Sawyer rushed through the jungle; his jaw clenched as he quickened his pace the closer they got to the beach. Something was wrong. Something had happened. He just...knew it. His panic was growing as he realised, they were still more than an hour away from the beach, where the Others most likely were, having captured their friends. If they somehow managed to save them, he still had no idea how he was going to get down to the Looking Glass Station. To Kali.
"How far away are these guns?" Sawyer questioned.
"There aren't any guns" Juliet confessed, as his eyes narrowed, grabbing her arm to stop her from walking any further.
"What?" He gaped.
"I lied. It was the only way he'd let us go back" Juliet pointed out, as Sawyer let go of his arm, satisfied she wasn't leading him into a trap.
"So why are you going back?" Sawyer asked.
"Kali helped me out...as much as I hate to admit it, so did her brother...I guess I owe them" Juliet theorised.
"She's got under your skin, huh?" Sawyer smirked, as they began walking again.
"Your girlfriend is definitely one of a kind, James" Juliet murmured.
"I know" He replied, with a sad smile, picking up his pace.
"She might be fine, you know. For all we know she might be back on the beach—" Juliet started, when Sawyer cut her off.
"And getting attacked by the Others" Sawyer finished for her.
"Did you two know each other? Off the island I mean?" Juliet inquired, as Sawyer quirked an eyebrow.
"What, you didn't get enough info from our files?" He scoffed.
"I only read what I needed to know. Scouts honour" Juliet smirked.
"...No. We met on the plane. And then after the crash...we decided to stick together" Sawyer answered, as Juliet's smirk grew.
"You're risking a lot for someone you've only known ninety days" Juliet pointed out.
"Truth is...Kali's all I've got" Sawyer mumbled, as Juliet's eyes softened.
"I'm sure that's not true" She stated.
"Maybe not. But she's all I want" Sawyer replied, as Juliet nodded, sadly.
"Hey! Hey, guys! Wait up!" Hurley called out, as he raced toward them, his face shining with sweat.
"The hell are you doing here, Hugo?" Sawyer questioned, as he came to a stop in front of them, panting heavily.
"I'm coming with you" Hurley informed him.
"Uh-uh. No way" Sawyer huffed, already turning around to walk away from him.
"They're my friends too, man. I just want to help" Hurley insisted.
"You're just gonna' get in the way. You want to get yourself killed?" Sawyer retorted, shaking his head.
"I was thinking of saving the day actually" Hurley exclaimed, holding up a set of keys in his hand, as Sawyer's eyes narrowed.
Miles away, deep under the surface of the sea, Kali was still shaking from her conversation with whatever had stolen Mikhail's voice. Billy's voice. It made no sense. But she knew they didn't have the time to debate what was possible. They had a decision to make. One that could save their friends, or leave them stranded on the island.
"We should leave" Desmond announced, as Kali gave him a look of disbelief.
"But what about the signal? If we don't turn off the jamming equipment, Jack won't be able to call Naomi's boat" Kali pointed out, as Desmond shook his head, vehemently.
"Maybe that's how it's supposed to be" Desmond stated, as Kali walked out of the room with the jamming equipment.
"The Others are coming for us, Des. If we don't get off this island soon, it's gonna' be a bloody massacre! What if that thing is right? What if this is the only way we survive?" Kali pushed.
"You won't" Desmond retorted, thinking of his earlier vision, his mind still haunted by it.
"Look, I don't know what your visions mean...or what that thing was on the radio, but how can us going home be a bad thing? Don't we have to at least try?" Kali insisted, reaching out to place her hand on Desmond's shoulder.
"I don't know. I really don't anymore" Desmond sighed, as she gave his shoulder a comforting squeeze.
"Alright. Let's figure out how we're gonna' get out of here first, yeah? We can decide what to do about the jamming signal after. You think that diving gear works?" Kali asked, gesturing over to oxygen cylinders in the corner.
"Aye, should do. Looks like it's all connected up and ready to go" Desmond murmured, as they walked over to the equipment, finding three BCD's, with oxygen attached.
"There's only three..." Kali trailed off, her eyes flickering over to Greta, who was still cowering in the corner, her legs drawn up to her chest.
"We can't leave her here" Desmond told her, as she nodded.
