This one takes place about a week after Halley was born. Max and Amy have been living with Sheldon for a few months.
"How was school? Are you excited for Christmas break?" Amy asked Max after picking him up from the last day of school before two weeks off for Christmas and New Year's.
Tossing his backpack on the floor of the backseat, Max nodded while fastening his seatbelt. "Yeah. We had a holiday party today. The teacher said we can't call it a Christmas party because not everyone celebrates Christmas. What am I doing for winter break? Am I going to grandma and grandpa's every day like last year?"
"Do you want to go to grandma and grandpa's?" Amy glanced in the mirror to take note of her son's face as she asked the question.
"Not really, but it sounds like I have to," the eight-year-old stared out the window. "Hey, where are you going? This isn't the way home."
Amy continued to drive the car while explaining the plan for Max's school break. "I took a few extra days off work after both Christmas and New Year's, so you only have to go to grandma and grandpa's a total of four days instead of almost two full weeks. We're going to Howard and Bernadette's house. You couldn't meet Halley when she was born, but now that they're home from the hospital, Bernadette suggested you come over to meet her."
Bouncing in his seat, Max exclaimed, "Really? You said I couldn't meet her until after Christmas! Today is the best day ever."
Bernadette sighed as she watched Max make a fuss over Halley. "This is the first time she's stopped crying since we brought her home. I swear my ears are ringing from not hearing her constant wailing."
"I still can't believe Max was ever that little," Amy reminisced. "I'm telling you; it's going to feel like forever, but it's also going to go faster than you think. Aside from Halley constantly crying, how has it been since you brought her home?"
"It's been rough. She's been crying, I've barely slept. Howie has been helping with what he can, but he's not exactly the most helpful with stuff around the house. I just want him to handle things for twenty minutes so I can take a shower. My hair is disgusting."
Amy offered the blonde a small smile. "I remember what that was like. I think Max cried if I wasn't holding him until he was almost a month old. At least you have Howard to help. My dad helped me when he could, but he was still working then, so I was on my own during the day."
Starting to tear up, Bernadette sniffled, "I can't believe I'm complaining to you about how hard this is. Of course, you know how hard it is and you did it by yourself. I'm sorry for complaining."
"Hey, it's okay," Amy tried to comfort her friend while leaning over to hug her. "Halley seems content for right now. Why don't you go upstairs, take a shower, and put on some clean clothes? I'm sure you'll feel better once you do that. I'll take care of Halley if she starts to cry."
While Bernadette was upstairs, Howard walked in the front door with a pack of diapers tucked under his arm. "I got more diapers. Oh, hi Amy. Hey, Max. Where's Bernie?"
"I sent her to take a shower. Max has been entertaining Halley since we got here, but we should be heading home soon. Let Bernadette know she can call me anytime. I'm more than willing to come over anytime you guys need a hand. It looks like Max loves Halley and won't object to coming over. Max, we gotta head home. I'm pretty sure Sheldon will be home from work. He and Leonard were going to pick up dinner on their way."
"Can't we have dinner here?" pleaded Max, who had been mostly quiet since arriving at the Wolowitz house. "Halley likes me. She's been watching me since we got here."
Howard chimed in, "You're more than welcome to come back to play with her anytime you want. I'm sure Bernie won't mind."
Max frowned as he stood from where he was sitting with Halley on the floor. "Okay. Hey, momma?" when Amy acknowledged him, he continued his question, "Are you and dad going to have a baby?"
"We're not planning on having a baby anytime soon," she shared.
"Bernadette and I weren't exactly planning on having a baby, either, but nine months later, here we are."
Scowling, Amy ended the conversation, "Not helping, Howard. Let's go home, Max."
Max had gone to bed, leaving Amy and Sheldon in the living room. Amy decided it was the perfect time to share Max's question with him, just in case Max brought it up to Sheldon later. "Max was great with Halley earlier. He didn't want to leave until Howard said he can come back whenever he wants."
"Great," groaned the physicist. "Exactly what I want to do, spend more time at Wolowitz's house. But I'm glad he enjoyed the afternoon. I know he was bummed he couldn't see Halley when we all went to the hospital when she was born."
"He asked if you and I were going to have a baby. I told him we're not planning on it anytime soon, but I realized we haven't talked about it since Max and I moved in here."
Sheldon was somewhat shocked at learning his son's question. "Oh, um, I guess we haven't discussed that lately. We've been so focused on everything else recently that we haven't talked about it. Are you telling me this because you want to talk about having a baby?"
"We don't have to, I just wanted to let you know in case he asks you about it," Amy began to make herself a cup of tea. She also made one for Sheldon, which she passed to him as she sat next to him on the couch.
Accepting the warm mug, Sheldon was quiet for a few minutes, "I've thought about it. Us having a baby. Max is a good kid, I don't foresee any other children we have being any different."
"You've thought about that?" questioned Amy, while setting her mug on the coffee table. "How much have you thought about this? And, children? As in you want to have more than just one more?"
"Of course, I've thought about this. Although the dirty diapers and spit-up aren't appealing, I do think it would be nice to have a baby with you. And, yes, children, as in more than one. Ideally, I'd like fifteen kids, but I'll settle for two more, as long as the number is divisible by three. Have you thought about us having a baby?" Questioned Sheldon while watching Amy's reaction to his revelation.
Smiling, Amy nodded in agreement. "I've thought it would be nice for Max to have a little brother or sister someday. Not now, though. I'd prefer for us to be married before we do that. I do like the idea of having three kids, especially with Max being so much older than any future kids we might have. I can't wait to see you with our baby, given you didn't get to have that time with Max. Do you ever feel like you missed out on something by not knowing?"
"Sometimes," Sheldon shrugged his shoulders. "Knowing how amazing he is now, there are times I wish I could have seen him when he was an infant. Then I remember that I've known him since he was two. He doesn't remember a time when I haven't been in his life, so while I might feel like I've missed out on something, I've always been around for him. The decisions we made individually ten years ago are the best decisions we've ever made. You want to wait until after we're married to have a baby. Do you think much would change if we were to get married?"
Amy was silent for a moment while she thought of the best way to answer Sheldon's question. "I don't think it would. We've been living together for a while. Max loves living here and seeing you every day. Nothing makes me happier than waking up next to you every morning. Speaking of which, I think it's time for bed."
"I agree. It is getting quite late," Sheldon stood from the couch and extended his hand to Amy.
