"I used to be a Sinestro Corps member myself, for complicated reasons, and kept the Ring. You will wear my green one while I wear the yellow, and you'll fight off your fears. Let's see what they are." Hal took off his Power Ring, gave it to Cathal, and put on the yellow one while Cathal put on the green.
"Astraphobia and ophidiophobia? Okay, let's go." Hal and John both grabbed one of his arms and flew up to the school roof.
"Now, this ring can create hard-light constructs based on the target's fears, so we'll see how well you handle yours. First, astraphobia. Thunder and lightning." With that, he made a fist and pointed it at Cathal. Yellow storm clouds appeared above them, and they crackled with yellow electricity. Cathal instinctively started to get low to the ground, but stopped himself and forced calm into his body. It worked.
Hal spoke quietly. "Well done. I'm going to test you against ophidiophobia now."
Now this was a minor fear, and one that Cathal could deal with. He put on Hal's Green Lantern Power Ring as Hal's yellow Power Ring projected eight snakes on the surface of the roof. Cathal willed a hard-light shovel into being and started wracking the snakes with all his strength. As the last of them disintegrated, Cathal's shovel followed their example.
"Well, we'll just have to work on that one later." Hal took off the yellow ring and gestured for Cathal to do the same. The boy complied and gave the veteran hero his ring.
"Okay. Cathal, you did very well facing your fears. You didn't give in to them, which is a key trait and necessity for any Green Lantern. Now we need to take you to Oa and have you complete your training there, where there is much more sophisticated technology than just my yellow ring here. Here, have this ring, just in case you need to defend yourself against something while not in the company of another Green Lantern Corps member or ally or, of course, need to breathe while in space. It used to belong to a woman named Katma Tui." He handed Cathal another Green Lantern Power Ring, which Cathal accidentally dropped. The ring levitated itself back into Cathal's hand.
"Oh," said Hal, "it likes you!"
Cathal smiled.