"We can't kill her either" Kali muttered.
"She wouldn't have a problem with shooting you, Kali" Desmond pointed out.
"Well, I guess it's a good thing I'm better than her then" Kali exclaimed, as she lifted up one of the BCD's, which could be strapped around a person, connecting them to their oxygen tank.
"Yeah...yeah, it is" Desmond mumbled, with a small smile, a fond expression on his face.
"Des, what did you see—" Kali started, but was cut off as the lights in the station suddenly switched off.
"What the fuck was that?" Kali questioned, as the lights flickered back on, a ticking sound following shortly after.
She realised in a panic that Charlie was now nowhere to be seen, her eyes darting around the station, falling on the open door to the equipment room. She raced forward, half expecting to find her friend dead on the floor, but as she neared the doorway, she instead found him with his finger still on the keypad of the panel. She looked up to see the yellow blinking light had turned an ominous red colour and was no longer flickering. Her mouth went slack when she realised what Charlie had done.
"I had to, Kali. If it saves Claire and Aaron, I'd do anything" Charlie admitted, as she let out a long sigh, feeling Desmond coming to stand beside her.
"Nothing happened?" Desmond frowned, as Kali's eyes narrowed, still hearing the ticking sound, noticing it was louder in the signal room.
"Let's not wait around to find out. Get the diving gear on" Kali told him.
"I don't know how to use it" Desmond pointed out.
"Turn the dial on the oxygen canister, you'll be able to feel it coming out of the mouthpiece. Then just strap the BCD on like a backpack. I'll be there in a second, okay?" Kali insisted, as Desmond reluctantly nodded, doing as he was told.
"I'm sorry—" Charlie began, as she shushed him, patting him on the shoulder.
"Don't. You might have just saved us all, mate" Kali stated, hoping her tone sounded convincing.
Truthfully, she was horrified at what it could mean. If Charlie had stopped the jamming signal, and it led to them all being able to leave the island...it would mean Kali would be left behind. She wasn't sure she was ready for that. They still had to figure out how they were going to get out of the Looking Glass Station, let alone getting back to the rest of the group—
Her thoughts were cut off when she heard a new sound coming from the control panel. A beeping noise, it almost sounded like...
A phone.
"Charlie, look!" Kali exclaimed, noticing a button had begun flashing red on the panel.
"Incoming transmission" Charlie gaped, reading the words underneath the button, as he pressed it without a second's thought.
Kali's eyes widened as static appeared on the screen above the panel, followed by a woman's blurry image. Charlie grabbed the microphone attached, a rare look of hope in his eyes.
"Hello? Can you hear me?" The woman questioned, her voice distorted by the static.
"Yes, yes, I can hear you" Charlie replied, grabbing onto Kali's arm, unable to believe what was happening.
"Who is this? Who am I speaking to?" The woman inquired.
"Charlie...Charlie Pace, I'm a survivor of Flight eight-one-five, Oceanic Flight eight-one-five" He repeated, as Kali chose to stay quiet, knowing she was never supposed to be on the flight.
"Where are you?" The woman asked.
"We're on an island, we're alive" Charlie informed her, as the woman's image slowly became clearer.
"An island?! Where, what's your location?" The woman insisted, as Kali recognised she now had a clear English accent.
"I don't know. Who's this?" Charlie retorted, as the static finally went away, revealing the woman's face.
"This is Penelope. Penelope Widmore. How did you get this frequency?" She answered, as Kali's jaw dropped open.
It was her. Desmond's girlfriend. She had found him.
"Desmond? Desmond!" Charlie called out for his friend, who was busy strapping the BCD over his shoulders.
"Did you just say Desmond?" Penny gaped, a beaming smile growing on her lips.
"Yeah, he's here, he's with us" Charlie told her, as Penny let out a long sigh of relief.
"Is he OK?" Penny questioned.
"He's gonna' be more than okay when he sees you" Kali laughed.
"Who's that?" Penny asked, not having realised there was someone else in the room.
"I'm...it doesn't matter. Keep her on the line, I'll get Des" Kali exclaimed, grinning at Charlie, before she rushed out of the room.
"Des! Des, it's Penny!" Kali called out to him, watching as the older man froze.
