Chapter 2
BOOM The was another knock on the door.
This time Dudley woke up "Where is the cannon?"
Jasmin hurried and hid behind the sofa just as her uncle came barging in holding a rifle in his hand, he looked worried. "Who's there? I warn you, I am armed!" he shouted towards the door.
One more thud and the door fell forwards removed from its hinges and crashed on the floor.
Jasmin peeked from behind the couch and could see the silhouette of a man he was suddenly lit up by a thunderbolt behind him, he was a very frightening sight. As he stepped in she could see that he was the largest man she had ever seen, he had a big mane of black hair and a matching wild beard.
"sorry abou' that." he said and lifted the door back in place. "Couldn't make us a cup o' tea, could yeh? It's not been an easy journey" He stepped forward and made his way to the sofa, Dudley jumped off and run to hide behind his mother.
"An here's Jasmin!" the giant of a man said when he saw her behind the sofa, she was found out so she just stood up, trying to look brave. To her surprise, he looked happy to see her, she could not see his mouth under his beard but those eyes looked like he was smiling.
"Las' time I saw you, you were only a baby," said the giant. "Yeh look a lot like yer dad, but yeh've got yer mom's eyes."
"My dad? My mom?" Jasmin started but was interrupted by her Uncle
"I demand that you leave at once, sir!" he said. "You are breaking and entering!"
This didn't seem to disturb the giant, he took Vernon's rifle and bent it like it was nothing "Ah shut up Dursley yeh great prune" the effect this had on her Uncle would have been hilarious if Jasmin herself wouldn't have felt every bit as scared of this man.
"Anyways Jasmin" the giant continued no longer paying any mind to the Dursleys "A very Happy birthday to yeh, I got summat fer yeh here, I mighta sat on it at some point but it will taste great all the same." He from a pocket on his overcoat pulled out a slightly squashed box and handed it over to Jasmin, she took it and opened it up, it was a large chocolate cake whit green icing that said, Happy Birthday Jasmin.
"Is this for me?" she asked shakingly
"It got yeh name on it hasn't it?" the giant asked beaming.
Jasmin knew the right thing to do was to say thank you but instead, she asked. "Who are you?"
The giant chuckled at her answer and Jasmin couldn't help letting out a sigh, she hadn't offended the big man.
"True, I haven't introduced meself. Rubeus Hagrid, Keeper of Keys and Grounds at Hogwarts."
He held up an enormous hand and shook Jasmin's arm, she flinched but the giant didn't notice. "So what about the tea, if you don't have summat stronger that is"
When no one made a move he looked around, his eyes stopped at the fireplace, he snorted and walked over to it. Jasmin could not really see what he did but suddenly fire was burning inside, the warmth blasting from the fireplace was a relief from the damp cold inside. The giant vent back to the sofa and took things out of his coat, he seemed to have everything as he pulled out a copper kettle, a pack of sausages, a poker, a teapot and a few chipped mugs. He took a swig from a bottle and then stood up again and made some tea, soon enough he started to cook the sausages as well over the fire.
The smell reminded Jasmin that she hadn't eaten anything in a long time and felt her stomach grumble, apparently Dudley was also feeling hungry as he took a step forward before his father pulled him back "Don't touch anything he gives you, son!"
The giant only chuckled at this
"Yer great puddin' of a son don' need fattenin' anymore, Dursley, don' worry."
He held up the sausages for Jasmin who hesitated but finally took one after a grin from the giant.
She took a small bite, in her hunger it was dilesus, she couldn't help herself and ate the whole thing fast and took a second one when it was offered, with her stomach a bit more settled she looked up at the giant.
"I am sorry sir, but... I still don't really know who you are."
The giant put the rest of his sausage in his mouth and washed it down with his tea before he answered.
"Jus' call me Hagrid, no need of all this sir. An' like I told yeh, I'm the Keeper of Keys at Hogwarts, yeh know all about Hogwarts o' course"
"Ehm.. no, si.. Hagrid" Jasmin said
Hagrid looked shocked.
"I am sorry." Jasmin said quickly and shuffled back a little bit.
"Sorry?" Hagrid barked and looked at the Dursleys who stepped backward.
"It's them as should be sorry! I knew yeh weren't gettin' yer letters but I never thought yeh wouldn't even know abou' Hogwarts, fer cryin' out loud! Did yeh never wonder where yer parents learned it all?"
"My parents? All what?" asked Jasmin
"ALL WHAT?" Hagrid thundered. "Now wait jus' one second!"
Hagrid quickly lept to his feet and he looked even larger now when he was angry, he rounded on the Dursleys who were covering against the wall, Jasmin lept up to her feet and took several steps backward, he might not be angry at her but he was scary.
"Do you mean to tell me," he growled at the Dursleys, "that this girl — this girl! — knows nothin' abou'... about ANYTHING?"
