"Arianna if you are gonna find a car, hurry it up. Unlike some little shits I don't have all day." A gruff and angry sounding voice yelled from the cab of a beaten up old pickup. The words enticed a chuckle from the young woman picking her way around the junkyard. She had black hair formed into twin pigtails so it didn't get tangled up in the rusting and twisted metal that were the scrapped cars. Her clothes included a tan work jumpsuit that she could afford to get dirty and avoid getting her pale skin sliced up.
Arianna knew the 'elderly' man, if you could really call the grumpy veteran that, wasn't going to do anything. So she took her time letting her silvery eyes drift from car to car trying to find something she could work on. It was one of the rare opportunities that Rex, the junkyard owner, was letting her have a car free of charge. If working on his car without charging was considered free. So she was gonna make the most out of this and find the best car in this rust heap.
The woman loved cars. It was something that helped put her life back on track, or rather something James used to keep her dog tired enough to not be loose on the streets. The old man seemed to have nothing better to do with his time than practically beat the 17 year old at the time with as much car knowledge as there was available. When she wasn't working at the vet's garage she was fiddling with a project car which she had finished her last one a month ago and had even sold it for a nice price.
However most of these cars were beyond repair. Nothing but rust and torn metal. Too many parts taken from them to be worth fixing.
She was just about to call it quits and get the vintage beetle from the front when a glimmer of yellow caught her eye. She couldn't make out what it was and the paint was chipped and faded but it drew her attention. She slowly and carefully made her way down one of the rows and was lucky to find that it was on the ground with no other car on top of it. She began brushing dead leaves and things off the top and hood. It was a slightly older model of a lamborghini Diablo.
She looked it over for a moment finding the outside was covered in scrapes and spots of rust, long lines of bent metal. The passenger door had a large dent in it with it's mirror barely hanging on. The hood had been bent in and there was a long stretch of paint that had been scraped off in whatever traffic accident the Diablo had been in but the car looked overall like it wouldn't be impossible to restore with a few months of hard work. The real question was: were the parts all there
She opened the driver door to the driver's side watching as it smoothly moved upward to see the inside wasn't actually that bad. Some leaves and dirt but the seats weren't cracked or so the car must have been well taken care of. She looked more, seeing that everythings was there. No missing gages or paneling. The only thing that was off was that the steering wheel seemed to have been replaced with a metal one that didn't have the bull on it.
Arianna seated herself in the car to find that the leather in it was soft and didn't have the annoying sound that cheap leather had when it was sat on. "Oh baby, someone must have really loved you." She smiled, patting the dust and dirt off the center of the wheel. A strange face looking logo looked back at her but she couldn't really place the thing so she instead looked around the interior for hopefully a set of keys that came with the poor thing. She could only be so incredibly lucky to find them.
As if the universe was reading her mind when she moved her foot back, she heard the sound of a metal jingling in the floorboard. There in the floorboard were two black keys, once again not sporting the bull, but the boxy looking frowny face. Arianna picked up the keys that were an exact copy of each other and hoped that the car would start.
Turning the key, she heard a single click and nothing more. She retried with the same result. Well that was a bust. I could have been the battery had died or that the starter was on the fritz. Hopefully it was the first, since it was only a couple hundred dollars as compared to the starter.
Even if it was...the car was free it would give her more money to play with. It wasn't a bad deal. The car she had just sold off went for more than what she was expecting. She had the money.
Who was she kidding, if Arianna didn't bring this car home her best friend would have a freaking cow. Hell James would kill her for passing up this car when it was free.
Ari leaned over and pulled the latch that allowed the hood to pop open enough for her to open it.
The woman stepped out of the car letting the wing door glide back into place and made her way to the front. A cursory look under the hood showed some of the hoses and wires were stripped and torn, strange fluids and dirt covered the parts however everything seemed to be in place and as far as her eyes could tell without getting in and starting it up it shouldn't be that much work. Her eyes caught one of the tubes that had come slightly loose dripping a viscous blue fluid at a steady pace. She didn't know what it was but something in the back of her mind made her feel like it needed to tighten immediately. She pulled one of her rags out of her back pocket and began wiping up the fluid before using the rag to push the tubing back into place. It wasn't a permanent fix but it would stop the leaking for now. The woman looked at the fluid covered rag before she shrugged and stuffed it back into her pocket.
She pulled her phone snapping a few pictures of the car before brushing her fingers over the hood as she passed by. A tingle of electricity leapt to her passing fingers making her pause to look back at the car. Nothing seemed different but she had been sure she had felt a thrum under her fingertips.
"Old Man, pull around her I found the one I want." She smiles as her eyes turn back to the yellow lamborghini. "Just you wait Diablo, we'll have you racing down main street in no time."
The beat up old truck had just pulled past her. The trailer that was attached to it clanging ominously in the empty junkyard. From the cab of the truck came an aged man. He had skin that was pot marked with aged and patches of red on his face. Thick eyebrows made his naturally unapproachable expression even more severe. His once black hair was cut short with a snowy sprinkling of white here and there. The hair on his face matched his head but it didn't quite meet in the middle as a large scar cut down his chin and slightly into his throat.
James was by no means a small man standing even slouched slightly much taller than her petite size.
"Which one ya pick?" The man practically growled at her. She knew he wasn't mad at her but it seemed angry was the man's default tone with her. Lord, knows she earned every bit of it too. She patted the Diablo as he came over to inspect it. "Got the keys or do we need ta replace that too?" The young woman silently held up the keys with a smug look.
"It won't turn on but all the parts seem to be there and most of the outside damage is cosmetic. Not a lot of inside damage."
The old man huffed. "Looks like you scored yourself a deal, princess."
Arianna smiled at the old man. Had any other person besides James ever tried to call her that she would have knocked them into next week but princess had been the only thing James referred to her as when he was in a good mood. It made her happy that he approved her choice.
She knew he approved without him having to say anything as he began working to lower the trailer. She grabbed the tow line and walked it to the undercarriage checking to see if it had rusted out as she hooked the cable to the front axle.
James, even though he knew she had done this more times than she could count, checked her work before beginning to winch up the lamborghini slowly.
"You got your work cut out for you." He gave a whistle as he watched the beaten up car all the way to the end of the trailer. "Might come around and help you every so often."
The girl laughed as she climbed into the truck with him. Neither had noticed a beaten up red lamborghini under the different doors and car pieces. As they drove away taking with them it's other half.