"She's...she found me?" Desmond questioned, looking happier than she had ever seen him.
"Get over here!" Kali giggled, waving over to him, as she walked back towards the doorway.
He almost slipped into the moonpool as he ran over to her as quick as he could, held down by the heavy equipment he now had on his back. But nothing was going to stop him from seeing his girlfriend. Not anymore.
"What, what boat?" Kali could hear Penny's voice from inside the room.
"Your boat, 80 miles offshore...Naomi, parachutist—" Charlie began, when Penny cut him off in a panic.
"But I'm not on a boat! Who...who's Naomi?" Penny frowned, as Kali felt her heart miss a beat.
Charlie turned to Kali, a horrified look in his eyes as they realised what her words meant. If the boat wasn't from Penny, then who was it from? Who was looking for the island? Before Kali had a split second to react, Penny's face disappeared from the screen, as it went completely black. Desmond was now close by her side, having heard Penny's last sentence, the same questions Kali had on his lips. A loud siren began, as the lights in the station started flickering red. All of a sudden, the large metal door to the signal room slammed shut, just as a fire door would in the case of a blaze.
"Charlie? Charlie!" Kali yelled, banging her fist on the door, watching as the blond turned back to the control panel.
Fear coursed through Charlie's veins as he saw the words that now flashed up on the screen above the panel.
Self-destruct initiated.
"N-no, no...what's happening? Charlie!" Kali shouted, desperately trying to pull the door open, but the handles wouldn't budge an inch.
Kali felt a shiver go down her spine when she heard laughter behind her, twisting around to find Greta still on the floor, giggling manically to herself. While Desmond continued trying to open the door, Kali rushed over to the blonde, hauling her up to onto her feet, slamming her into one of the walls, a murderous expression on her face.
"What the fuck is this?" Kali spat out.
"Good Vibrations is the code to stopping the jamming signal...but without the second code, only known by myself and Ben...the station self-destructs" Greta informed her, as Kali's eyes widened.
"You just signed your own death warrant" Greta smirked, as Kali's jaw clenched.
"What's the second code?" Kali questioned.
"It doesn't matter. Once the self-destruct starts, it can't be stopped. We're all already dead" Greta told her.
"I am not dying here today!" Kali exclaimed, before slamming the woman's head into the wall, knocking her out cold.
"Kali! I need something to—" Desmond's panicked voice was cut off as a loud bang rang out from behind Kali.
She twisted around to find there was now a large hole in the opposite wall of the station, as water instantly began to flood through. She raced back towards Desmond when another explosion erupted right beside her, throwing her off her feet, as she almost fell into the moonpool which was sloshing from side to side. A moment later, she felt a hand grabbing onto her shoulder, helping to haul her upright as another explosion occurred close to the signal room. Kali realised in horror the walls of the station must have been loaded with dynamite. The whole station was a death trap. Desmond was standing in front of her, saying something but the ringing in her ears was too loud. Water had already started splashing at her ankles as the station filled with water, making her realise something in a panic. She was running towards the control room before Desmond could stop her, but she was too late. By the time she reached the door, she could see the window had already been blown in and water was surging into the room. Charlie was still clutching onto the handle of the door, his head leaning against the glass as if he had already accepted his fate.
"No. No, you are not dying on me" Kali mumbled, shaking as she watched the water filling the room, already up to his thighs.
"Shit, Kali...the moonpool..." Desmond exclaimed, as she twisted around to see a metal cover enclosing their only exit.
If it closed, they would be trapped within the station. She turned back to the door, grabbed a nearby fire extinguisher and tried to break the glass window, but it was no good. She dropped the object to the ground, watching as it dropped below the water surface that had reached above her ankles now. Her eyes snapped back up to the window, seeing the water racing through the shattered glass, already up to Charlie's waist. He wouldn't last more than a few minutes. And neither would they. Charlie's eyes connected with hers, as he gave her a sad smile, before mouthing something to her.
Go.
Her face crumbled, as she shook her head, wanting nothing more than to scream. Instead, she turned back to Desmond, who still hadn't moved, despite knowing their time was almost up. Kali's eyes flickered to the moonpool that was almost completely enclosed by the metal cover now, as she made her decision.
