Rose goes to sit by one of the beds, looking at one of the gas mask people. Jack settles down in a chair.

"Why are they all wearing gas masks?"

"They're not. Those masks are flesh and bone."

" How was your con supposed to work?"

"Simple enough. Find some harmless piece of space junk... let the nearest Time Agent track it back to Earth. Convince him it's valuable, name a price. When he's put 50% upfront, oops! A German bomb falls on it, destroying it forever. He never gets to see what he's paid for. Never knows he's been had. I buy him a drink with his own money, and we discuss dumb luck. The perfect self-cleaning con."

"Yeah. Perfect." the doctor says sarcastically

"The London Blitz is great for self-cleaners, Pompeii's nice if you want to make a vacation of it though, but you've got to set your alarm for volcano day."

He laughs at his joke. The Doctor merely looks at him. Jack's laughter dies away.

"Getting a hint of disapproval."

"Take a look around the room. This is what your "harmless piece of space junk" did."

"It was a burnt-out medical transporter, it was empty."

The Doctor looks darkly at him and walks off.

"Rose."

"We getting out of here?"

" We're going upstairs."

Rose follows him. Jack gets up and calls after him.

"I even programmed the flight computer so it wouldn't land on anything living, I harmed no one! I don't know what's happening here, but believe me, I had nothing to do with it."

"I'll tell you what's happening. You forgot to set your alarm clock. It's volcano day."

A siren goes off in the distance.

"What's that?"

"The all-clear."

"I wish."

He leaves the ward. Rose and Jack follow him.

Rose and Jack run down a corridor looking for the Doctor. shouting for the doctor

They dash past a flight of stairs. The Doctor pops his head around the bannister.

"Have you got a blaster?"

Rose and Jack skid to a halt and backtrack.

"Sure!"

They run up the stairs and find themselves standing outside a door.

"The night your space junk landed, someone was hurt. This was where they were taken."

"What happened?"

"Let's find out. Get it open."

Jack grins and points a blaster at the door. The Doctor stands back, beside Rose.

"What's wrong with your sonic screwdriver?"

" Nothing."

Jack's blaster cuts a perfectly square hole around the lock of the door and it squeaks open.

"Sonic blaster, 51st century. Weapon Factories of Villengard?"

" You've been to the factories?"

" Once."

"Well, they are gone now. Destroyed. The main reactor went critical. Vapourized the lot. "

" Like I said, once. There's a banana grove there, now. I like bananas. Bananas are good."

He smiles pleasantly at Jack and enters the room. Rose goes up to Jack.

"Nice blast pattern."

"Digital."

"Squareness gun."

"Yeah."

" I like it."

She goes into the room. Jack laughs, then follows her

The Doctor switches a light on. The room looks as though it has been vandalised. The window is broken and there is stuff all over the floor.

" What d'you think?"

"Something got out of here... "

"Yeah. And?"

"Something powerful. Angry."

"Powerful and angry."

Jack enters a room off the side. The floors and walls are covered with a child's drawings. There are a few toys on the floor and a little bed in the corner.

"A child? I suppose this explains "mummy"."

"How could a child do this?"

The Doctor plays a tape of Doctor Constantine talking to the Child.

"Doctor, I've heard this voice before."

"Me too."

"Mummy?"

"Always, "are you my mummy?". Like he doesn't know."

"Mummy?"

"Why doesn't he know?"

"Are you there, mummy? Mummy?"

The reels of the tape spin.

"Mummy? Please, mummy? Mummy?"

The Doctor is pacing around the room.

"Doctor?"

"Can you sense it?"

"Sense what?"

"Coming out of the walls, can you feel it?"

"Mummy?"

The Doctor stops to look around at Rose and Jack.

"Funny little human brains, how do you get around in those things?"

"When he's stressed, he likes to insult species."

"Rose, I'm thinking."

"Cuts himself shaving, does half an hour in life forms he's cleverer than... "

"There are these children living rough around the bomb site. They come out during air-raids looking for food."

"Mummy, please?"

"Suppose they were there when this thing, whatever it was, landed?"

"It was a med-ship. It was harmless."

"Yes, you keep saying. "Harmless". Suppose one of them was affected, altered?"

