Chapter 9

Soul woke to the all too familiar smell of his meister's cooking.

'That idiot, I'm supposed to cook today.'

Soul pulled himself from the comfort of his bed and made his way into the kitchen where Maka had just set down two plates of fluffy pancakes.

"Morning Soul! Good timing, I just finished." Maka chimed.

"Well you certainly sound well rested, the jet lag is so not cool."

Soul and Maka sat and enjoyed their first meal back at home. Maka couldn't help but have a sense of déjà vu. This is what their life was like before Soul's father ever contacted him. It made Maka even more determined to keep her weapon partner from going back with him.

"Thanks for the meal meister, I'll take care of the dishes."

"Okay, I'm going to finish getting ready. We need to head to the Death room and report to Lord Death." Maka disappeared down the hall as Blair trotted into the kitchen.

"Good morning Scythey boy! Did you get any sleep? You sounded restless last night!" Blair sang carefree.

What did she mean? Restless? Soul was probably as close to death as a living being could get with how settled in bed he was.

"What do you mean?" Soul questioned the feline.

"It sounded like you were in the living room a few times last night!"

Soul's heart dropped remembering the fear of being followed the day before. He made his way through the living room and once again peered out the peep hole. Nothing.

'Did someone get in the apartment? No. Maka is well rested she would have sensed them this morning at breakfast.' His meister's soul perception put him at slight ease. Maka entered the living room and saw that her weapon was a little on edge.

"Everything okay?"

"Yeah, Yeah. This damn jet lag. I'll be cool."

Soul also finished getting ready and the pair were out the front door heading towards the DWMA. Soul turned to make sure the front door was locked when he noticed a bunch of deep scratches around the keyhole. It looked like someone was trying to pick the lock, Soul turned to his meister.

"I think someone tried to get into our apartment last night." Soul showed Maka what he discovered. Maka's heart sunk and her chest heavy with fear but she did her best to hide it from her partner.

"Let's go report this to Lord Death."

*The Death Room*

Maka and Soul walked together through the red arches of the Death Room where they saw the Reaper in the middle of the room next to his giant mirror.

"Good morning Lord Death." Maka spoke for the duo.

"Good morning Scythe Meister, Maka! How are you and your partner feeling after your first extended mission?"

"Well one of us is still fighting the Jet lag but we feel great!"

"Good! However, there is one little issue. It seems that Soul Eater's Father is quite determined to find him. It looks as if he found out about your mission details and tried to sabotage it!"

"How could he have found out about our mission details?" Maka questioned, her voice shaking.

"That's what I'm trying to find out. So for now the safest place for confidential information is the Death room."

"Lord Death, I think someone tried to break into our apartment last night." Soul blurted out without a second thought.

"Hmmmm, this is quite tricky, quite tricky indeed. I'll need you two to be on alert while I put a plan together."

"That shouldn't be a problem at all!" Maka chirped, feeling reassured.

Even the overprotective weapon also began to feel at ease after the Reaper's words, despite not having a plan yet.

"Thanks, Lord Death." The pair said in unison.

With their thanks given, the Meister and her weapon left the security of the Death room. After emerging back into the DWMA their comfort began to wear off. Soul's thoughts began to wander, Is there a mole in the school again? The situation with Medusa was devastating enough without having to worry about it happening a second time.

As they walked down the hall, the pair was greeted but the famous loud self announcing ninja assassin.

"YAHOO! MY TWO BIGGEST FANS HAVE RETURNED!" Black*Star raged through the halls tackling Soul.

"Black*Star!" Soul's thoughts immediately shattered from the distraction and comfort of his best friend.

"We missed you too, Black*Star." Maka said through her lighthearted giggles.

"Welcome back you two!" the soothing voice of Tsubaki cut through Black*Star's loud laugh.

"You guys were gone for so long, I know you came back because you wanted to see more of my big show!" Black*Star stated proudly with his arm around Soul.

"Of course they did Black*Star!" Tsubaki supported with a laugh.

"Where's Kid, Liz, and Patty?" Maka asked noticing their absence.

"They just left for a mission this morning, hopefully they will be back tonight or tomorrow!" Tsubaki answered the concerned Meister.

"When they get back we should all celebrate!" Maka suggested, desperately wanting to take her mind off of the pair's recent stress.

After a bit of catching up the four students made their way to their classroom to continue on with the rest of their school day. As the day continued, Soul's worry began to flood back. They would soon be returning to their home where just the night before, someone had tried to break in. What worried Soul the most is that he didn't know what lengths his father will go to to take him back home.

The final bell rang releasing the students. The tired sun, starting to set, hung low in the sky. Soul and Maka began making their way home, making sure to stay alert as they past the darkened alleyways. The two finally make it home without incident but the constant fear and worry is taking its toll on both of them.

"I'll get started on dinner, Hopefully Blair kept up with the shopping." Soul said through a yawn.

"Sounds good, I'm definitely taking a nice relaxing bath." Maka stretched and made her way down the hall, leaving Soul to his culinary duties.

Soul waited to hear the bathroom door close when he leaned against the kitchen counter and ran his fingers through his soft snow colored hair. With a deep sigh Soul mumbled, "What the hell am I gonna do?"