"I'm sorry" She exclaimed, before pulling the man into a quick hug, letting out a soft sob.
Desmond returned the hug just a tightly, gripping onto her shoulders, not feeling how Kali reached for the grenade that he still had in his pocket. As she pulled away, she could see the confused expression on his face, not understanding her words. Before he could stop her, she had leant down and grabbed the fire extinguisher, slamming the heavy object against his head, as he stumbled backwards. She caught him before he could fall, luckily not having knocked him out, only dazing him. She pulled his arm over her shoulder, dragging him towards the moonpool, as he let out a groan, clutching his injured head. Desmond's eyes shot open when she thrust the mouthpiece of the BCD against his lips, hauling him over the moonpool edge, as the metal cover neared them.
"You find Penny" Kali insisted, as Desmond shook his head, in a panic, realising what she was about to do.
With all her strength, she pushed him into the moonpool, as he desperately tried to hold onto her, but his grip wasn't strong enough. She watched as he disappeared under the water's surface just as the moonpool cover closed with a creak. Another loud explosion caused her to stumble backwards, as she turned to see the one window in the station had been blown up, causing streams of water to surge in. It wouldn't be long until the whole station was underwater. She clenched her jaw as she realised, she had just given up her one chance of escape. But she had made a promise. She was going to save Charlie.
Charlie's eyes fluttered open as he heard a tapping sound coming from the door, having resigned himself to his fate. The water had almost completely filled the room, causing him to swim to the top. He saw Kali's face through the small window in the door, narrowing his eyes when he saw her holding something in her hand. He was swimming backwards a moment later when he realised it was a grenade in her palm. He placed his hands over his ears, and scrunched his eyes shut, waiting for Kali's last-ditch attempt. The sound of the explosion was muffled by the water, but suddenly he was being thrown forward as the door came off its hinges and the water that had been drowning him flooded into the station. He let out a gasp when someone was suddenly pulling at his arm, as he was dragged out of the fast-flowing water, his body colliding with another. He looked up to see Kali clutching onto him, as a grin grew on his lips.
"Like I said... the craziest woman I've ever met" Charlie exclaimed, holding onto her as tight as he could.
"I don't go back on my promises, Charlie" Kali told him, her eyes already surveying the station for any way out.
"The oxygen tanks...come on, at least it'll buy us some time" Kali insisted, as they started to wade through the water which had risen to their thighs.
They held onto each other as the powerful force of the water threw them from side to side, forcing them into the middle of the room. Kali's eyes flickered to the wall opposite the control room, hearing how it creaked. God, was the whole station about to be pulled apart? She quickened her pace, still holding onto Charlie's slippery hand as they made it to the oxygen tanks. Her brow furrowed when she found the nearest oxygen tank was empty, throwing it away and grabbing the next one. Panic started to claw away at her as she found the next one had a crack in it, now empty too. She ripped open a nearby cupboard, praying there would be more tanks inside, but there was nothing but diving suits.
"Fuck. Fuck, I gave Desmond one of those..." Kali trailed off, realising there might not have been any oxygen in his tank.
"Hey, don't. You saved him. I know you did" Charlie insisted, as the water splashed against his face.
Kali looked down to find the water had suddenly risen over her waist, the cold seeping into her bones. How much time did they have?
"C'mon, maybe we can get out through the window" Kali suggested, dragging Charlie towards the shattered window, where water was pouring in.
As soon as they neared it, they were soon pushed back by the strong force of the water, as she realised there was no way they would be able to swim through. The water would rise and rise until they were pushed to the ceiling, and soon after that...they would drown.
"Where...where's Greta? She might know a way out..." Kali trailed off, searching the water, finding the blonde face down only a few metres away.
She rushed over to her, dragging her onto her back, surprised to find the woman was still conscious. Why hadn't she been fighting against the water?
"Where's the oxygen? You must have more?!" Kali questioned, the panic clear in her tone.
"Even if we did have any, I wouldn't tell you" Greta spat out, shoving Kali away from her.
"So, that's it? You're just gonna' fucking give up?" Kali retorted.
"Better to die here than out there" Greta mumbled.
"What..." Kali trailed off, as she watched Greta lower herself to her knees, submerging herself under the water.