"Altered how?"

"I'm here!"

"It's afraid. Terribly afraid, and powerful. It doesn't know it yet, but it will do. It's got the power of a god, and I just sent it to its room."

There is a loud, crackling noise filling the room

"Doctor..."

"I'm here. Can't you see me?"

"What's that noise?"

"End of the tape. It ran out about 30 seconds ago."

"I'm here, now. Can't you see me?"

"I sent it to its room. This is its room."

He spins around and the Child is standing by the tape machine.

"Are you my mummy?" (Cocks his head to one side, considering Rose)? "Mummy?"

" Doctor?"

"Okay... on my signal... make for the door. Now!"

He violently produces banana and points it threateningly at the Child. The Doctor grins and produces Jack's sonic blaster, blasting a square hole in the wall.

" Go! Now! Don't drop the banana!"

" Why not?!"

Good source of potassium!

The three of them find themselves back in a corridor. The Child approaches them from inside the room.

" Give me that!"

" Are you my mummy?"

Jack points the blaster at the wall, and it rebuilds itself, blocking the Child out.

"Nice switch."

" It's from the Groves of Villengard. I thought it was appropriate."

"There's really a banana grove in the heart of Villengard and you did that?"

" Bananas are good."

The Child thumps the wall from the other side, cracking it.

"Doctor!"

"Come on!"

They rush down a short flight of stairs and another corridor, before they encounter all the patients bursting out of the ward calling "mummy". They hastily backtrack, but they find the gasmask people coming from that direction too. They find themselves back at the point where they started, where the Child is breaking through the wall.

'It's keeping us here so it can get at us."

"It's controlling them?"

"It is them. It's every living thing in this hospital."

"Okay. This can function as a sonic blaster, a sonic cannon, and a triple-enfolded sonic disrupter. Doc, what you got?"

The Doctor takes the sonic screwdriver out of his pocket, but Jack is not looking as he is too busy brandishing his sonic device at the gasmask people.

"A sonic, er... oh, never mind"

."What?"

The Doctor turns to face the other group of gasmask people, switching on his sonic screwdriver.

"It's sonic, okay? Let's leave it at that."

"Disrupter? Cannon? What?"

"It's sonic! Totally sonic! I am sonic-ed up!"

"A sonic what?!"

"SCREWDRIVER! "

Jack spins around. At that moment, the Child finally manages to punch through the wall. He begins to climb through the hole. Rose grabs onto Jack's wrist and makes him point the sonic blaster at the floor. The Doctor looks to his right a catches a glimpse of Abby with the facemask walking toward them.

"Going down!" says Rose

She blasts a hole in the floor. They all fall in a messy heap on the floor of the ward below. Jack hurriedly activates the digital rewind, closing the hole so they cannot be followed.

"Doctor, are you okay?"

"Could've used a warning...!"

"Ugh, the gratitude. maybe Abby had the better idea of staying in the tardis"

They get up and brush themselves off.

"Who has a sonic screwdriver?"

"I do!"

"Light!"

"Who looks at a screwdriver and thinks "ooh, this could be a little more sonic"?"

"What, you've never been bored?"

"There's gotta be a light switch!"

" Never had a long night? Never had a lot of cabinets to put up?"

Rose finally finds a switch and turns the lights on. All the gas-mask people lying in the beds sit up and start calling "mummy"

"Door."

They rush to the door as the patients start getting out of bed. Finding it locked, Jack tries to blast it open but his sonic blaster doesn't work.

"Damn it!"

He steps back, allowing the Doctor to use his sonic screwdriver instead. He whacks the sonic blaster angrily.

"It's the special features, they drain the battery."

"The battery?!"

The Doctor opens the door and they dash through it.

"That's so lame."

The Doctor slams the door shut behind them and locks it with his sonic screwdriver.

"I was gonna send for another one, but somebody's gonna blow up the factory."

He glares at the Doctor.

"Oh, I know, the first day I met him, he blew my job up. That's practically how he communicates."

" Okay, that door should hold it for a bit."

t"the door?! The wall didn't stop it!"

