Waking in a groggy state Winry rubbed at her face and groaned softly before opening her eyes. Taking in the room and blinking away the last of her sleep, Winry's memory came crashing back and she sat up swiftly and regretted it. She clenched her eyes shut as her head spun so she clutched at it with one hand as the other gripped the back of the couch cushion. Squeezing the cushion she pulled on it to help rotate her body and set her feet on the floor before she stood on shaky legs.
Noticing that the TV was off and she was alone in the room, she took a moment to stand and let her legs stabilize beneath her before she shuffled to the door. Glancing out into the hall and seeing no one she leaned against the door frame and listened, she thought she heard talking in the kitchen. A louder sound drew her attention though and had her looking to her left where the door at the end that had been ajar, now stood fully open.
It sounded like a scream. Winry closed her eyes and squeezed her hands into fists, it sounded like Lee. Her face grimaced at the thought of leaving him, but she couldn't. Marlene might have gotten away, Mark was dead, but Lee was still here and she needed to try. He had come back for her and it wasn't in her to leave anyone behind.
Looking to the right again and not hearing anyone moving in the kitchen Winry went left, away from the front door and deeper into the house. Walking past the stairs and in through the open doors she looked around and saw she was in an empty room, the only light from the hall behind her shined on a metal door that stood in front of her. Walking towards the door she could hear the scream again louder this time. The door was open enough for her to squeeze through easily and she looked back into the rest of the house through the gap before she turned forward and saw a set of stairs leading down.
A soft glow of a light showed the bottom of the stairs and a puddle of moving water. Making her way down Winry could hear what sounded like water leaking, when she made it to the bottom she could easily see the room as lights were mounted to the wall or hung from the ceiling making the room bright in some areas, but heavily shadowed in others. Winry saw shelves lining the walls filled with bottles and boxes, a few skulls and other miscellaneous items filled every available space. Tables were haphazardly placed throughout the room and were filled with tools, weapons, and scraps of materials.
Around the tables with no discernable pattern, tall hand made shelves stood and held jars or things someone would collect, everything looked old and rusted, though it wasn't a surprise as she eyed the many leaking pipes. The water sprayed in some areas while others just drained entirely or dripped slowly. Chains hung from the ceiling along with other equipment, some beams held hooks and parts for things Winry couldn't fathom.
Finally taking the step into the water it quickly flooded her sneakers and soaked her jeans up her calf. Glancing at the water while taking a tentative step making sure she wouldn't trip, the water was so dirty she couldn't see if anything was underneath it. A loud sob made her head jerk up and she nearly jumped back on the stairs, but it definitely sounded like Lee to her this time.
Winry sloshed through the water, passing by chains and tools, the tables made an obvious path forward. When she was halfway into the room she saw a table and she lost her composer and started crying. Lee lay on the table with one bloodied arm where a bone was showing, his nose looked broken and he had bruising on his face. A hand came up to touch him before she instead put it to her mouth to try and stay quiet.
"Oh God Lee…"
Lee heard a soft sob of words and when he opened his eyes he almost yelled Winry's name when he saw her, he bit his lip to keep himself quiet. When she reached him he pleaded with wide eyes and a shaky voice, "Abby Abby, baby you need to get the restraints off of me. Listen…LOOK AT ME!" His last few words were spoken loudly and he closed his eyes and cursed softly before looking at Winry to see her nodding.
Tearing her eyes away from Lee and looking around at the tables Winry pawed at a few tools on a table, she found something flat to try and pry the metal off of Lee's wrists and ankles. When she came back and looked at his broken arm her lips trembled, the blood had dried in almost a black color in areas, his struggles had more blood pouring adding to the shades of red. The bone was so white and looked clean compared to the rest of where his arm was torn open from the break.
"Don't look at it, try my other arm, come on try." Lee coaxed her along and his voice forced her eyes away from his injured arm and she wiped a sleeve across her face before she started on the metal.
At first she did it gingerly to try and not hurt him worse, but when Lee cursed and demanded she 'just do it' she slammed the tool into the metal sides. The wood chipped, but the metal didn't seem to move, Winry noticed she had nicked his skin with the tool a few times as well.
"Shit" Winry whispered and stepped back using her free hand to push her hair that had fallen around her from her face and turned to look for another tool. After three more attempts and Lee wasn't free or even loose enough to slip out, he demanded she find something else and keep trying.
Winry and Lee's heads jerked to the stairs where they heard scraping metal and a light turned on. Ignoring Lee's soft protests that she not leave him, she went further into the room and hid around the left side. Ducking near a table and peeking around the corner of her hiding spot she saw black boots stomping down and then looked up to see the man from the shop. He didn't hesitate stepping into the water and made his way to Lee who started cursing at the other man loudly.
Ignoring Lee, the large man grabbed something sharp and started cutting at Lee's clothes. Lee screamed when he struggled and pulled on his broken arm, his breathing became heavy and he stilled when the blade was pointed at his face. The threat made before the man began looking for something else.
