Chapter 1: His Sister (Rough draft which includes grammar mistakes).
That morning, Pete received a surprising phone call. When he hung up, he was shocked but overjoyed. "Honey, who was that?" he heard his wife say. "My baby sister, Bella. She was the only one I stayed in touch with. She had been adopted by a police chief in Washington. Her father and mother died a year ago when she was doing her fellowship year at Seattle Grace Hospital. She is a surgical oncologist and she's moving here," he smiled. He had missed her. They may have written, phoned, and visited each other over the years, but it wasn't the same.
"That's great. I would like to meet her, and Lucas needs more family around," Violet said smiling. "Bella loves children. We may never get him back," he joked. They would get Lucas back but he will be so spoiled when they do. One thing Pete would never tell anyone about his sister without her permission was that she could not have children due to something terrible that happened to her while they were still with that sorry excuse of a woman.
"Where will she be living?" Violet asked since they didn't have the room in their home. "I sold her my house a year ago, and it has been under construction so she'll have a home that suits her. I knew she was going to be moving here, I just didn't know when. I have no idea what prompted her to move so fast," Pete explained and he was wondering if something had happened to his baby sister. Violet was going to say something so her husband wouldn't worry, but a knock sounded at the door. When Pete opened it, he saw his baby sister, and from the looks of it, Bella has been crying.
"Bella! I didn't know you were in the city. What's wrong?" he asked wrapping her in his arms. Violet was shocked. Her husband never showed this much emotion. "Charlie's dead. He was killed in the line of duty, and Renee and Phil died in a plane crash. I needed to get away," she said breathing in her big brother's comforting scent. "Oh, Bella. I'm so sorry," he said holding his sister close for the first time in five years.
"There's, uh, something else..." she said pulling away. "What is it?" he asked worriedly. "My ex-boyfriend is in prison. He was abusive in every way imaginable. He almost killed me. I found out I wasn't the first. He killed the last girl he was with. He's never getting out of prison, and if he hadn't, he would have lost everything. His parents, Garrett and Kate disowned him and revealed everything he did publically. I'm sure you have seen James Hunter in the papers and on the news," Bella gave the cliffsnotes on what was going on.
"That sonofabitch! You weren't mentioned in the papers or on the news," Pete said angrily, and he felt like such a failer as Bella's brother. He was to protect her and keep her safe. "Garrett and Kate wanted to protect me because they couldn't protect me from their own son. They got in touch with some great doctors in the city so when I am ready, I will have all the help I need. They also sold everything that had belonged to James, and his trust fund, and gave it to me. But because I didn't need anything because of the wonderful people that have taken care of me, it's just sitting there," she explained.
"They sound like wonderful people," Violet said drawing Bela's attention. "Oh, I am sorry. I didn't mean to say all that before properly meeting my favorite brother's wife," Bella said hugging her new sister-in-law. "Sorry. I'm a hugger," Bella said laughing. "It's fine," Violet said smiling.