Trying to defuse the situation Jasmin spoke up with a slight shake of her voice "I know some things, I am not bad at math and such."
This did not make the giant any less angry. "About our world, I mean. Yer world. My world. Yer parents' world."
Jasmin was rather confused, world? did she come from another world? Was she an alien? That would explain why she was such a strange weirdo.
"World? What world?" she asked.
Asking this looked like it was a mistake as Hagrid looked like he could explode any second, once again his anger was towards her' family' "DURSLEY!" he boomed.
Uncle Vernon was pale as snow, his mouth was working but no words were coming. Hagrid looked back a Jasmin who flinched at his stare
"But yeh must know about yer mom and dad," he said. "I mean, they're famous. You're famous."
"My parents were famous? I don't know them, I don't even know their names.." Jasmin answered carefully, afraid that this would anger Hagrid more but, Hagrid just looked crestfallen.
"Yeh don' know… yeh don' know… Yeh doesn't even know their name or... or who yeh are.
Suddenly her Uncle had found his voice and, Jasmin was almost impressed at his bravery in standing up to Hagrid
"STOP! I forbid you to tell this girl anything!"
Vernon's newfound courage soon melted away at Hagrid's stare.
"You never told her? What Dumbledore left fer her? I was there! Didn't you tell her anythin'?"
"Wha.. what wasn't I told?" Jasmin asked
"STOP! I FORBID YOU!" yelled Uncle Vernon he was panicking, Jasmin wondered what this dark secret was that her uncle was in such a state, she looked at the aunt who looked ready to faint.
"Ah, go boil yer heads, both of yeh," said Hagrid. "Jasmin... yer a witch."
A witch? I am a freak then. Jasmin thought to herself. Maybe she just misheard!
"I am a what?"
"A witch, o' course," said Hagrid, as he sat down on the sofa. "an' a thumpin' good 'un, I'd say, once yeh've been trained up a bit. With a mum an' dad like yours, what else would yeh be?"
"I didn't know my parents. and I am nothing special, I am just me"
"Okay just yeh, have yeh ever dun summat when yeh been angry or scared? Summant yeh couldn't explain?"
Jasmin thought back at strange things that happen, her hair growing back overnight, the glass disappearing and the snake speaking to her, or the latest when her cupboard door open up in her need even thou it was locked. She looked up at Hagrid and he was smiling at her, seeing the realization on her face.
" I reckon it's abou' time yeh read yer letter." Hagrid said and gave her a letter
Miss. J. Potter, The Floor, Hut-on-the-Rock, The Sea.
Dear Miss. Potter, We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Please find enclosed a list of all necessary books and begins on September 1.
We await your owl by no later than July 31.
Yours sincerely,
Minerva McGonagall,
Deputy Headmistress
Many questions flew around in Jasmin's head, she wasn't sure what to ask first
"Ehm Hagrid, what do they mean awaiting my owl?"
"Gallopin' Gorgons, that reminds me," said Hagrid and somehow pulled out an own from one of his pockets, a real live hooting owl, Jasmin pinched herself so hard that she winched as Hagrid wrote a quick letter, she read it upside down.
Dear Professor Dumbledore,
Given Jasmin his letter.
Taking her to buy her things tomorrow.
Weather's horrible. Hope you're well.
Hagrid
He rolled up the note gave it to the owl and threw it out into the raging storm outside.
"Will the owl be okay?" Jasmin stammered
"Of course, ruddy brilliant them owls be" Hagrid answered her.
Just as Jasmin open her mouth to ask another question her Uncle spat out "She is not going!"
Hagrid grunted "I'd like to see a great Muggle like you stop her."
"A what?" Jasmin asked
"A Muggle, nonmagical folk. "
"We swore when we took her in we'd put a stop to that rubbish," said Uncle Vernon, "swore we'd stamp it out of her! Witch indeed!"
"Wait, you knew about this?" Jasmin asked confused.
"Knew?" Came the shriek from Aunt Petunia "of course we knew, how could you not be? Being the spawn of my freak sister and the nasty Potter boy! Nothing good came out of it, when she came home and turned cups into rats to our parent's great delight. Her last way to spite me was to get herself blown up so we got landed with... you."
The words cut deep, Jasmin knew she was an unloved freak. Still being told that her existence was nothing but spite to her Aunt still hurt.
"Y... you said my parents did in a car crash." Jasmin said very quietly.
"CAR CRASH!" Came the roar from Hagrid "How could a car crash kill Lily an' James Potter? It's an outrage! A scandal! Jasmin doesn't know who she or her parents are, believing herself to be a freak? When every kid in our world knows her name!"
Hagrid looked a Jasmin and it looked like he deflated, his anger was becoming more anxious. "I wasn't ready fer this. I don' tink I am the right person to tell yeh, but someone's gotta."