She watched in horror as the blonde clutched onto the metal flooring below them, bowing her head as she started to shake. She was...drowning herself. Kali stumbled backwards in horror, as she watched the woman's body violently shake under the surface. Almost a minute passed when she heard something similar to a scream come from her, muffled by the water, before she slowly went still. Kali felt Charlie come to stand beside her, as they watched Greta's body slowly start to float to the surface, limp. She was dead.
"Is that what's gonna' happen to us?" Charlie gulped.
"No. T-there's always a way. There has to be" Kali insisted, to herself more than to Charlie.
She looked down to find the water was now almost covering her shoulders, realising they would have to start swimming soon. She didn't want to drown again. She couldn't. Anything but that.
Just as she opened her mouth to speak or scream, they heard a strange sound from the nearby wall. Kali couldn't believe her eyes when they saw a phone attached to the wall. A phone that was ringing. She swam towards the phone, thinking it would be quicker than running through the water, and grabbed the device, as it almost fell into the water due to how slippery her hands were.
"H-hello?" She stuttered, only realising now how cold she had become.
"Kal?" A familiar voice replied, as Kali let out a relieved sound.
It was her brother.
"Ken, I...I'm in trouble—" Kali began, but he quickly cut her off.
"I know. You're in the Looking Glass Station. You shouldn't have gone with him. Dammit, Kali. Why couldn't you have just stayed away from this?" Ken sighed.
"The water's getting in, we don't have a way out. What do...what do I do?" She asked, as the water started to reach the phone.
"...By the control room, there's a box high on the wall. Do you see it?" Ken asked, as her eyes snapped up.
"Yeah, yeah, I see it. Is it a way out?" Kali questioned.
"There's dynamite in there. Leftovers from what they used to rig the station. You shoot it, and it'll blow the wall up" Ken explained, as Kali's forehead wrinkled.
"But...an explosion that big, it'll knock us out..." Kali trailed off, realising her brother's intentions.
"At least you won't be awake when—this is your only way out" Ken stated, in a pained tone.
"No. You don't understand. Charlie's here, he'll die! I'm not...there has to be a way!" Kali insisted.
"I'm sorry" Ken replied, as she let out a cry.
"...No. I'm not doing it. I'm not fucking doing it" She exclaimed, slamming the phone down on the wall.
Only a few seconds later the phone became completely emerged, as Kali ran a wet hand over her face. She let out a cry of frustration, her hands balled into fists. She could feel how the water was coming in faster and faster, her feet now nowhere near the ground. Kali flinched when she felt Charlie touch her shoulder, twisting around to find him giving her a sad smile. She was already starting to get tired from swimming. They weren't going to make it, she realised.
"It's okay. It's okay, Kali" He told her, as her bottom lip trembled.
"N-no. I was...I was supposed to save you...I promised..." She cried, feeling tears welling in her eyes.
"You promised I wasn't gonna' die alone. You've done that" He insisted, wiping away at a tear that trailed down his own cheek.
"I can't do this again. I can't lose anyone else" Kali sobbed, as he clutched at her shoulder tighter.
"You know, before I came to this island, my life...my life wasn't going anywhere. I wasn't anything anymore. And now, I met all of you, and I can die happy knowing that you're gonna' get off this island. You all will" Charlie explained, as Kali nodded, not wanting to tell him the truth.
"We don't have to...we could just wait. Try to swim out when the station fills up—" Kali began, but Charlie shook his head.
"I don't want...I want it to be quick, yeah? That wall explodes, knocks us out, it'll just take a second, right?" Charlie stated.
"You'll still die" Kali cried.
"I died a long time ago really. When Ethan hung me from that tree, I died. Did Jack ever tell you?" Charlie asked, as Kali shook her head.
"He brought me back. Just like he always does, right? But I reckon I was supposed to die that day, wasn't I? That's why the island keeps trying to kill me. I'm supposed to be dead" Charlie realised.
"Well, fuck this island. Fuck fate. You were supposed to get out of here. To live the rest of your life with Claire and Aaron" Kali exclaimed, as a smile grew on Charlie's lips.
"Promise me something. Promise me you'll get Aaron home" Charlie asked, as she nodded slowly.
