A/N: I've changed Harrison to Hayden and Daisy to Marigold, because I feel like the older and more traditional names will fit the story and the characterisation better then what I had been using.
A/N 2: Lots of things are changing about this story because I have developed a lot as a writer and as a person since I first started writing this story in 2015 (wasn't I shocked to realised how long ago I started this thing?). It is because of this that what used to be chapter four has been split into chapters six and seven and I was able to take what was only two very small paragraphs and turn it into chapter five. I don't know how many more chapters will be added to just the first part of this story before we get to Hogwarts, but what I do know is that there will be changes to the Hogwarts portion of this story.
Chapter 7: Consequences of ResponsibilityWith Marigold sleeping peacefully, Hayden went to Dudley's second bedroom so that he could get the single mattress that had been removed from Dudley's bed before he broke it. He could sleep on the floor, having done so for the last four years in the cupboard under the stairs, but he could turn his bed into a sot play area during the day so Marigold wasn't always confined to her crib.
Dragging the mattress out of the second bedroom and into Marigold's took a little manoeuvring since the corridor wasn't very wide and he couldn't turn it very easily as he wasn't very strong. but, with a little tugging and heaving, he got the mattress into Marigold's room and laid it down in the corner of the room where's he placed his bags which meant that the end of the mattress ended up under the window.
Hesitating, indecisive for a moment, Hayden looked around the room before he sighed and grabbed the note book that Petunia used to keep updated on what Marigold was running low on. Turning to a clean page, Hayden started methodically going through the room to check what supplies Marigold had and what he was going to need to buy. As it was Wednesday, and Petunia had kept on top of Marigold's supplies even if she hadn't kept on top of her personal care, she was fine for nappies, powder, wipes, clothes, cleaning powder and conditioner. He would have to go shopping on Saturday to get more wipes and powder, but everything else would last until the next week. He hadn't checked the baby powder or the jars of baby food, which was kept in 'Marigold's kitchen cupboard but he knew that her food was stocked up and would last a while longer.
While he'd been going through the supplies, Hayden had also rearranged them to how he preferred to keep them stored – moving everything down to lower shelves so he didn't have to stand on steps to reach anything.
Marigold's room had a dresser stocked full of clothes, a changing table which was currently closed up and resting against the side of the dresser, her crib and then the double built in the wardrobe. The wardrobe was where the majority of Marigold's supplies were kept, the nappies, powder, wipes, cleaning powder and conditioner were kept to the left side, separated by purposes. The nappies, powder and wipes shared one shelf, while the cleaning powder and conditioner was on the shelf below that with the laundry basket tucked underneath.
In the middle of the wardrobe was the various blankets owned by Marigold, separated by size: the swaddle blankets, the blankets for her crip and then the ones which would fit a standard size bed. There were more blankets than Marigold would ever use, and the standard size blankets were currently too big for it to be safe for her to be used. This section of the wardrobe was also where the two spare quilts (which would fit the toddler bed), three spare quilts that Dudley wouldn't use anymore as he'd moved to a small-double, plus three covers and sheets, eight pillows and four throw pillows. With all the bedding in the wardrobe, Hayden wouldn't have to buy any bedding for Marigold.
The final section of the wardrobe was currently empty but for the hangers which were waiting for clothes. Once Marigold moved into sizes for ages 3-4, he'd start hanging up her dresses and a perhaps some of her shirts and jumpers. Once he had the time, he would move his own clothes into that section as well since there wasn't space for his clothes in the dresser even though there was only a small pile.
Briefly checking on Marigold to make sure he was okay, Hayden headed down to the kitchen where he began cooking the Dursley's dinner while doing the inventory of what Marigold had in her cupboard. For the Dursleys Hayden had been ordered to make slow cooked stake, onion and mushrooms, pasta with a garlic and cheese source. Shifting through Marigold's cupboard, Hayden frowned when he frowned there was enough powder for two weeks if he stuck to the current schedule of two bottles a day with the third meal being one of the pots of baby food. Then there was the baby food itself, there was enough for twelve meals. He wouldn't be buying them again, as it would be cheaper to buy the raw ingredients and puree it himself.
With the Dursley's food cooking, Hayden returned up the stairs as one of the things on his chore list for the day was to clean Dudley's room and the other boy was currently in the living room with Petunia. As he picked up dirty laundry, returned toys to their correct place, placed food scrapes in the bin and stripped Dudley's bed, Hayden picked up and hid any change or notes that he found lying around. He'd sown a small pocket into the inside of his trousers so that he could hide the money that he found as he cleaned.
Half way through cleaning the room Vernon came home, half an hour early. He didn't panic with Vernon's return because the man was early which meant he still had time to get things done, but he did slip silently down the stairs to check the food before returning to finish Dudley's room.
Hayden had just finished cleaning Dudley's room and returning the cleaning supplies the upstairs airing cupboard, when Marigold woke up and started whimpering. Not wanting her to start crying and draw Vernon's attention, Hayden hurried into the nursery and approached the crib. Marigold fell quiet when she realised that she wasn't alone in her room anymore.
"Hay, did you have a good nap?" Hayden smiled softly as he lifted Marigold out of her crip. Lifting her as he did, allowed him to feel that her nappy needed changing which told him which of the three problems had woken her up: nappy, tummy or attention. "Let's get you all cleaned up and into a new nappy."
After he carefully walked over to the dresser, Hayden shifted Marigold so that she was propped on his hip so that he a hand free to pull up the changing table and lock the legs into place. Before he put Marigold onto the table, Hayden placed his hand on the middle of the table and pushed his weight through it to make sure that the legs had secured properly since he didn't want the table collapsing under Marigold.
Only once he was sure it was secure did he place Marigold onto the table. With swift fingers, he undid each of the pop buttons on Marigold's onesie.