"Well, it's gotta find us first! Come on, we're not done yet! Assets, assets!:

"Well, I've got a banana, and at a pinch you could put up some shelves."

" Window... "

"Barred, sheer drop outside. Seven stories."

"And no other exits." rose says

" Well, the assets conversation went in a flash, didn't it?"

The Doctor turns and eyes him for a moment, then looks at Rose.

"So, where'd you pick this one up, then?"

"Doctor... "

"She was hanging from a barrage balloon, I had an invisible spaceship. I never stood a chance"

Rose looks ever so slightly uncomfortable

"Okay, one, we want to get out of here. Two, we can't get out of here. Have I missed anything?"

Rose looks in Jack's direction.

"Yeah... Jack just disappeared."

The Doctor spins around to see Jack's empty chair.

Rose approaches the Doctor who is now sitting down and puts her hand casually on the back of his chair.

"Okay, so he's vanished into thin air. Why is it always the great looking ones who do that?"

The Doctor peers up at her, giving her a look.

" I'm making an effort not to be insulted."

" I mean... men."

" Okay. Thanks. That really helped."

An old radio springs to life and Jack's voice transmits through it.

"Rose? Doctor? Can you hear me?"

They both hurry over to the radio, the Doctor picking it up.

"I'm back on my ship."

"Used the emergency teleport. Sorry I couldn't take you."

The Doctor, in some confusion, holds the wires that have been ripped out of the radio.

"It's security-keyed to my molecular structure. I'm working on it, hang in there."

"How're you speaking to us?"

"Om-Com. I can call anything with a speaker grille."

"Now there's a coincidence."

"What is?"

"The Child can Om-Com too."

"It can?"

"Anything with a speaker grille. Even the TARDIS phone."

"What, you mean the Child can phone us?"

"And I can hear you. Coming to find you. Coming to fiiiiind you."

"Doctor, can you hear that?"

" Loud and clear."

"I'll try to block out the signal. Least I can do. "

"Coming to find you, mummy!"

"Remember this one, Rose?"

Glenn Miller's "Moonlight Serenade" plays through the radio. Rose looks ever so slightly uncomfortable as the Doctor turns to look at her questioningly.

"Our song."

The Doctor nods, but it seems as though he doesn't like this. Rose shifts from foot to foot, smiling embarrassedly.

Rose shuffles around in the wheel chair, bored. The radio still plays "Moonlight Serenade". The buzzing of the sonic screwdriver in the background. Rose spins the wheel chair around in the Doctor's direction.

"What you doing?"

"atrying to set up a resonation pattern in the concrete. Loosen the bars."

"You don't think he's coming back, do ya?"

"Wouldn't bet my life. "

"Why don't you trust him?"

" Why do you?"

"Saved my life. Bloke-wise, that's up there with flossing. "

The Doctor does not answer. Rose looks at him for a moment.

"i trust him 'cos he's like you. Except with dating and dancing."

The Doctor turns around and taks a deep breath

"Rose theres something i need to tell you"

"What"

"Its you sister"

"Yeah she ok, have u somehow heard from her"

"No i have heard from her, not for a while.now... well the thing is... she didnt go back to the tardis."

"Ok so where is she"

"Shes umm.. shes ummm. Shes upstairs on one of the bed"

"What do u mean upstairs, those things are upstairs" Rose asks cnfused.

"We got separated at one point and she was looking for me and came across the little boy standing outside the house i was in and um.."

"Noo...No!"

"She walked towards him and could hear him calling mummy, She went to help, she touched his shoulder. Itried to stop her i did i just was not quick enough."

"Soo shes one of them.. them things...is there anything we can do" Rose says with tears running down her face.

"I dont know.. im she told me to tell you she love you. Im sorry"

"Its not your fault. What are you gonna do"

"Im not sure, she asked me to fix this and then leave with you but im not sure i can leave her."

"Doctor..." Rose says

"Barrage balloon?"a thought came to the Doctor

"What?"

"You were hanging from a barrage balloon."

"Oh... yeah. About two minutes after you left me. Thousands of feet above London, middle of a German air-raid, Union Jack all over my chest."

The Doctor raises his eyebrows.

