"Ok," Charlie said nervously as she opened the door. "This is going to be your room. I'm sure it's not as nice as-"
"It's wonderful, my dear," the voice tinkled behind her. Charlie turned to the kind brown eyes that were trained on her, not the room. She couldn't help but gulp. It was strange. The angel wasn't intimidating in the slightest. In fact she was quite the opposite. She had large warm brown eyes with long brown hair that fell softly around her face. A face that beamed with warmth. It was difficult to assign an age to the angel. She didn't look...old...but there was a maturity to her. She had probably passed on in her 40's perhaps? Even then, Charlie had never met an angel so for all she knew there was some kind of reverse aging that happened. She could be 100 years old and looked 30 for all she knew. There was a peace that radiated from her that should have been calming but just felt out of place in hell.
"Right," Charlie agreed nervously. "Well...I guess I'll leave you to get settled...if you need anything just let me know and I would be very excited to introduce you to everyone later if you-"
"You're the one in charge of all this." It was a statement, not a question, uttered gently as the angel breezed passed Charlie into the room. Charlie gave an awkward affirmation, playing with her hair. The angel's eyes gently scanned the room, taking it all in with a sigh. "It's very ambitious of you darling. I don't know much about what it's like here but I suppose I wouldn't expect a daughter of the devil to have such...noble intentions." Brown eyes looked at Charlie curiously who seemed to calm slightly.
"Yeah...for what it's worth not many people are...um...in support," She offered the last part with a comical fist jab. The angel didn't react and she self-consciously crossed her arms. "But we've seen progress. I think it could...maybe make a difference." She couldn't help but feel more uncomfortable under the angel's held gaze. There was nothing harsh in it, just...amusement. The calmness was receding again and she wasn't sure what to say.
The angel broke her gaze with a small laugh. It was pleasant and rang through the room, breaking the tension. Charlie felt her shoulders relax as she laughed along.
"It's funny darling, there's something familiar about you. I'm sure we don't know each other but you must...remind me of someone I used to know. It's a strange feeling," the Angel gave another laugh. "I'm curious how this will be, my being here. As I believe Michael explained, we don't have memories in heaven. Or most of the feelings associated with them. He warned me though that the longer I spend here, the more they may….'edge their way in' I believe is the way he phrased it."
"So you really don't remember anything?" Charlie asked tentatively.
The angel looked thoughtful for a moment. "I remember...that my name is Joan. I remember that I was thirty-eight in earth years. And….I believe that's all?" She looked back at Charlie and gave her a warm laugh. "I'm sure this sounds silly to you down here. My understanding is part of your punishments are having to remember...well...everything."
Charlie opened her mouth but wasn't sure what to say. She hadn't thought about it that way before.
"I'm making you uncomfortable?"
"No! No, I just...I've never met an angel before…" she laughed nervously. "Well I'll um...I'll leave you to...just let me know if you need anything." And with that she slipped out, closing the door behind her. She took a deep, stabling breath. This was definitely going to take some getting used to.
