Chapter 16: Can We Talk? (Kelly's POV)
"I was just coasting till we met
You remind me just how good it can get"
- I'm With You by Vance Joy
Dean and I had barely spoken since they arrived after the attack. I didn't argue when he led me upstairs and prodded me towards one of the bedrooms to check my injuries, leaving Michelle to Sam's care. The boys had better first aid supplies than we did and Dean was definitely better prepared to treat my gunshot wound than anyone else in the house. I sat down on one of the beds watching as he pulled supplies out of a bag he'd brought with him.
I felt weirdly detached from my body. Sam's painkillers were stronger than expected, likely hitting me faster due to blood loss. Dean worked on my arm first, removing the towel I'd been using on the wound. I winced as he pulled it back and looked at the damage.
"Please tell me you killed whoever did this to you?"
"I think Eric did. I...I got knocked unconscious." I felt shame at that. "I let someone get the jump on me. He knocked me out pretty fast."
Dean was still working on my arm but tensed up when I spoke of getting beaten. "It's not your fault." He continued working in silence, patching up my arm before pulling my shirt off to inspect my torso after I explained I'd been kicked.
"Wow Dean, waste no time getting me naked." I joked, but he didn't laugh, just looked at me for a long moment before moving to inspect my ribs for any other injuries. Some bruises were blossoming but he was confident nothing was broken. After he was satisfied I wasn't hiding any other injuries, he knelt in front of me.
"When Jane called me and told me you were attacked...I thought the worst."
I reached out with my good arm, putting a hand on his cheek, "It was terrifying, but turns out having a house full of supernatural beings is quite handy." I forced a smile.
He leaned his head into my hand, "I can't believe I'm thankful for a vamp saving my girl."
My heart flipped at that, it was the first time Dean had said anything to quantify whatever it was we were doing. I leaned forward and kissed him, before wincing at the pain in my side.
Dean used that as a cue to stand, and pulled out one of his t-shirts from the bag, handing it over. "It'll be less constricting. Plus the one you had on was covered in blood."
The painkillers wore off sometime in the night and I found myself lying awake. I sat up with some trouble and saw both Jane and Michelle were sleeping. Jane never slept in our room. She must have been worried.
I tried and failed at falling back asleep, deciding instead to go downstairs. I had no concept of the time, but the house was mostly silent. I could hear muted voices in the kitchen. As I checked the living room, I found Sam passed out on the couch. The painkillers were still on the table near him from earlier. I grabbed the bottle and continued to the kitchen to get water. I found Dean playing cards with Eric and Spike and had to do a double take at the sight.
"Can't sleep?" Dean turned in his chair and was looking at me worried.
"Painkillers wore off." I shook the bottle. "Came to get a fix. Though I might already be high. Are you all actually getting along?"
"Dean here seemed to think he owed us a thank you, for saving you." Eric smiled across the table at Dean. "No thank you is required. I don't like being disturbed in my home. I also much preferred the fresh blood, to the bags."
Dean looked like he bit back whatever he wanted to say to that, and they continued playing poker. I turned away from them to get water and downed a pill. When I turned back, Spike was laying down a winning hand and gloating. I moved to stand next to Dean, "Hey, can we talk. In private?"
"Oh, nancy boys in trouble."
Dean looked at Spike disappointed. "Nancy boy? Really? That's all you've got?"
He folded his hand and stood up, motioning for me to lead the way. I headed towards the stairs with Dean following when I remembered all the bedrooms were occupied. I grabbed my coat instead and took his hand to lead him outside. We walked wordlessly towards the Impala. It was still haphazardly parked, the boys having arrived in a panic. I leaned my back against the passenger side door, and Dean stopped in front of me.
Dean raised his eyebrows in question. "What's up?"
"What are we doing?"
"I don't know, you just dragged me out here." His face changed to worry. "Wait, how hard did you get hit in the head?"
I smacked his chest lightly. "I mean you and me. What are we doing?"
I'd been stressing about my last conversation with Dean following our fight. Even though he said he trusted me, I still didn't know where we really stood. I could feel myself getting more than attached, but as my role in this world changed, I no longer felt as carefree as I had when we first started hooking up.
Dean was silent in response. I could see he was thinking about what to say, so I continued. "I tried to pretend that whatever we've been doing was just fun, but when we had that fight, and then now with this attack." I took a deep breath, "I could have died, again, today and that scared the shit out of me. I just...I don't know what this is and I know it's not really fair to ask you for more, but I-"
He cut me off, "I can't promise you a white picket fence, you know that. Hell, you know that better than a lot of women I've known. But do I want that? I do...or whatever that looks like for me. Sam and I, we've both talked about it. What we would do if we do stop this apocalypse. He wants me to have that life, I want it too. So whatever this is, whatever you want to call it, I'm in."
We stared at one another for a long beat, my heart pounding in my chest. "Even if more supernatural vessels come through?"
"I don't like it, but yes, even then."
I reached forward with my good arm and pulled him towards me into a kiss. As I broke it, I smiled up at him. "So, about almost dying again today." His brows furrowed, clearly not knowing where I was going with this. "I would have died a virgin. Again. And on your watch nonetheless."
His expression lightened and he laughed, but his eyes darkened. "What do you say we go for a drive?"
"I would like that very much."
