Loss - Part Two [Intimate Moments Collection]

The next week was riddled with conflicting emotions for both Adeline and Edgar. The siblings had probably talked multiple times a day over the last week, checking in with each other, trying to gauge where one another's head space was. Both were receiving a lot of support from their respective spouses, and luckily, they weren't in any of this alone considering their spouses would ultimately be attending the funeral with them.

Saturday rolled around; the skies were blue, and the sun was shining over Syracuse. Today was the day, and to say that Edgar was nervous was an understatement. His hands trembled as he worked to try and fix his dark grey tie. He could hear Olivia pottering around; humming to herself as she finished applying the minimal amount of makeup she was wearing. He almost wanted to scoop her up and head back to the city and forget about this whole thing. "We can go back to the city, get our kid from the sitter, and go see a movie." he thought to himself.

"Dammit." He cursed to himself as he once again messed up his tie. He took a deep breath then spoke; "Liv?"

The click of her heels against the floor was heard, and before long, her voice filtered through his ears; "Yes baby?" She licked her lips as she looked at him; though today's circumstances weren't ideal, he did look extremely handsome in the black suit he was wearing.

"Can you tie this for me?" he asked, turning to face her. She stepped closer and worked quietly as she expertly fixed his tie for him. He moved one of his hands to rest on her waist while looking down at her; "Your ass looks good in this dress." He slid his hand around to squeeze her backside, which did truly look amazing in the fitted black dress she was wearing.

Olivia threw her head back and laughed; "Behave yourself." She lightly patted his chest, then simply looked up at him, staring into his eyes for a moment. Edgar knew what she was doing, leading him to look away as he muttered; "Don't do that."

"I didn't even do anything."

"You're trying to read me."

Olivia simply laughed while shaking her head; "You know me too well…" she then draped one arm around his neck while her other hand remained on his chest; "If you must know, the detective in me is screaming. You're extremely nervous, and you want to run away from all this - am I right?"

"Partly," he stared at her for a moment, only to roll his eyes when she simply raised an eyebrow at him; "Okay so...maybe you're right. This is a lot, and I kinda just wanna go back home and scoop up our kid then go see a movie. That's a better idea, right?"

"Honey, can we talk about it for a second?" Olivia remarked, her eyebrow arched. Edgar nodded his head, leading Olivia to tug at his hand as they made their way over to the bed. Edgar sat down on the foot of the bed first, then Olivia lowered herself to sit on his lap. He rubbed his hand over her hip as she sat down.

"I know you want to run away, and believe me, I was once - actually still am sometimes - the poster child for running away from a shitty situation and pretending it's not happening, but that's not the answer...okay?" she stroked her fingers over his cheek and continued.

"As you know, my mother and I did not have the healthiest relationship. We didn't talk for quite a few years, not until after I joined the force. We had a good few years before she died, and I'll be honest and say I almost didn't go to her funeral. I was like you - wondering if I really should even bother. I barely dealt with it; I took one day off for arrangements then went on like nothing was wrong. But then I started to think about it; I couldn't get the time back that we'd lost and running from it wasn't going to solve anything. I went to her funeral, and as angry as I was about her drinking again, I was more so relieved that at least now, she had found some peace that she had been searching for since the moment she had her innocence snatched away. It sucked that it came to this, but I got to say goodbye in my own way."

She shrugged a little while still looking at him; "I'm not trying to tell you what to do, but I do know that running from this situation won't make it go away. I think you should at least go to the funeral, say goodbye in your own way, then we can move forward."

Edgar took in everything she was saying. She had a valid point, and being the type of person he was, he was never one to run away from a situation anyway. It was nice to get his wife's viewpoint on this, and he was truly thankful for her and her encouragement. Truthfully if he had come up here by himself, he would have just bailed on this whole thing and gone home. However, he also knew that running away and not dealing with it would make him feel worse, so he would just go through with it.

He leaned in and pressed a soft kiss to his wife's lips while squeezing her hip. She deepened the kiss just a little, then pulled back while stroking her thumb over his cheek; "Are we good now?"

"We're good," He nodded his head, giving her a smile;

"Come on, let's go get this over with."

The sun beamed down over the vast cemetery that belonged to the tall, brick church at the heart of downtown. There were a lot of people headed in the direction of the grave site or already standing over there. A lot of these individuals were family members that Edgar didn't know, leading him to look around with a slightly panicked look on his face as he tried to find the familiar person - his sister Adeline and her husband Sam. Olivia could sense his nerves and so simply squeezed his hand while whispering "Relax."

Edgar nodded his head before tugging her along further as they continued down the path of the cemetery. They were halfway to the grave site when they heard a familiar voice calling out for them, leading them to both turn around to see who it was: Adeline and Sam.

They all shared warm hugs and Adeline spoke up; "You guys are really lucky I didn't bail; Sam talked sense into me."