"I'll save him. I swear" Kali replied, as Charlie lent forward to press a kiss on her forehead.
"C'mon, we need to find that gun" He murmured, pulling away, as they both dove under the water.
It didn't take long, as they found the gun near the moonpool cover, as Charlie grabbed it and they both swum back to the surface. Kali shivered as she saw the station was already half filled with water, the dynamite box almost submerged itself. The roar of the water racing into the station was becoming almost deafening. Her legs and arms ached from having to keep swimming, freezing cold from being so deep down in the ocean. It was now or never.
"You think it'll still work?" Kali questioned, as Charlie gripped the gun tightly in his hand.
"Yeah. Yeah, I think it will" Charlie replied, knowing his luck had run out long ago.
"Are you sure about this?" Kali insisted.
"I'm not gonna' let this island kill me. I'm going out on my own terms. Fuck fate, right?" Charlie exclaimed as Kali let out a laugh tinged with sadness.
"I'm gonna' see you again. I will" Kali told him, before she wrapped her arms around his shoulders.
"Not too soon, okay?" Charlie replied, clutching onto her back with one hand.
Still holding onto each other, Charlie raised his arm out, aiming the gun with the dynamite box. A smile grew on his lips, as for one of the first times in his life, he truly didn't feel alone. The fear seemed to seep out of his bones, as he closed his eyes, took his last breath, and pulled the trigger.
A second later, everything else disappeared, no sound, no light, only the feeling of Kali still clutching onto him, as he drifted away.
A smile still on his face.
Time moved in a blur for Kali after that, as her eyes would flicker open, burning from the water surrounding her. She would open her mouth, and try to call out for Charlie, but the pressure of the water would overwhelm her. She could feel how her lungs would fill up and then...she'd drown. Again. And again. Every time she would be a little closer to the surface, but just not close enough. She couldn't catch her breath. She couldn't move. And then suddenly there was a hand on her arm, and the next time she woke up it wasn't the water surrounding her. There was the warmth of the sun on her face, and familiar eyes looking down at her. She coughed and panted, throwing herself onto her side as water spilt from her mouth, taking deep intakes of breath for what felt like the first time in years.
"Kal?" Her brother's voice questioned, a hand on her back rubbing up and down.
"C-charlie?" She asked, hoping against hope that he had somehow made it.
Ken's eyes flickered to Desmond, beside him, with tear tracks still evident on his cheeks. The older man shook his head quickly, his jaw clenched as he felt another sob threatening to leave his lips. Kali brought her legs up to her chest, hugging herself as she shook, hiding her face in her knees. Ken grimaced as his sister let out a piercing scream, the pain and frustration vibrating through his bones. She couldn't do it anymore. She just couldn't.
Sawyer paced up and down the beach, far away from the celebrations of the rest of his group. With the help of Hurley and the RV, they had managed to attack the Others by surprise and save Jin, Sayid and Bernard. Not long after, using the Others walkie, they had learnt from Jack that the jamming signal had been stopped. Kali had done it. So, where the hell was she?
"She's probably paddling back with Charlie and Desmond right now, dude" Hurley tried to convince him.
"Screw it" Sawyer mumbled, pulling his shirt off, his shoes following a moment later.
"Uh, what are you doing?" Hurley frowned, as the rest of the group joined them.
"I'm going after her" Sawyer replied.
"You can't just swim to the station. You don't even know where it is" Sayid pointed out.
"I don't care! I need to find her!" Sawyer exclaimed.
"James, you need to think this through—" Juliet started, but Sawyer was quick to cut her off.
"Right. Just like you wanted me to think before killing your buddy, Tom!" Sawyer spat out, pointing to the Other, who was still being guarded by Jin, a gun raised to his head.
"You'll get yourself killed" Juliet insisted.
"I...don't...care" Sawyer retorted, through gritted teeth, the desperation clear in his tone.
"Boat!" Jin's voice suddenly interjected as they all turned to the sea, eyes widening when they saw the raft returning.
Sawyer was racing off into the waves before anyone could stop him, panic clear on his face when he saw Kali's brother in the boat. He almost collapsed with relief when he saw the girl he was desperate to see sitting behind him. As soon as the raft was close enough, he was dragging them towards the beach, to join the others.
