"Sheldon, there's a special screening of The Avengers on Saturday. Are you coming?" Howard asked at the comic book store a month after Sheldon and Amy told their parents he's Max's father.
Pausing his browsing, Sheldon looked up from the comic books in front of him. "I've got plans this weekend. Amy and I are taking Max to Disneyland this weekend. She promised him we'd go if he didn't say anything to her parents before we could sit down and explain our situation to them. He kept his end of the deal, so now Amy and I are keeping our end of the bargain. He let it slip to Missy when they were Christmas shopping and he called me dad, but we only said he couldn't tell our parents. We didn't say anything about not telling Missy or Georgie, so technically he did what we asked."
"Oh, I love Disneyland," Raj interrupted the conversation. "It's been years since we've all gone together. We should skip the movie and go to Disneyland together."
"You guys should go to the movie because you're not invited to join us at Disneyland this weekend," Sheldon interjected before Leonard and Howard chimed in with wanting to skip their movie. "This is something Amy, Max, and I are doing; just the three of us. We changed his life forever last year and he's handled it remarkably well. He's been asking to go for years. We decided now was the right time to go."
"Guess what?" Max excitedly asked Sheldon before he was all the way in the car when Amy picked him up the morning of their Disneyland trip. "I'm tall enough for all the rides this time. I was too short the last time we went, but I was only four then, so I was too scared to go on them even if I was tall enough."
Sheldon glanced at the seven-year-old in the backseat while fastening his seat belt. "And because you're seven now, you're not scared anymore?"
"Yep. And because you'll be next to me on all of them. I know you won't do anything too scary, so if you go on the ride, it's okay for me to go on. Momma said Disneyland has the best churros and she promised I could get one. I also want to get a Mickey ice cream bar. I got one the last time we went and I got chocolate all over my face."
Smiling while listening to Max's excitement over the things he wanted to do at the theme park, Amy interjected. "I said you can get one special treat. You'll need to choose between a churro and a Mickey bar."
"But I want both! Maybe dad will buy me one and you can buy me the other?"
Sheldon was not prepared for that suggestion, but quickly jumped in with, "How about we share a churro and Mickey bar? I'm sure there will be other things you see there you want to try, as well, so don't decide until we get there and you see everything they have."
"Can we come back?" Max asked walking out of the theme park between Amy and Sheldon. "I think today was the best day ever!"
The adults shared a look over their son's head. "We'll come back sometime. Raj wanted everyone to come when he heard what we were doing today. Maybe we can plan a trip with everyone?" Sheldon hesitantly suggested.
"That would be so much fun. We can all get matching Mickey ears with our names on them like mine and dad's," the boy plucked the iconic ears off his head and looked at his name embroidered on the back before passing them to Amy, who let them dangle from her fingers by the elastic strap. "Why is the car parked so far away? Why can't it be close to the park? I'm tired of walking."
Sheldon noticed an empty bench just ahead and had an idea. "How does a piggyback ride the rest of the way sound?" He sat on the edge of the bench while Max climbed on his back. Once he and Max were situated, they continued their walk back to the car, "My dad used to do this with Missy all the time. Although she would ask for a piggyback ride just around the house. I never saw the point when by the time I climbed on and dad stood up again, I could have walked across the house just as fast."
Max tightened his grip around Sheldon's neck, "Dad? Why haven't I met your dad before? I've met Grandma Mary and Meemaw and Missy and Georgie, but I've never met your dad."
"Maybe we should talk about this when we get home?" Amy was worried, knowing Sheldon didn't like talking about his father and this wasn't the most ideal location to be having this conversation.
"It's okay, Amy," Sheldon cut her off before quietly continuing. "You haven't met my dad because he died when I was fourteen."
Processing this information, Max was quiet for a few moments as they continued their walk to the parking garage. "That's only seven years older than I am now. Are you going to die when I'm fourteen?"
"Not if I can help it," replied Sheldon. "My dad didn't take very good care of himself and I do what I can to take care of myself. We never know when we're going to die, but you can do what you can to take care of yourself and make sure the people in your life know you appreciate and love them."
Tightening his grip once again, Max leaned forward and whispered in Sheldon's ear, "I love you, dad."
"I love you, too. And I think I have to agree with you that today was quite possibly the best day ever."
I wasn't planning on posting 2 chapters so close together, but I'm at Disneyland right now and remembered I'd written this one. I thought it would be appropriate to post the Disneyland one shot from Disneyland.