A yell at the top of the stairs had everyone down below look up, "Thomas! The girl's gone! Come help me look." Winry saw the man 'Thomas' throw his tools on a table before he walked through the water and started up the stairs. Lee started shaking and nearly sobbing again from being left alone.
Winry shakily stood from crouching and used the table she hid behind to pull herself up, her hand landed in something that was wet and squishy. She looked down and saw half of a body in a bloodied pink top and a short scream came out of her mouth before she could stop herself. Her clean hand came to her mouth to silence herself while the bloodied hand scrubbed on her jeans, she shut her eyes and back peddled into a shelf bumping it hard enough to make everything rattle.
When she opened her eyes again nearly hyperventilating into her hand she looked at the top half of what she now saw was Marlene. She was cut through her stomach, blood and guts having slid out, her spine slightly showing. Her mouth was stuck in a permanent scream, blood stained her lips and face.
A step on the stairs had her ripping her eyes from the body of her friend to see Thomas on the last step, his arms wide and hands pressed to each wall while he stared at her.
Lee tried to shout at him and get his attention, but Thomas's eyes never even glanced at the man on the table that he knew wouldn't be going anywhere. Winry and Thomas held eye contact and she didn't understand why he didn't move. He just stood there and looked into her eyes, he didn't look her over, he just stared into her eyes.
Swallowing hard, Winry finally broke eye contact by running left and followed a path into the room that seemed unending. She heard him in the water following and cried out, she was small and the water impeded her short stature. Seeing a narrow path between free standing shelves, she shoved between them and squeezed herself in and kept forcing her way in till the shelves narrowed and she couldn't go any further. Looking back she watched as Thomas easily shoved the shelves apart, items fell into the water or on other surfaces either shattering or making loud noises as they struck tables or other objects.
"No no no no-" she kept repeating the one word over and over like it would help. As he forced the next set of shelves to widen for his mass Winry sobbed and shoved boxes off the shelf to her right and began to squeeze through and to the other side. For once her small size worked in her favor. Falling into the water drenching herself she landed hard on her right wrist and cried out from the pain, using her left hand on the shelf she had climbed through to stand.
She heard Thomas slam the shelf next to him till it completely toppled over and leaned against a table, she screamed when he kicked it and shattered most of the standing shelf so he could climb over it to get at her.
Running again she pushed through cobwebs, chains, and tools all while cradling her right wrist to her chest and hearing him gain on her. A table blocked her way and she stopped when she realized that the room had ended finally, she spun in the water with her eyes wildly looking for anywhere to go. When she didn't hear him she stopped and looked the way she had come and again saw him just standing there and staring at her. They were both breathing hard, she trembled from fear and the cold water. To him she looked absolutely miserable.
He slowly stepped towards her with his hands up and out like you would with a spooked animal, her eyes went to his hands for a second before they came back to his eyes. She pressed her back into the table and shook her head no the closer he got, when he was close enough to grab her he did and she tried to jump to the side. His arms wrapped around her tightly trapping her side to his front, one arm around the upper part of her arms trapping her injured wrist to her chest and his other arm looped lower to trap her other arm from moving.
"NO! LET ME GO!" she screamed and kicked her legs uselessly, she wiggled and tried to force herself from his arms and he just held her effortlessly. When he tried to lower his head to hers she would try to force her head into his face, Thomas made what sounded like a humming sound deep in his throat sounding panicked and unsure, but she couldn't hear it over her screams for release.
Winry didn't know how long she struggled before she was panting hard and felt herself lose the energy to fight. Thomas just waited and held her, watching as she started crying harder. He felt her relax, though he refused to loosen his hold on her. People always tried to escape even when tired, too many times had he relaxed and then been attacked, like the man on the table who had struck him with the stick.
Bowing her head Winry sobbed out loud and gave a few more kicks, she felt his hand press her head to his chest, when she tried to push back he easily kept the pressure till she gave in. He kept her head there while he turned back the way they had come through. Thomas had a small issue when he climbed over where the shelving he had smashed to keep up with her, she tried to kick at shelves to make him drop her, but he didn't release her.
When they walked past Lee and he saw Winry trapped in the man's arms he cursed and spat, his struggles were weak and Thomas didn't even glance at him. The yells from the basement followed them up the stairs.
Thomas felt the woman in his arms start shuddering as she sobbed, he attempted to pet her wet hair, but she kept shaking her head. When they made it to the top of the stairs she tried to lift her legs to kick at the wall and he turned quickly so they were in the empty room before her feet made contact.
"Oh thank goodness Tommy you found her." Luda Mae held a hand to her chest and her worried gaze took in Winry's drenched state. "You best take her upstairs so we can get her dried off." Thomas nodded and made his way upstairs as she struggled more to make his climb difficult.
