AN: Still going with the summary but approaching it slightly differently

Chapter Two

2.1

Anna once again looked at her phone and gripped it, biting her top lip. If Will had made it to the hotel then they would have known to tell him about her calling to check for him. Knowing William, he would have gone to the room and either called her or called production to say that he had a message from her. He was respectful like that. He was dependable like that and those were only two of the reasons she was madly in love with him.

And yet there was nothing. No call. No message.

"Looks like we'll only be shooting for another hour," one of the other actresses said on the phone and Anna looked to her. This would be the last scene so it was either an hour for all of them or she would be there for only a little more over an hour. Right now sixty minutes felt like an eternity but she would make it through so that she would be able to find out what Will's story was.

"Bit worried about that nerdy husband of yours?" Danny, a promising American actor playing the role of a lovesick puppy who helped Anna said as he sat down opposite her. Anna looked away, trying to distance herself from this gossip. She never really liked to talk about Will and Elizabeth with people she didn't truly trust.

"He's gone on a vacation," Anna told him. "I think it's normal to check with people after they've taken flights."

"Just the ones that have taken flights?" Danny asked and Anna took a sip of her water and looked away. There was something to say about the acting industry. These people seemed to be manufactured with how boring they were all down to the identical flaws. Something just didn't sit right with her and it was a gut instinct that challenged her. William had to be okay. He was usually safe. He usually didn't do anything too reckless and maybe boring and safe wouldn't do Danny any good but it was what she wanted.

Well, she took a deep breath in and went over to hair and makeup so they could check her before they carried on with the filming.

"What do you think is wrong with him, Doctor?" a nurse asked as he came up to the doctor who was going to be treating their John Doe. They weren't uncommon to the New York hospital with the number of homeless people but this one had been in a taxi and had gone into the water and somehow this man had survived. The driver of the taxi and the passengers in another car had all died, in fact the deaths were in double digits due to the storm.

This man here, this survivor had obviously been hurt, damaged in ways that no one obviously wanted to go through. Some of his bones were cracked and broken whilst other parts of his body were dislocated, they hadn't had time to examine his spine as much as they wanted to, and his face had to be heavily bandaged since it had been so scarred, cut up, and the man looked disfigured. That's why they weren't able to tell who it was. The man had looked as if he had come out of one of those chilling body horror movies.

Until they were able to check the area for any identifying items then they wouldn't be able to figure out who the survivor was. All they could do was consider him a John Doe. The only thing that the man had had which had not become scraps of fabric or destroyed was the ring on his finger, a wedding ring, few men had engagement rings – not impossible but it was more likely a wedding ring.

Another nurse approached them and looked up at the doctor, "Doctor Murphy," she said before holding up a celebrity gossip magazine. "I know that there was a lot of dirt on the outside of the ring but could it be this one?" she asked and there was a picture of William and Anna celebrating Anna's birthday. The birthday girl was trying to hide her face with one hand but was laughing whilst William kissed her cheek and she was curled in towards him. In the photo was the ring, the same one on the John Doe's hand.

"I would never have been able to recognize him with the amount of damage," the doctor said, "but it appears to be the same ring. I'll let the chief know that we suspect our John Doe is William Thacker. We still need to do some surgery on him, run some tests, but let's hope he successfully pulls through."

"Should we be expecting the media?" the first nurse asked and the doctor sighed.

"I don't know," he told him, "I really don't know."

William wasn't sure what was going on, the only thing he knew was that he was in a lot of pain and most likely a hospital but he knew he had plunged into water whilst being in a taxi. How long he had been there, why he couldn't feel his body, and what his condition was were all an unknown to him and as he kept falling in and out of consciousness it remained even more of a blur.

He could hear the sound of people talking outside in the hallway but the voices just seemed like noise to him. He sighed as he tried to steady himself but then when he heard Anna's name he closed his eyes painfully and attempted to move. He didn't want for them to contact her. She was filming and he was only a small part of her life.

He had really been a nobody when he had met her and the fact that she had fallen in love with him when she could have easily stolen the heart of one of the many more men who had offered theirs to her made him feel that he had been lucky and not successful by earning it but lucky. He had been lucky that she had fallen in love with him, lucky that he had married her, beyond lucky to have Elizabeth.

He saw a doctor approach him, "Are you awake?" he asked and William stared at him again. He wasn't sure but he knew he didn't want Anna to be inconvenienced with his filming.

"Don't call her," Will heard himself say in little more than a whisper. Something sounded wrong in his voice as if his lip was sagging, was his jaw broken? He almost felt himself falling asleep again and the doctor stared at him.

"Your wife?" he asked and William nodded but then flinched in pain. "Are you Mr. William Thacker?" he asked and William gave a soft nod but knew that the emergency contact was Anna, why wouldn't it be Anna? He knew that he wouldn't be able to care for himself and so he would be relying on her but her shoot…he knew how much this movie meant to her career.

"Pl-l-ease," he whispered before feeling a deep shock through his body and felt the pain of maybe there being something wrong with him. He heard the doctor again before he found himself to throw up and then pass out.

"Patient is showing signs of sepsis."

After filming had taken place, Anna went back to her dressing room attempting to figure out what to do. Nobody had any messages from William and she hadn't received any missed phone calls from him. She knew he liked to adventure and be a rebel at times – although he didn't really understand much about rebellion -but he had always been dependable and she had found it easy to contact him.

She was about to try to call him again when the phone rang whilst she was holding it. She felt as if her breath was stolen from her as she saw the number for a hospital in New York. What had happened? Is this what had happened to William? Had he been hurt in an accident? "Hello, this is Anna Thacker speaking," she told him. Anna Scott would be her professional name but she had the belief that the hospital wasn't calling her on professional grounds.

"Ms. Thacker, this is North Shore Hospital," the caller said, "and we're calling you because your husband, William Thacker has been in a near fatal car accident and is currently on life support at our hospital. We are calling you to info-"

"Can I see him?" Anna asked. She knew that she would have to get the okay from the director but they had to let her see him, right? She was the star but she also was involved in a life and death situation of her husband. They had to let her see her spouse, didn't they?

"Yes, we have visiting hours from eight to eight," the woman said again and Anna nodded. She wasn't sure how soon she could get there to be with him but there had to be a flight or something or a train or someway for her to be there with him as soon as possible, holding his hands and providing her love.

"Thank you, do you need anything further from me? Details on health insurance? I know that William has traveler's insurance and that the number for his account it - let me get that," Anna said before hearing the girl sigh.

"Your voice is as lovely as always. Ms. Scott you are always so perfect in your movies. It's like watching an angel dance. You're truly what I believe an angel would sound like," the woman said and Anna hesitated for a second but then steadied herself and pulled out the information she carried with her in case either Will or Elizabeth got into trouble.

"Thank you, William's account number is -" she looked at the paperwork before hearing the woman sigh again as if she were on some kind of very romantic date. Of course Anna had heard people speak this way to her before but this was different. This was an emergency.

"I'll be able to see you, right?" the woman said, "When are you coming?"

"Do you need any further information on my husband?" Anna asked and just heard silence on the phone. She hated when this happened especially now. William needed her and instead she had to deal with someone who was blind by the celebrity starlight. If only she were a normal woman, she could have been with her husband by this point.
