words. "Because uh..."
"Please don't meet them." Luka stated walking over to them.
"Luka what are you doing here? I thought you had to do something." Adrien looked at him confused then at Marinette then back at Luka. "Okay what is going on?"
"Hang out with us instead." Luka replied.
"Huh? Where's this coming from?" Adrien asked.
"It's coming from us never knowing why you won't talk to us." Luka replied. "Especially when you're upset."
"What do you mean?" Adrien replied.
"Your mother Adrien." Luka stated.
"Wait, how do you know about mom?" Adrien asked before looking straight at Marinette. "Did Marinette tell you?"
"Yes, something like that." Luka replied.
Marinette opened her mouth quickly. "I-"
"I'm sorry there's no way I can talk to you guys about this." Adrien said with a stern look before standing up. "I'm lucky to have you as friends so when we hang out I want to laugh."
"Real friends support each other, they talk." Luka said sternly. "If you're upset then say something. I know that we can help you if you just let us and what kind of people would we be if we just sit around and laugh while you're suffering alone." Adrien looked at Luka surprised. "Do you ever think of dying?"
Adrien frowned and slowly nodded. "I do, everyday."
"Why?" Luka asked.
Adrien's eyes start to tear up. "Because it's my fault. Because I broke the promise I made to my mom. I thought it was a pain and now she's…I wasn't there for her.. It's my fault."
It broke Marinette's heart to see Adrien crying that she stood up and hugged him and started to tear up too. "Everybody thinks that kind of stuff is a pain like how my mom never stops bugging me and Juleka. We need to go study and clean our rooms. It's natural, it's normal." Luka stated as he hugged him and made it a group hug. "Let the guilt and regret come. You didn't do it. It's not your fault." Adrien started to cry harder.
'It doesn't matter what Adrien thinks of me, he deserves the truth. He deserves to know that he's needed.'
"Adrien, please don't die." Marinette blurted out and Luka smiled, breaking the hug so it was only her hugging Adrien. "I don't want to lose you. I uh… feel the same way. I…I love you so whatever you do.. Please don't go away!" Marinette looked up at him still in tears and saw a soft smile on Adrien's face as his teary eyes looked at her.
"I told you that you didn't have to worry about it." Adrien replied as he wiped off his tears before hugging her back. "Thank you."
What the three did not know was that there were 3 pairs of eyes watching them from afar.
'Adrien is always smiling. He has smiled like that since I first met him but there's still a sadness behind that smile. I really never noticed it before. One day I would like to see Adrien smile for real.'