"Kali?" Sawyer murmured, reaching out to touch her back, as she barely seemed to even register, that he was there.
"What happened?" Sawyer questioned, as the others quickly crowded around the raft on the beach.
"We need to get to Jack. We can't let him get in touch with that boat" Desmond announced.
"Why not? The boat's already on their way" Sawyer informed them.
"Hey, where's Charlie?" Hurley realised, in a quiet tone.
"No, that woman, Naomi, she lied. The people on the boat aren't who they say they are!" Desmond insisted.
"Then who are they?" Sawyer frowned.
"Desmond, where's Charlie?" Hurley repeated, a little louder this time.
"Some very bad fucking people. Now, will you just get in touch with Jack" Ken pushed.
"It's alright, we can call him, we have a walkie. It's OK" Juliet answered, noticing that even Ken seemed unusually distressed.
"What are you doing here, Ken?" Sayid asked, the distrust clear in his tone.
"He helped me, alright? It doesn't matter, okay. We just need to warn—" Desmond began, but Hurley suddenly cut him off.
"Where's Charlie?!" Hurley shouted, half already knowing the answer.
Desmond and Ken were both silent for a moment, their eyes downcast, as Kali started to cry again. Sawyer crouched down in the sand, wordlessly pulling Kali into a hug, close against his chest. She all but collapsed against him, sobbing harder than she ever had. It was like she was broken.
"I'm, I'm sorry brother..." Desmond trailed off, as a tear rolled down his cheek.
"It's alright, blue eyes. It's okay" Sawyer soothed, cradling her head to his chest.
"What happened?" Hurley cried, as Desmond scrunched his eyes shut, looking as if he wished he could forget.
"He...he drowned. He turned the jamming signal off, but the station blew up. It was a trap" Desmond explained.
"Did you know about this?" Desmond questioned Juliet, who gave him a look of disbelief.
"How can you even ask me that?" She spat out.
"Hey, this is not Juliet's fault. I warned you. I killed that woman for a goddamn reason" Ken insisted, shoving Desmond in the chest.
"And that somehow makes you trustworthy?" Sayid huffed.
"Look, I am breaking a lot of rules just being here. But seeing as none of you clearly give a crap about my sister's life—" Ken began, but Hurley was quick to cut him off.
"That's not true" He stated, with a hurt expression.
"You sent her down there to die and you all know it!" Ken accused, as a few of them flinched from his harsh tone.
"We should call the Doc. Warn him" Sawyer suggested, a few moments later, as Kali slowly pulled away.
"Calling Jack accomplishes nothing" Sayid shook his head.
"It would accomplish warning him" Juliet scoffed, as Ken nodded.
"It also means warning the people on the freighter that we're suspicious of them. I've no doubt they're monitoring our communications, if we call Jack—" Sayid started, when Ken cut him off.
"What's he doing here?" Ken pointed to Tom, who was still being guarded by Jin.
"He's our prisoner. And far more useful than you, I might add" Sayid exclaimed, as Ken rolled his eyes, childishly.
"You know Sayid, I'm beginning to think you don't like me much" Ken mocked.
"Whatever gave you that idea?" Sayid replied, sarcastically.
"Enough. We need to figure out what we're going to do next—" Juliet's voice was cut off by the sound of a gunshot echoing through the air.
All eyes flickered over to Tom, who now had blood pooling underneath his shirt, right where his heart was. He flopped to the sand a moment later, as Jin looked down at his gun, knowing he hadn't fired. Tom let out a gurgling sound, his hand flailing about for a second, before he went still, the sand beneath him turning a red colour.
"Kali?" Sawyer gaped, as he realised, she had taken his gun from the waistband of his jeans.
His gaze followed her outstretched arm, where the gun was still clutched in her hand, a cold look in her eye. She then pushed herself onto shaky legs, her teeth gritted so hard they sounded like they might crack.
"Why did you do that?" Juliet gaped.
"Because I'm done. I'm getting us off this fucking island and I don't care what I have to do to save us" Kali announced, knowing firmly what she had to do.
Something in her had died down in that station with Charlie. But if it was the last thing she was going to do, she would make sure he didn't die in vain.