"I've travelled with a lot of people, but you're setting new records for jeopardy-friendly although your sister was a close second". He goes back to examining her hands.

"Is this you dancing? 'Cos I've got notes."

"Hanging from a rope a thousand feet above London. Not a cut, not a bruise."

He shows her her own hands.

"Yeah, I know. Captain Jack fixed me up.."

"Oh, we're calling him Captain Jack now, are we?"

"Well, his name's Jack and he's a captain... "

" He's not really a captain, Rose"

"D'you know what I think? I think you're experiencing Captain envy."

The Doctor half nods, not denying this. He sits down and looks deep in thought.

"You thinking about Abby?i know you care for her.'

"Noo... Nooo... Nooooooooooooo"

"Yeah Ueah"

"Most people notice when they've been teleported. You guys looked deep in coversation. Sorry about the delay. I had to take the nav-com offline to override the teleport security."

Jack says whilst they look up in surprise, and somehow, they are standing in Jack's ship. They look around at their surroundings.

"Uou spent ten minutes overriding your own protocols? Maybe you should remember whose ship it is."

"Oh, I do. She was gorgeous."

Rose smiles.

"Like I told her, be back in five minutes."

He ducks into a compartment underneath the console.

"This is a Chula ship." The Doctor says

"Yeah, just like that medical transporter. Only, this one is dangerous."

The Doctor snaps his fingers, and his hand is instantly surrounded by nanogenes.

"They're what fixed my hands up! Jack called 'em, um..."

"Nanobots? Nanogenes."

"Nanogenes, yeah."

"Sub-atomic robots. There's millions of them in here, see? Burned my hand on the console when we landed - all better now. They activate when the bulk head's sealed. Check you out for damage, fix any physical flaws.",

Rose beams. The Doctor banishes the nanogenes with a wave of his hand and turns to Jack.

"Take us to the crash site. I need to see your space junk."

"As soon as I get the nav-com back online."

The Doctor looks mildly annoyed.

"Make yourself comfortable. Carry on with whatever it was you two was talking about.looked serious"

"We were talking about Abby, Rose' sister"

"Where is this famous Abby heard slot but not seen much"

"Shes um back at that hospital"

"With all those thing, whyd you leave her"

"Coz she is one of those things, she got infected"

The Doctor looks at her, rather apologetically.

"Im sorry Rose"

"I know"

Rose is sitting talking to Jack. Jack is in the pilot seat - the Doctor is sitting some way behind Rose, not taking part in the conversation.

"So, you used to be a Time Agent, now you're trying to con them?"

" If it makes me sound any better, it's not for the money."

"For what?"

"Woke up one day when I was working for them , found they'd stolen two years of my memories. I'd like them back."

"They stole your memories?"

"Two years of my life. No idea what I did."

The Doctor watches him.

"Your friend over there doesn't trust me. And for all I know... he's right not to."

The computer bleeps.

"Okay, we're good to go."

The Doctor looks up.

"Crash site?"

The Doctor, Rose and Jack walk over the rail station near the bombsite. They peer over the barbed wire.

"There it is. (Spots Algy pacing up and down). Ay, they've got Algy on duty. Must be important."

"We've gotta get past."

"The words 'distract the guard' head in my general direction."

"I don't think that'd be such a good idea."

"Don't worry... I can handle it."

"i've got to know Algy quite well since I've been in town. Trust me. You're not his type. I'll distract him." Jack Walks away.

" Don't wait up."

And off he goes. Rose and the Doctor look at each other.

"Relax, he's a 51st century guy. He's just a bit more flexible when it comes to dancing."

"How flexible?"

"Well, by his time, you lot have spread out across half the galaxy."

"Meaning?"

"So many species, so little time... "

"What, that's what we do when we get out there? That's our mission? We seek new life, and... and... "

"Dance."

And he coughs, falling to his knees. Before the very eyes of Jack, Rose and the Doctor, his face transforms into a gas mask. Jack is horror-struck. The other soldiers begin to hurry over.

"Stay back!"

"You men! Stay away!" Jack orders

Rose and the Doctor rush over to Jack, and Algy - who is lying on the floor, lifeless. Rose stares down at him in shock.

"The effect's become air-borne. Accelerating."