"First we pop the buttons…" Hayden began singing once more when he noticed that Marigold had started whimpering again. The books he'd read said that singing and speaking would help stop crying, and choosing educational song would hopefully help make it easier for Marigold to pick up on the steps of getting change when it was finally time for her to do that by herself.
He knew that there were children his own age who still struggled to put their own trousers on the correct way, children who were Dudley's age who couldn't tie their shoe laces or do their hair. He didn't want Marigold to reach her fifth birthday and not be able to get changed independently, and he wanted her to be able to at least put a comb through her hair and tie it in a pony tail.
When he got to removing Marigold's nappy, it was to discover that she hadn't actually finished. Her uncomfortable nappy had first been for the poo, but the wee was either the longest wee an infant had ever produced or she'd done it in several stages. Hayden waited until Marigold really had finished, before he picked her up and placed her on his hip since he now had to remove the cover on the changing table before he finished changing her. He didn't care that any residue waste was getting on his shirt.
Placing the nappy off to one side for the moment, Hayden used his free arm to remove the soiled sheet from the table, bundling it up tight to contain any run off, before he whipped the under-table to make sure nothing had gotten through. With the table clean, Hayden placed another sheet over the top, before gentle placing Marigold down.
Soft baby wipes in hand, Hayden carefully cleaned up Marigold, at one point lifting her legs to make sure he got everything. When she was all cleaned up, he patted her dry with a soft cloth and used a small amount of baby powder. He had some unpleasant memories of the nappy rash he'd gotten in the weeks before he'd stopped wearing a nappy altogether because Petunia either left him in a wet nappy or had left him dap when she put a new one on.
Keeping a close eye on Marigold who was now happily exploring her toes, Hayden removed the cover of her old nappy which he rolled up and placed next to the changing mat's sheet. Since he didn't know how long this inside had been used for, he placed it into the laundry before grabbing a new inside and cover.
"Well then, let's get you dress again, shell we?" Hayden asked Marigold as he put the cover over the nappy.
Marigold just giggled as she continued to try and pull on her toes.
With the nappy ready, he slipped the back of it under her bottom before pulling one leg down will tickling the bottom of her feet which goat a breathy giggle. Then, he pulled down the leg Marigold was so fascinated with while also tickling that foot so that she wouldn't get upset.
Once the nappy was on, it was just a matter of putting her into a new onesie. Just as he did when he was undressing her, Hayden sang softly.
Knowing he was running out of time and needed to go and sort out the Dursley's dinner, Hayden placed Marigold onto his hip once more while placed the dirtying changing sheet and nappy into a towel, along with the contents of the laundry basket. As he did Marigold's washing every day there was never a large build up.
Holding the towel wrapped contents in one hand and carefully supporting Marigold on one hip, he carefully went down the stairs and into the kitchen. Placing Marigold into the soft play area which Hayden was sure that Petunia would order him to remove from the communal area soon, and he would have to argue to keep it for a while until Marigold was older. He placed the towel in the laundry room to be dealt with after dinner.
Although he knew that Marigold would soon be making noise for more food, he had to get the Dursley's dinner on the table before Vernon's patients ran out. It was a balancing act he was going to have to learn how to handle – putting the needs of Marigold and the wants of the Dursleys on a scale to decide which needed to be addressed as a priority. Either way, which ever one he decided to place as a secondary, would put him in danger of being punished by Vernon.
While setting the table, Hayden fried up the onions and mushrooms that he'd prepared earlier while also finishing up the stakes by frying them off in a separate pan since Dudley didn't like it when the stake was fried in the same pan as the vegetables. Once everything was cooked, he dished it out making sure to have the three different portion sizes just how each Dursley liked it.
"Dinner's ready," Hayden softly called from the doorway to the open living room where the Dursleys had been pointedly ignoring him.
"About time boy," Vernon grumbled as he got up. "Your late."
Hayden said nothing as he went back into the kitchen. While he waited for the kettle to boil for Marigold's bottle, he cleaned up what he'd used to cook the Dursley's dinner and cleaned the sides. By the time he'd done that, the kettle had stopped and the water inside had cooled a little so he wouldn't have to run the bottle under the cold tap for long to make sure he didn't accidently burn Marigold when he went to feed her.
When he went to pick Marigold up, bottle in hand, she actually clapped excitedly at the sight of it. Hayden chuckled softly, ignoring the look he could feel from Petunia at his back. Resting Marigold's head against his elbow so that she was being held up at an angle and was supported, he brought the bottle to her mouth. Immediately after placing the tip of the bottle in her mouth, Marigold started sucking hard – clearly, she had been hungry.
After only a few mouthfuls, Marigold slowing, starting to grow disinterested in what she was drinking. Seeing this, Hayden shook the bottle slightly, which encouraged Marigold to continue drinking. He would have to remove her completely from the formula soon if she was growing bored with the milk.
When the bottle was empty, Hayden shifted Marigold so that she was resting chest to chest to him and started patting and rubbing her back gentle until she finally burped. It took only a moment for him to feel the wet residue seeping into his shirt, so he carefully pulled Marigold back and whipped her mouth before carrying her back up the stairs.
Instead of placing her into the crib, Hayden put Marigold into the soft play area where she could grab hold of the different soft toys she had and he'd be able to read her some stories and play some games with her once he'd changed his shirt. Although he didn't really care that his shirt was currently dirty with multiple body fluids, he didn't want to transfer those stains onto all of Marigold's lovely toys.
Once he was sure Marigold couldn't roll out of the soft play area or be suffocated by any of the toys, Hayden headed back down the stairs where he had to clean up the table after the Dursleys, as well as wash the cups and plates.
With his chores done, he could return to looking after Marigold and himself for the rest of the night.