"Olivia talked some sense into me too because trust me, the idea of driving back to the city at this moment was suddenly the best idea ever." Edgar remarked.

"It's a good thing you both married cops; talking people out of making mistakes is what we do best." Sam chimed in, earning a laugh from them all while Olivia nodded in agreement.

"It's what we do; make sure you don't do something you regret." she smirked, leading them all to let out a little laugh again.

As they approached the grave site, a few people here and there came to speak to them as they recognized Adeline and Edgar from when they were smaller. A few were some cousins that they didn't really know, others were a few aunts and uncles. Everyone was nice as they introduced themselves, but there were also some other people around who were either wondering who they were or why they were there. Erica - their cousin and the longtime caretaker of their birth parents - did come over to speak to them and even took the liberty of inviting Edgar and Adeline to sit with some other family members - including their birth mother - closer to the front of the small crowd. The siblings declined; partly because they wanted to stay back, and partly because neither of them wanted to leave their respective spouses right now.

Pretty soon, the small graveside service began. Edgar gripped Olivia's hand as they stayed towards the middle of the small crowd with Adeline and Sam beside them. They were four individuals that felt very out of place, and though this was a lot to take in for both Edgar and Adeline, they were certainly glad that they were not only going through this together but with their respective spouses.

The service was short but moving, with a few songs here and there and a lot of kind words from family and others that had known Richard Brown for many years. Even Adeline and Edgar's cousin Erica stood up to say some kind words. Eventually, the service came to a close and those close to Richard threw flowers onto the casket as it was lowered to the ground. Adeline was leaned into Sam as she felt such a weird mixture of emotions going through her head, while Edgar was still holding onto Olivia's hand, rubbing with his thumb, seemingly drawing a lot of strength from her.

As the crowd began to disperse, Erica came over with a frail older woman. Edgar greeted his birth mother - Glenda - with a slightly nervous smile but gave her a hug nonetheless, and she smiled at both him and Olivia as it was nice to see them again. However, when she saw Adeline, little tears pricked her vision as finally, for the first time in roughly forty years, she was seeing her daughter yet again. Edgar was initially wary of how Adeline would react, but after a few moments of just staring at one another, Adeline wrapped the older woman in a warm embrace.

They talked for some time before Erica mentioned that they were going to head back to the house for something to eat. She told them that they were more than welcome to join them, but both Adeline and Edgar declined. Erica understood and thanked them all for coming before heading off - after a promise to stay in touch, of course. Soon enough, both Adeline and Edgar and their spouses were headed towards the cemetery exit as well as they'd had enough of this long day.

Sam suggested that they all go to a nearby restaurant and have something to eat together, to which they all agreed as that was a lot more chilled compared to being around a bunch of family members that they didn't know. As they slipped into their cars to head to the restaurant, Olivia looked over at Edgar with a smile on her lips. Edgar raised an eyebrow as he started the engine; "Why are you looking at me like that?"

"I'm just really proud of you; I'm proud of you and Adeline," Olivia then reached over and stroked his cheek with her thumb; "You guys survived this day, and don't you feel a whole lot better?"

"I actually do," he glanced over at her as he began driving; "I feel like a weight has been lifted; so, I feel good."

"I'm glad, because you were definitely ready to bail this morning."

Edgar let out a laugh while nodding his head; "Honest to God if I had come up here by myself, I would have bailed for sure."

Pretty soon, they pulled up at the restaurant that they had all decided on for a bite to eat. Once they were out of the car, Edgar stopped on the sidewalk for a moment and pulled Olivia closer to him. She gazed up at him while resting her hands on his biceps; "What?"

"I'm just really glad to have you," he replied, "Thank you for doing this with me; I couldn't have done it without you."

"You know I've always got your back," she slid one of her arms up around his neck; "You don't have to do anything alone anymore either, my love."

Edgar gave her his breathtaking smile. What a blessing it was to have this woman as his wife. She was his best friend, his guiding light, his protector; she was everything to him and he was truly grateful.

She stood up on her toes and pressed a delicate kiss to his lips, only for them both to be interrupted when Adeline's voice was heard; "Get a room!"

The two pulled apart and shared a laugh as they shook their heads in despair. Olivia leaned up for a brief moment to kiss Edgar's cheek then she whispered in his ear; "We have a room, and we'll use it later."

Edgar smirked and gave her an affectionate squeeze before leading her further into the restaurant. He knew that with Olivia by his side, anything was possible. He was grateful for her; she was his world, and she always would be, forever more.

I hope you all enjoyed this piece, and I hope you all continue to enjoy the way I breathe life into a character that we only saw a few minutes of. We probably won't get to see him again or see anything fresh and new; at this point, it's all predictable. But if I can at least do a little something different and breathe life into this character that I thought (and that a lot of us thought...) had potential, then so be it.

Anyway, leave your reviews. Stay safe out there; love to you all. Until next time xo