Hagrid told Jasmin about the night her parents died, how the evilest wizard that lived had come to her home and killed first her father, then her mother, how he had tried to kill her but how she somehow she survived and he disappeared. The lightning bolt scar on her forehead was a souvenir of the attempt on her life as a one-year-old infant. He also told her how distrust and fear had ruled when he who must not be named was at large.
Hagrid had taken a handkerchief and blew his nose sounding very sad. He said that he had known her parents and hos they were the most wonderful people he knew. Tears stung in the back of Jasmin's eyes but she would not let them out, she would not cry especially not in front of the Dursleys, things had always become worse when they saw her cry.
As Hagrid told the story Jasmin once again remember the green light, she thought it somehow had been from the car crash that took her family, not understanding why it was green, but now it made more sense.. the hair on the back of her neck rose as she now could remember one more thing, a high pitched cold laugh.
"You saved me from the destroyed house?" Jasmin asked as Hagrid's tale ended.
"I did, lent Siri...err, I lent a flying bike and flew yeh to yeh aunt and uncle." Hagrid's stumble one a word or name piqued Jasmin's curiosity but she did not get the chance to ask as her Uncle one again found his voice
"Load of old tosh! Now listen her girl, I accept there is something strange about you, I thought a few good beating would have cured it but apparently, I was too lenient" Uncle Vernon said angrily. Jasmin winced, had he been lenient to her? What would have happened if he wasn't?
"As for your parents", he continued "They were weirdos, no denying that and the world is a much better place without them. They asked for it getting mixed up with all that unnatural rubbish!"
Vernon had apparently said too much as Hagrid took a step towards him and held up a pink umbrella towards him, looking like he was ready to impale him with it.
"I am warning you Dursley, I am warning you... one more word..."
Vernon apparently took the warning seriously and attempted to flatten his bulk to the wall.
"That's better" Hagrid muttered, he looked towards Jasmin and his face soften once more.
"Are you sure you found the right person Hagrid?" Jasmin even if a lot of the evidence was on Hagrid's side, she did not feel like she was some special famous witch, if that was the case how had the Dursleys been able to treat her the way they did, if the most powerful evil wizard could not kill her, how could her Uncle or her cousin for that matter hits her and not be turned it to toads or blow up?
"I am sure, I look at yeh and you have yeh mom's eyes, yeh also have a striking resemblance of yeh father. I would know who yeh were if I meet yeh on the street."
"She is not going!" Spat Uncle Vernon "She is going to Stonewall High and will be grateful for it!"
"If she wants ter go, a great Muggle like you won't stop her," growled Hagrid. "Stop Lily an' James Potter's daughter goin' ter Hogwarts! Yer mad. Her name's been down ever since she was born. She's off ter the finest school of witchcraft and wizardry in the world. Seven years there and she won't know herself. She'll be with youngsters of her own sort, fer a change, an' she'll be under the greatest headmaster Hogwarts ever had Albus Dumble..."
"I AM NOT PAYING FOR SOME CRACKPOT OLD FOOL TO TEACH HER MAGIC TRICKS!" yelled Uncle Vernon.
This had been the last drop, Hagrid's temper and boiled over "NEVER! INSULT! ALBUS! DUMBLEDORE! IN! FRONT! OF! ME! "
He brought his umbrella down and pointed it at Dudley who had snuck up to steal Jasmin's birthday cake, there was a flash of violet and Dudley squealed like a pig, rather fitting as a pig's curly tail was sticking up from his fat bottom, he and his parents screamed and run into the second room slamming the door closed behind them.
Hagrid sat back on the sofa and put his umbrella on his lap, he scratched his beard and sighed "Shouldn'ta lost me temper, It didn't work, meant to turn him to a pig. "
"Maybe he already was close enough?" Jasmin said tentatively trying to cheer the giant man up.
"Hah! Right yeh are! Be grateful if yeh didn't mention this, not supposed ter do magic."
"I won't. why are you not supposed to do magic?" asked Jasmin
"I, I was at Hogwarts but got expelled... in me third year to tell yeh the truth. "
"Hagrid, why were you expelled" Jasmin quickly regretted asking the question as Hagrid got a bit stiff.
"It's gettin' late and we've got lots ter do tomorrow," said Hagrid loudly. "Gotta get up ter town, get all yer books an' that."
Not wanting to test her luck she nodded and laid down on the floor, in all this excitement she had forgotten how cold it was, she was soon shivering curled up like a ball trying to keep warm.
Suddenly she felt something heavy and warm come over her, she looked up and saw that Hagrid had put his giant coat over her like a blanket he smiled at her and laid back on the sofa. Once again she could feel the burning sensation behind her eyes, she was not used to somebody caring for her.
This had been the strangest night in her life, but it was also the best.
A/N
Second chapter whoop.
I have a really hard time writing Hagrid and trying to follow the original story with changes coming from Jasmin being a bit of a different person.
Hopefully, Chapter 3 will be done next weekend, depending on my workload.
