'Computer start diary'

Two days since my last update, I'm glad I took the time off and got caught up with some friends on the planet. But it's back to work now, I had some ideas while away too. I have been focusing on one big computer core as they had in the show, and I feel like slapping myself for falling into star trek thinking. I'm a Brit from the 21st century, from a different reality, I daunt have to do things the way they are done hear.

I had the idea of a computer core array or cluster, multiple smaller computer cores working together but each still having its main focus. A navigation/piloting core, engineering core, combat/weapons core, communication/sensor core, etc. Isolinear computer cores from shuttles do show up on the second-hand market and they're cheaper too.

The second idea I had was to modify the cargo containers, with four down each side for eight in total. What I want to do is take the forward two on each side and combined them for more space. The normal-sized ones can be kept for normal trade work, but I want the extra space for my experiments and ideas.

I've got a line on six shuttle computer cores and the engineers on the station are running design and build simulations before combining the cargo containers together for me, the extra mass is going to change the stress points and warp profile. It's annoying but I want the extra space. The computer cores should arrive in 4-5 days, but the cargo pod rebuild could take a week or two.

Since it seems I got time to kill before my next big job I've decided to tackle some smaller ones, more like general maintenance. Both inside3 and out my ship is a patchwork of Gray, brown, and white, the exterior will have to wait because of the rebuild but I can do the main sections internally.

I have chosen white for the ceilings, a dark silver/Gray for the walls, and a burgundy carpet with all the highlights and edging in light neon green. I hope it looks good but I got to get started.

The cosmetic redecoration on the ship is done, and it looks dam good. The station engineers said they can start the partial rebuild in two days and the shuttle cores arrived this morning. All six are in good condition, I just got to install them and install the programs I want on each one. Luckily because I'm a civilian I'm not restricted to just using federation programming, so I have put up notices on some not quite legal sites for a bunch of different ones.

I have decided to go for a navigation computer to pilot my ship for me, this should be a straight foreword as most ships do it this way for day-to-day operations. The only time a human steps in is to add randomness to manoeuvrers like evasions or when there's a maneuver that the computer can not handle. I will probably go with mostly standard software for this but I will be keeping an eye out for any combat maneuvering software to add to it.

For the engineering main computer, I'm going to be looking for mostly Vulcan software, maybe I should drop a line to the Vulcan institute of science they may have some programs I could use. Again a pretty straight foreword concept.

The next would be a combat focussed core and I'm looking for Andorian or Klingon-inspired combat programs, I choose this because both races are combat orientated in thought and culture so their combat software should in theory at least be a step above most.

For environmental and life support that will all be bog stranded but still the best, I can get. The last one would be sensors and communication and I would love to get some Romulan-inspired sensor software but those guys are still hiding and the Enterprise is still waiting for Picard to show up for its maiden voyage. I'm mostly going to be looking for Vulcan-inspired or just the best federation software I can buy.

Those are the five main ones for the ship the last I'm going to keep for my R&D projects, its why I wanted the cargo spaces merged and enlarged. For that core, I will be snagging software and code from all over the place. The hardest part of all this is the overriding operating architecture to get it all running together, I will have to do some reading and searching I will have to check the planets library.

I just need two minutes I'm exhausted. Over the past two weeks I have installed my new cores and connected them all up, power, cooling, interconnection as well as to their systems. All very detailed and focus attentive work, but the good news is the combining of the four foreword cargo containers is done and looks good.

The reason I'm so very very tired is software, I had no idea what I was letting myself in for, I just should have gone fed all the way, and downloaded the stranded programs rather than trying to be, well, me I guess.

If I hear another Ferengi voice offering me a 'Great deal' or Vulcan of all people explaining, in great, monotone depth, why using their software was only ' Logical', I will scream. I even had a Klingon sales rep bugging me that their targeting software was 100% effective. Got no idea what toDSaH is thou, and I was nice too, Klingon and nice, I see my mistake.

( A deep sigh can be heard )

I think I may have had section thirty-one try to sell me programming too, something about the guy just made me want to shoot him, dance on his body, do a few tea bags, then jettison him into a black hole.

Nevertheless, I'm still sifting through programs and software, the sheer amount of viruses and trojans is awesome. I did get lucky on the software to use to tie all the cores together because that's how the library does it already since no one core can hold all the information it's split between, like fifty on just this one world alone. I got the basics to get about adding in some code from a digital self-adaptive assistant and I'm good.

Going to leave of hear because tomorrow is the big day, my first flight. It's just to the next planet and back, all in the system.
