The visit to Asami and the guys turned out to be a disaster for Korra as she ended up overhearing Asami's father talking to someone and the circumstances of which were suspicious. The entire day was spent searching his factories for evidence and I came over from the island to help, opening up crates and looking in even the smallest spaces but ultimately we came up with nothing. "I don't get it, usually when you have a hunch about something Korra you're right." I said with a shrug as I walked up to her, having cleaned out the last factory. "If you say Hiroshi is up to something then I believe you, but we have to come up with hard evidence to prove it."
"I know, that's what's so frustrating!" Korra growled before hammering a fist against a forklift. Glancing around I observed all of the staff and workers being questioned, officers crawling over the building as Tenzin and Lin overlooked everything. Sighing softly I was about to walk away when Korra gripped my arm, making me stop and look back. "Take a look at this." She held out a note which she had just been secretly passed and I frowned, reading through it before calling my uncle and Lin over.
"Now this is just getting weird. Something's not right here." I announced as the adults both read the note, asking us to meet an informant at midnight. "Uncle? What do you think we should do?"
"It would be unwise to not pursue all leads. I will go personally to see what this informant has to say." He announced and Korra immediately said that she would go too, Lin also insisting that she go. Just as I was about to open my mouth to state that I'd stick with them, Tenzin held up his hand and I stopped, jaw dropping in disbelief as my uncle put his foot down. "Kanna, you will go back to the island and stay with Pema and the children. Amon has been quiet for too long and it is making me suspicious. This could very well be a trap and a diversion, so I do not want all of us to be caught in the same place." Puffing my cheeks I folded my arms and looked away.
"You're just saying that so you can guilt trip me into agreeing to look out for everyone whilst you get to go and have all the fun." I announced and he answered me with a warm smile, making my stubbornness crumble so I hung my head in resignation. "Alright fine, I'll make sure nothing happens to Pema or the kids. You could well be right after all." It was true. With Amon being so quiet after such a proud display of his power, it made no sense that he hadn't already made his next move. Also, I had already rationalised that one of his primary targets would not only be the councilmembers but the air-benders themselves, seeing as they were the last of their nation and to wipe them out would mean the end of their dynasty as well as the end of Aang's ancestral lineage. Air-bending was important to this family, though it had caused its own problems admittedly. "Korra, promise me you'll be careful."
"Don't worry, I will." Reaching out I hugged her tightly, squeezing her against me as she did the same before I let go and head off to return to the island where the children were all waiting for me.
"What's going on Kanna? Is daddy alright?" Jinora asked me with worry as I climbed the last step and smiled to them, kneeling down and spreading my arms so that they could all be enveloped.
"Your dad is just fine, he's as safe as can be and is just helping Chief Beifong and Korra do some more investigating for work. Unfortunately he's not going to be home until very late tonight, but luckily for us that means I can read you two bedtime stories!" Ikki and Meelo instantly cheered, however I knew I hadn't convinced Jinora so I leaned forwards and kissed her forehead. "I promise, everything's alright." I said to her more sincerely so she exhaled and nodded her head, allowing me to lead them all back inside where we had dinner with Pema then she sat down with us as I made up some stories to tell everyone, using a lamp and a screen to make shadow puppets to entertain everyone until finally Pema clapped her hands.
"Okay everyone! Time for bed. Meelo, no arguments, we have to get our beauty sleep and mommy is tired. Come on, that's it." She ushered however as Meelo tried to escape he ran straight into me as I blocked his way then hoisted him up over my shoulder.
"Nice try kiddo." I smirked as he yelled and struggled and did not stop until I'd planted him in bed and tucked him in. "Sleep well Meelo." Kissing his head I left him to settle with Pema coming to sit beside him as I went to Ikki and Jinora, helping to undo their hair and brush through their locks at the same time so that neither of them squabbled over who got my attention first. I was like a hero to these kids, it was a great feeling.
"Kanna, are you sure you don't want children of your own some day?" Ikki asked me in between yawns, making me chuckle as she blinked sleepily. "Because I really want to see you get married so I can be a bridesmaid at your wedding!"
"I'll marry you Kanna." Meelo offered, sitting upright suddenly and jabbing a thumb at himself proudly. "I'll build you a huge temple for us to live in and you can cook me delicious food all day long." Pema snorted and I balked, momentarily stunned at the seriousness at Meelo's tone however Jinora came to my rescue with a distasteful look on her face.
"Kanna isn't going to marry you Meelo, she's our cousin! That'll just be weird." She explained however Meelo just stuck out his tongue.
"You're weird!"
"Now, now kids, no fighting right before bedtime. Calm time, which means no arguments." Pema said in her mom voice, making everyone stop their bickering as I continued to brush through the girls' hair.
"Well Meelo, as much as I'm touched by your offer, I'm afraid you're also a little too young for me. Don't worry, you'll meet a pretty girl one day and you'll live happily ever after." Ikki sighed wistfully, probably imagining the man she wanted to marry along with sparkles and rainbows surrounding everything. With a light pinch to her cheek I told her I was done before picking her up for a hug then tucked her into bed as Jinora sorted herself, though I kissed her head again. I sat with the girls as Pema sang to us all, sending Meelo to sleep pretty quickly and the girls both drifted with sleepy smiles, making me relax to watch them be so peaceful.
Once they were pretty much asleep I stood up, touching my hand to Pema's shoulder to keep watch outside, making sure that no one was going to attempt an attack on the island. The skies were clear which made it easy for me to watch the skies, standing on the roof for a better vantage point but I had a sneaking feeling that the trap wasn't meant for the air-bender family, but for Korra and the others. Inhaling the night air I looked across the water with worried eyes, gripping my fists tightly at my side.
"Stay safe, Korra."