"What's keeping us safe?"

"Nothing."

The air-raid siren sounds.

"Ah, here they come again."

" All we need. Didn't you say a bomb was gonna land... Here ?"

Jack nods. Someone in the background is singing.

"Never mind about that. If the contaminants air-borne now, there's hours left."

"For what?"

"Til nothing. 'Til forever. For the entire human race. And can anyone else hear singing?"

It's coming from the shed in which Nancy has been locked up.

The Doctor approaches her, taking his sonic screwdriver out of his jacket pocket. He flicks it on and begins to unlock her handcuffs. Rose and Jack appear in the doorway. The handcuffs snap open, Nancy stands, and they all leave the shed, leaving Jenkins fast asleep. They go back to the bomb site, and the Doctor and Jack uncover the Chula med-ship, which has a tarpaulin over it, hiding it from view. Nancy and Rose watch.

" You see? Just an ambulance."

"That's an ambulance?"

"It's hard to explain, it's... it's from another world."

"They've been trying to get in."

"Of course they have."

Jack begins to enter the code.

"They think they've got their hands on Hitler's latest secret weapon. What're you doing?"

"Well, the sooner you see this thing is empty, the sooner you'll see I had nothing to do with it."

The controls explode with sparks, and they all jump backwards. An alarm goes off.

"Didn't happen last time."

" It hadn't crashed last time. They're the emergency protocols."

"Doctor, what is that?"

A red light on the control panel flashes.

"Doctor!"rose shouts

The gates at the other side of the bomb site are shaking.

"Captain, secure those gates"

"Why?"

" Just do it!"

Jack obeys. The Doctor turns to Nancy.

"Nancy, how'd you get in here?"

"I cut the wire."

" Show Rose. Setting two thousand four hundred and twenty eight D. "

"What??"

" Reattaches barbed wire. Go!"

,Jack slams a gate shut.

The gasmask people emerge from the hospital doors, marching as one, calling for mummy.

The sonic screwdriver buzzes as Rose works on the wire, reattaching it. Nancy holds the two ends together as she fuses them. They finish one, start on another.

"Who are you? Who are any of you?wheres that other girl?"

"You'd never believe me if I told ya."

" You just told me that was an ambulance from another world. There are people running around with gas-mask heads calling for their mummies, and the sky's full of Germans dropping bombs on me. Tell me. Do you think there's anything left I couldn't believe?"

Rose looks at her, getting the point.

"We're time travellers from the future. and that girl you met was my sister Abby, she not well at the moment"

"Mad, you are."

"We have a time travel machine, seriously!"

"It's not that. All right, you've got a time travel machine. I believe ya. Believe anything, me. But what future?"

Explosions in mid-air. Planes soar around, dropping bombs.

"Nancy, this isn't the end. I know how it looks. But it's not the end of the world or anything..."

"How can you say that?? Look at it."

"Listen to me. I was born in this city. I'm from here, in like, 50 years time."

"From here"

" I'm a Londoner. From your future."..

"But... but you're not..."

"What?"

"German"

'Nancy, the Germans don't come here. They don't win. Don't tell anyone I told you so, but do you know what? You win."

"We win?"

Rose nods, smiling. Nancy half laughs, finding this unbelievably good news.

"Come on!"

They jump to their feet and head back to the Doctor and Jack. Jack opens the hatch of the med-ship.

"It's empty. Look at it"jack says

Rose and Nancy join them.

"What do you expect in a Chula medical transporter? Bandages? Cough drops? Rose?"

"I dunno."

"Yes, you do."

He mimes summoning the nanogenes.

"Nanogenes!"

"It wasn't empty, Captain. There was enough nanogenes in there to rebuild a species. "

"Oh, God."

" Getting it now, are we? When the ship crashes, the nanogenes escape. Billions upon billions of them, ready to fix all the cuts and bruises in the whole world. But what they find first is a dead child, probably killed earlier that night and wearing a gasmask."

"And they brought him back to life? They can do that? "

"What's life? Life's easy. A quirk of matter. Nature's way of keeping meat fresh. Nothing to a nanogene. One problem, though, these nanogenes, they're not like the ones on your ship. This lot have never seen a human being before. Don't know what a human being's supposed to look like."