Winry stopped her kicking when they made it to the top of the stairs and he brought her to a room, she felt his hold loosen as he put her feet on the floor and he slowly let her go. Continuing to cradle her injured wrist to her chest she jumped backwards and nearly collapsed before catching herself, they stood there staring at each other where again he spread his arms wide with his hands out.
I'm not going to hurt you.
His posture screamed the unspoken words and the worried look in his eyes confused her. Luda Mae came into the room behind Thomas carrying what looked like a towel and some form of clothing. Winry's teeth chattered as she spoke, her loose hand clenched at the edge of her flannel, "What do you want with me? What did you do with Mark? Why did you-"
"Shhh child, first let's get you cleaned up and dry." Luda Mae spoke calmly and headed to a small room to the right and opened a door that showed a little bathroom; a tub and sink could be seen from the door.
Shaking where she stood Winry looked away from Luda Mae to Thomas and her mouth trembled. Her words came out choked, "I would like to leave." When Thomas shook his head no and made a distressed noise she cried out softly and bowed over slightly, her free arm pressed to her stomach. When Thomas took a step towards her she wailed out a 'no' before sliding her feet backward a few steps.
Luda Mae came out of the bathroom and tutted before she gently took Winry by the shoulders, her hands became firm when Winry resisted, but in the end the two went towards the bathroom.
"Tommy boy, wait outside." Luda Mae didn't wait for an answer before she shut the bathroom door and took in Winry's state. "My you look awful, let's get you a warm bath darlin'." As Luda Mae started the tub and worked on making it the perfect temperature Winry examined the bathroom.
It was simple with a little mirror and sink with a cabinet underneath, a toilet and the tub. Not a window in sight. Sniffling Winry stood exhausted, "Why am I not dead?" She questioned the older woman bluntly. Her eyelids felt heavy, the stress and run in the basement taking its toll on her body.
Seemingly surprised, Luda Mae turned to look at Winry as the tub filled and answered with a sweet smile, "You were so polite to my boy Tommy, I think you'll get along." Sensing the tub was near full she turned to stop the water and pointed to the items folded on the little sink, "I left you a towel and a nightgown, I don't have any undergarments, but we can figure that out tomorrow."
Before Winry could stop her Luda Mae told her to 'take her time' then left and shut the bathroom door, when it sounded like the bedroom door was shut Winry opened the bathroom door as quietly as she could. In the bedroom she saw that she was alone. The room had antique furniture in it and a decent part of one wall was boarded up and she assumed a window would be there. She also saw a door near the boards behind a bed and walked around it to try the door, it was locked.
Looking back to the door where she had been brought in she slowly made her way to the door and after taking a breath she opened it and she saw Thomas's back as he stood outside her door. Hearing the door open he turned and just looked at her, when she didn't move he made a grunting noise which prompted Winry to shut the door quickly. Stepping backwards she waited for him to come in, when he didn't she took in the room again.
A dresser stood against one wall and a floor length mirror stood next to it, a wooden chair was near the decently sized bed. The walls were colored a light blue while the rest of the furniture looked to be white, though everything had a good coating of dust on it so Winry didn't know if they could be grey.
Eyeing the bedroom door again she then looked back at the bathroom, she was miserable in her wet clothes, but didn't know if she could bathe knowing that anyone could come in at any time. With slow steps though she made her way into the bathroom and shut the door, she noticed a little lock on the bathroom door and used it. Though against Thomas it wouldn't stand a chance.
Slowly she took off her clothes, careful of her wrist. Taking off her wet jeans with one hand had been annoying, but she wasn't about to ask for help from anyone here. Winry climbed into the tub and found the water still warm despite her wandering the bedroom and looking for a way out.
Sitting in the water helped warm her and felt nice on her wrist. After sitting there for a short while she cried and was surprised she had anymore tears left. Her eyes felt strained and a headache was beginning to pound in her skull. Looping her good arm around her legs she pulled them to her chest and rested her forehead on her knees.
When she felt herself calm down she quickly sloshed her long hair in the water and got out not wanting to be naked and even more vulnerable. Drying off her body was awkward, but she did it quickly and put on the yellow floral nightgown and was grateful it went past her knees. Not having underwear was disturbing, but she couldn't get to her bag and didn't want anything like that from these people.
"Ok, find a weapon." Winry muttered to herself and checked under the sink and found nothing, she looked through the dresser and found only old clothes, nothing was under the bed either. She had nothing. Defeated, she eyed the bedroom door again and decided to see if Thomas had left, when she turned the handle and found it wouldn't move, she realized they had locked her in the room. Leaning her head against the door she wanted to cry, but it seemed her tears had finally dried up. It didn't stop a choking noise from escaping her mouth as she suppressed a sob.
Moving from the door she looked at the bed and headed towards it, her hand pulled the dusty top blanket off the pillows and all the way down to the end of the bed and sat on the mattress pulling the dust free sheet over her lower half. Then alone and feeling defeated she mimicked her earlier position in the tub and pulled her knees to her chest and laid her forehead on her knees and waited to learn what would happen to her.
