Chapter 21: Piece of the Puzzle (Kelly's POV)
"I'm a messenger. I'm one piece of a giant jigsaw puzzle."
- Simon Sinek
I left Michelle on the porch to talk to Sam and headed inside. I was furious and ready to rip into Logan for his part of it but was thrown off when I found the house eerily silent. Everyone was likely hiding out in their rooms.
I found Spike alone in the living room. He filled me in, with colourful language, on everything that had happened while I was at work, including the disposal of Maggie's body.
"That bloody bitch had it coming. If it weren't for this chip I'd have killed her myself."
I opened my mouth to reply when Michelle came back in, my phone in her hand. It was ringing as Michelle tossed it over to me, fleeing upstairs before I could say anything to stop her. I excused myself from talking with Spike and headed outside to take the call.
"Hey, Sam."
"Hey!" He seemed surprised it was me answering, his tone changing slightly. "What's going on over there? Maggie's dead? Are you guys okay?"
I sighed, of course, Michelle only told him enough of the details to make him freak out the most. "Yeah, I mean, Maggie is dead, but everyone else is fine. Michelle is physically okay."
There was a beat of silence as Sam picked up the distinction I made.
"What about Eric? He's killed a human."
"I know. We warned Maggie about sunlight and the vamps. She did this intentionally. She wanted to kill them. Eric was protecting himself and Spike."
"Will he be a risk though now that he's fed on a human?"
"No, he'll be fine. His type of vampire, they're not like that. If anything he'll be more pleasant to deal with now that he's had fresh blood." Sam's silence made me replay my words quickly. "Sorry, I sound horrible don't I?"
"No, no...I get it. Listen, we're in the middle of a job but we'll try to come by whenever we finish up here."
"Is Dean freaking out about this? I know he's not Team Eric."
"Uh, I'm actually not with him right now, but I'll find a way to tell him and keep him calm. Stay safe, okay?"
"You too, Sam."
I hung up the phone and slid it into my pocket. I rubbed my hands over my face, trying to work up the energy to deal with the minor chaos that would be awaiting me in the house once the others realized I was home. I was about to head in when Eric suddenly appeared, a lunch cooler in hand.
"Good evening." He raised the cooler, "I decided to play nice with my roommate and grab him dinner from the blood bank two towns over. Felt rude, eating in front of him." Eric's smile was unsettling.
"How considerate of you."
"So, was that the boyfriend? Ready to come to kill me?"
"Ha, no. It was Sam. They're on a job and they trust me to handle you."
His smile grew, fangs showing slightly. "Is that so? And how are you going to handle me, Miss Kelly?"
I laughed, feeling some tension release. "Listen, you make my life easier right now. You're one of the few who help out here. Maggie? I wasn't her biggest fan. Maybe it was all the times she called me a whore. Just don't kill anyone else, cool? And if you wanted to bring home a fancy espresso maker next? That would also be appreciated."
He studied my face. "You know my blood could help you with your exhaustion."
"I also know you will get in my head. So thanks, but no thanks."
He raised an eyebrow, bemusement on his face. "Are you afraid of me?"
"Do you expect me to lie and say no? You're a supercharged vampire. Yes, I'm afraid of you, but I also know you seem to like Michelle and me. Or at least tolerate us."
"This is true. Well, my offer always stands. Maybe one day you'll repay the favour."
He walked into the house with those words, leaving me alone on the porch again. I wasn't wrong, he was in a great mood.