Jack, Rose and Nancy are listening to him intently, processing this.

"All they've got to go on is one little body, and there's not a lot left. But they carry right on. They do what they're programmed to do, they patch it up. Can't tell what's gasmask and what's skull, but they do their best. Then off they fly - off they go, work to be done. 'Cos you see now they think they know what people should look like and it's time to fix all the rest. And they won't ever stop. They won't ever, ever stop. The entire Human Race is gonna be torn down and rebuilt in the form of one terrified child looking for its mother, and nothing in the world can stop it!"

His voice has risen almost to a shout. Jack is abashed, shaken.

" I didn't know."

The Doctor fixes him with a cold stare for a few seconds, and then goes back to examining the med-ship, starting work with his sonic screwdriver Nancy stares into the distance, beyond the fence. The gasmask people have arrived, still calling mummy.

"Rose?"

Rose rushes to Nancy's side, following her gaze. The gasmask people stumble towards them over the rail-track. They are quite a distance away, but still too close. Rose rushes back to the med-ship, and looks again at the flashing red light on the control panel.

"It's bringing the gasmask people here, isn't it?"

"The ship thinks it's under attack. It's calling up the troops. Standard protocol."

"But... the gasmask people aren't troops... doctor Abby"

"They are now. This is a battle-field ambulance. The nanogenes don't just fix you up, they get you ready for the front line. Equip you, programme you. she part of that now rose"

"that's why the Child's so strong. Why it could do that phoning thing."

"It's a fully equipped Chula warrior, yes. All that weapons tech in the hands of a hysterical four year old, looking for his mummy. And now there's an army of them."

The gasmask people surround the fence. The four of them look around nervously.

"Why don't they attack? "

"Good little soldiers. Waiting for their commander."

"The child?"

"Jamie."

"What?"

" Not "the child"."

The Doctor looks at her.

"So, how long until the bomb falls?"

"Any second."

"What's the matter, Captain? Bit close to the volcano for you?"

"He's just a little boy."

"I know."

"He's just a little boy who wants his mummy."

"I know. There isn't a little boy born who wouldn't tear the world apart to save his mummy. And this little boy can."

"So what're we gonna do?"

"I don't know."

Rose sighs. Tears whell in Nancy's eyes.

"it's my fault."

" No. "

"It is. It's all my fault"

" How can it be your."

He suddenly breaks off. He spins around, looking at all the gasmask people positioned behind the fence, calling for their mummy, and then back at Nancy, who is sobbing uncontrollably. He stares at her.

"Nancy, what age are you? Twenty? Twenty-one? Older than you look, yes?"

A bomb lands nearby. Rose and Jack flinch.

" Doctor, that bomb. We've got seconds."

Another lands.

"You can teleport us out."

The Doctor is paying them no attention, eyes fixed on the sobbing Nancy.

"Not you guys. The nav-com's back online. Gonna take too long to override the protocols."

"So it's volcano day. Do what you've got to do"

Jack looks at rose almost apologetically. He makes his decision and teleports himself out.

"How old were you five years ago? Fifteen? Sixteen? Old enough to give birth, anyway."

Nancy, still sobbing, glances up at him and then away again, shame faced.

"He's not your brother, is he?"

Nancy shakes her head, tearful.

"A teenage single mother in 1941. So you hid. You lied."

Nancy nods, tears streaming down her face.

"You even lied to him."

The gates swing open. The Child stands at the forefront of an army of gasmask people, ready to charge.

"Are you my mummy?"

"He's gonna keep asking, Nancy. He's never gonna stop. Tell him."

No answer. The gasmask people begin to walk forward.

"Nancy... the future of the human race is in your hands. Trust me... and tell him."

Nancy sniffs, still tearful. The Child approaches them.

"Are you my mummy? "

The Doctor gives Nancy a gentle push in the direction of the Child.

"Are you my mummy? Are you my mummy?"

"Yes. I AM your mummy"

The Child walks slowly forward.

" Mummy? "

"I'm here."

"Are you my mummy?"

"I'm here. "

"Are you my mummy?"

"Yes."

