Chapter 23: Saying Goodbye (Kelly's POV)

"Parting is such sweet sorrow that I shall say goodnight till it be morrow."
― Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet

I reached the bottom step and took a deep breath. Knowing their plan to take Dean with them to Zach was far from ideal, but it was all they had. As I approached the panic room, Cas was standing outside, and he still looked furious. I didn't blame him.

"Cas, what chance does this plan have?"

"This is likely a suicide mission." I pulled a face. "Oh. Sorry. You expected me to lie."

"I don't know anymore to be honest. I came to say goodbye. Michelle and I have to go."

"Goodbye." Cas awkwardly nodded his head at me.

"I meant to Dean...first. Can you let me in? Close the door behind me."

I smiled weakly at Cas as he opened the door. Dean was sitting on the edge of the cot staring at his wrist handcuffed to the bed. He looked up as I walked in. Cas shut the door behind me, the clang causing me to jump. "Come to try to change my mind?"

"No. I know that's a lost cause. Came to say goodbye."

"Goodbye, huh." He looked away from me, down to the floor.

I sat next to him on the cot, putting my hand on his thigh. "Michelle and I, we have to go back to the house. I know you think you need to say yes, Sam hopes you won't. I hope you won't. I don't want this to be goodbye, but it might be."

He moved his uncuffed hand on top of mine, our fingers intertwining, his eyes still down. He hadn't made eye contact with me since I first came in. "I can't let Michael take the kid."

I moved my free hand, taking his face and turning him to look at me. I pulled him into a kiss, my hand moving from his face to the back of his neck, pulling him closer. His free hand moved from holding my hand on his leg into my hair. I finally pulled back, resting my forehead against his. "Let this be a bye and not a goodbye. Please."

I stood up and walked to the door, banging twice for Cas to let me out. I said a quick bye to Cas and headed out of the basement and towards the car without looking back at the house.