" He doesn't understand. There's not enough of him left"

Nancy looks at her little boy.

" I am your mummy. I will always be your mummy. I'm so sorry."

And she takes him into her arms, no longer caring what will happen. The nanogenes surround them, making them glow with a golden light.

"I am so, so sorry." Nancy says to Jamie

"What's happening?" Rose ssk the Doctor

Nancy, still hugging her little boy, has her eyes closed and is stroking his hair.

"Doctor, it's changing her, we should... "

"Shh!"

He stares intently at the two of them surrounded by the nanogenes, apprehensive and excited.

"Come on, please. Come on, you clever little nanogenes, figure it out! The mother. She's the mother! There's gotta be enough information, figure it out!"

"What's happening?"

"See? Recognizing the same DNA."

Nancy falls away from the child to the ground, as the nanogenes disappear. The Doctor and Rose rush over, the Doctor staring down at the child, hardly daring to hope.

"Oh, come on. Give me a day like this. Give me this one."

He reaches out to the gasmask... and removes it, revealing a perfectly ordinary, very sweet little boy underneath. Nancy stares in delighted wonder and the Doctor laughs ecstatically. He lifts the little boy into the air, swinging him around.

"Ah-ha-ha! Welcome back! Twenty years 'til pop music, you're gonna love it."

And he hugs Jamie, laughing.

"What happened?"

"The nanogenes recognised the superior information, the parent DNA. They didn't change you because you changed them! Haha! . Mother knows best!"

" Jamie...!"

A bomb lands nearby.

"Doctor, that bomb... "

"Taken care of it."

"How? "

"Psychology!"

The bomb plummets towards them... and is suddenly snatched out of the air by a blue forcefield. A moment later, Jack appears hovering in the tunnel of light. He calls down to them.

"Doctor!"

"Good lad!"

"The bomb's already commenced detonation. I've put it in stasis but it won't last long."

"Change of plan, don't need the bomb. Can you get rid of it? Safely as you can?"

"Rose?"

"Yeah?"

"Goodbye"

And he disappears. Rose looks slightly let down, and then he reappears.

"By the way, love the tee-shirt.",

He grins. Rose returns the grin, pulling the tee-shirt down embarrassedly. Jack disappears again. His ship zooms off into the night sky. The Doctor walks a few paces away, staring intently at his hands. He summons the nanogenes. They flutter around his hands.

"What're you doing?"

" Software patch. Gonna email the upgrade. and if im very lucky bringing back someone we care about. You want moves, Rose? I'll give you moves."

And he throws the nanogenes away from him, towards the gasmask people who are still milling around on the train track. The Doctor gives his widest grin as the gasmask people fall to the floor, the nanogenes surrounding them.

" Everybody lives, Rose. Just this once. Everybody lives!"

And the gasmask people get to their feet, except they are no longer gasmask people. They are restored to normal human beings. The Doctor bounds over to Doctor Constantine.

"Doctor Constantine. Who never left his patients. Back on your feet, constant doctor! World doesn't wanna get by without you just yet, and I don't blame it one bit. These are your patients. All better, now!"

"Yes, yes... so it seems. They also seem to be standing around in a disused railway station. Is there any particular reason for that?"

"Yeah, well, you know, cutbacks. Listen, whatever was wrong with them in the past, you're probably gonna find that they're cured. Just tell them what a great doctor you are. Don't make a big thing of it. Okay?"

And he rushes back to Rose. Rose turns to the Doctor.

"Abby? i cant see her"

"Shes got to be here"

As they continue to look a few people move aside and right behing then theres abbyback to normally kneeling next to an older lady trying to help her up. When they both stand Abby lets go and turns forward. Catching the doctors and Roses grins as they stare at her.

"Hello again" aabby shouts.

Rose runs towards Abby and Abby runs towards Rose and they both hug each other.

"Missed you"

"I thought i wernt going to see you again"

"Cant get rid of me thay easily"

Rose and Abby let go, Rose stands beside her facing the Doctor, noticing they are both staring at each other with big grins on their faces.

"Go" Rose whispers and slight pushed her.

"You sure"

"Yes. I think someone else missed you too"

Abby turns towards the Doctor and starts walking slowly towards him but she begins to pick up speed as she gets closer she notice the Doctor doing the same.

She reaches him. they stare at each other

"Hi"

"Hi"

"How you feeling"

"Better... ooo fuck it"

Abby grabs the Doctor and wraps her arms around his neck, she could feel the Doctor wrapping his arms around her waist.

"Thank god" she heard him whisper.

Anby turns her head toward him.

"Thank you"

She hugs the Foctor tight and it is returned, neither really wanting to let go in case its not really. Tose walks towards them the Doctor begins to let go but grabs Abbys hand straight away. Abby looks ay the Doctor and smile.

"Right, you lot! Lots to do! Beat the Germans, save the world, don't forget the Welfare State!"

Constantine smiles. He and his patients begin to walk away, and the Doctor bends down to the control as he lets go of Anbys hand. He speaks to Rose and Abby .

"Setting this to self-destruct, soon as everybody's clear. History says there was an explosion here. Who am I to argue with history?"

"Usually the first in line." Abby replies

The Doctor looks at her and grins. She grins back.

"Glod to have you back"

They all begin to make their way back to the tadis.

"The nanogenes will clean up the mess and switch themselves off, because I just told them to. Nancy and Jamie will go to Doctor Constantine for help, ditto - all in all, all things considered, fantastic!"

Rose smiles at his enthusiasm.

"Look at you, beaming away like you're Father Christmas!"

"Who says I'm not, red-bicycle-when-you-were-twelve?"

"What?!"

"And everybody lives, Rose! Everybody lives!" the Doctor says as he looks at Abby, big grin on both of their faves.

"I need more days like this"

"Doctor... "

"Go on, ask me anything. I'm on fire!"

"What about Jack?"

The Doctor's smile fades, and he carries on working, as though he doesn't want to answer this.

"Why'd he say goodbye?"

No answer. The Doctor stares intently at the console.

"Whos jack?" Abby asks

"Hes our friend. hes been helping us"

"Where is he then"

"He stopped the bomb that was supposed to hit where we were earlier, he moved it'

Abby walks close to the Doctor and grabs his hand.

"Are we gonna go get him then, we never leave someone behind if we dont need to"

The Doctor grabs Abbys hand back and squeezes it.

"Off we go then... here we are"

Rose runs to the tardis doors and opens them.

"Well, hurry up then!"

Jack leaps to his feet and dashes into the TARDIS.

Rose and the Doctor are waltzing around to "Moonlight Serenade". Rose is teaching the Doctor dances moves, making okaying noises as they dance. Jack looks around at the sheer size of the place, compared with the outside, he finds a woman just standing of to the side watching them and laughing. Jack walks over.

"Uou must be Abby."

"And you must be Jack, heard alot about you from these two the past hour."

"Only bad things i hope" Jack says with a wink

"Only the worst" Abby replied with a wink and a laugh . They continued to watch the Doctor and Rose dancing.

"Right, and turn...Okay, okay, try and spin me again, but this time, don't get my arm up my back!" arose says

The Doctor looks sheepish.

"No extra points for a half-nelson."

" I'm sure I used to know this stuff. Close the door, will you. Your ship's about to blow up, there's gonna be a draft."

Rose grins and leans against one of the pillars Abby walks over to stand next to her The Doctor flicks a switch and the engines start up.

"Welcome to the TARDIS. its bigger on the inside... "

"I think what the Doctor's trying to say is... you may cut in" Rose says

They grin and she takes his hand, as if to dance with him.

Abby walks up to the doctors and say

"well i guess that makes you my dance partner"

"Fantastic!" he says with a grin.

"In The Mood" blares out of the speakers, wherever they are. Lights flash all around the room, and the Doctor moves closer to Abby in time to the music, clicking his fingers.

"Actually I can dance!" he says as he began to spin Abby.

Rose sniggers and hops up the steps to take the jacks hands. Jack watches them with a big smile on his face as they all dance around the console room, perfect partners. The Doctor suddenly throws Abby backwards over his arm, earning a whoop of delight from her.Jack averts his eyes, still smiling. Abby pulls herself up, and sags onto his shoulder, giggling.
