Chapter 4: The Gummi Ship

Donald and Goofy nodded.

But Donald was the first to speak, "Sora, before we go sailin' around, I gotta teach ya something. " Donald began to concentrate and what was a tiny fireball at the edge of Donald's staff became a giant fireball that flew off into the distance.

Sora swore he could hear an "Ow!" in the distance. "Wow, can I try?"

Donald nodded.

Sora then attempted the spell, which came to him easily, as he had a keyblade. "That's so cool!

Goofy nodded. "Sure is! But you gotta know how'ta manuever yourself to avoid damage in the first place"

Goofy was all about defensive maneuvers. "Dodge roll here is a very simple maneuver. You basically just roll yourself up into a ball and hope for the best." Goofy demonstrated by Dodge Rolling into a Moogle.

Let's just say the prices of the goods would be high on other worlds.

Sora attempted to do the same. "I think I feel sick, but I did it!" Sora moaned.

Donald rolled his eyes. "I think we're ready to go to the ship, it's just near the exit."

After Donald and Goofy told him where the ship was, Sora bolted over to the ship that was stationed near the Traverse Town exit, with Donald and Goofy close behind.

Sora took in the Gummi ship in all its beauty, it was just so pretty. "Wow, I never thought traveling in space would be so cool! It looks ginormous too! Man, I wish Riku and Kairi were here to see this ship that could travel the worlds! Riku and Kairi—-" Sora looked down in shame and began to cry from guilt. He'd been so caught up in the thought of traveling the worlds that he forgot Kairi and Riku were missing.

Donald put his hand on Sora, in a comforting manner. "Sora, don't be sad! This ship runs on happy faces!"

Goofy looked at Sora, and told him "So you gotta stay positive and keep smilin'!"

Sora only stood there in shock. "This ship runs on happy faces?"

Donald and Goofy both nodded.

Sora began to panic. "Happy faces? I can't be happy all the time! One day we're gonna be stranded in space because we weren't happy enough and, and it'll spiral out of control and–"

Sora then bolted away from there, looking for someone who could teach him how to make a proper spaceship engine that ran on fuel! Or even better… a dematerialization circuit. Sora was a big fan of Doctor Who, his favorite sci-fi show, and it influenced him and his desire to see other worlds.

Cid! That'd be who would know! He's a shopkeep and sure to have seen people who know how to do it. And besides, from the games he'd played, Cid was a pilot! That was Sora's thoughts as he burst through the door to Cid's shop.

The shopkeep seemed to jump as Sora burst through the door. "Sora, whatcha doing here? Aren't ya supposed to be stopping the heartless?"

Sora panted, "I can't fight the darkness if I'm stuck in space when I'm sad! I need to know how to make gummi components Cid! Could you pleaaaase teach me?" Sora even gave Cid puppy eyes!

Cid stroked an imaginary goatee. "Hmm, you know what Kid, I'll teach you the basics, but you're gonna need to know some pretty advanced math to do this sorta stuff.

Sora laughed. "There's a reason I was called the math wiz back on Destiny Islands, and it wasn't because I was good at arithmetic. Don't tell anyone, but I was reading a functional analysis textbook before I got here."

Cid seemed to ponder it for a moment. "Okay, kid, I don't know what that means, so it seems like you'd be able to create a Gummi component."

Sora seemed to pipe up at that.

At that moment, Donald and Goofy ran into Sora, and they tumbled into the ground.

Sora pushed them off of him. "No way am I going on that Death Trap that requires positivity to function, no sirree."

Donald tried to object. "But Sora the Worlds!"

Sora put a finger to Donald's beak. "Donald, we're no use to the worlds if we're stranded in space! Now I'm gonna learn how to make something so that we aren't reliant on positivity."

Donald tried to tell Sora about how the Gummi ship could use other fuel, but the power of the shushing finger was too great.

Goofy put his hand on Donald's shoulder. "Maybe we should let him do this. That way, he'll be able to get us out of sticky situations!"

Donald seemed to consider this for a while and eventually nodded at Sora.

Sora was ecstatic at the news that his companions wouldn't stop him from learning about Gummi Ships.

Cid coughed. "If you guys need to go soon, I think I can teach this kid in one cycle. He knows the math, and the rest just follows."

A day later, they began their lessons. The first one was on "Basic Gummi Component Design."

Cid began to lecture. "So first you gotta design your component for its functionality. For example, a gummi engine is aerodynamically shaped and can net you energy from positive emotion…."

Two weeks later, during a tiring Gummi theory lesson from Cid, Sora finally was going to ask him about the dematerialization circuit is possible.

Sora raised his hand. "Do you know if a dematerialization circuit is possible?"

Cid chuckled. "Kid, that right there is a new idea. It's certainly very advanced by its verbiage. Can you tell me what it is?"

Sora was eager to respond. "It's basically a device that allows a ship to silently vanish from a location and appear at a location elsewhere. It's so we don't have to rely on positive emotions."

Cid pondered this for a moment. "I think if anyone can do it, you can. Hey, wait, ships don't exclusively run on positive emotions! Thats only if there's no energy from the ambient light in space!"

Sora stood there dumbstruck. "Oh," was all the kid could manage to say.

Cid pointed to the board. "Either way, we have to complete this lesson on Advanced Gummi Modules."

Finally, after a week of drilling the knowledge about "Quantum Gummi Design," the state-of-the-art knowledge about Gummis, Sora was ready to start on his project.

Toiling day and night, Sora worked on the component, until, another Cycle later, he had figured it out.

Sora facepalmed. "Of course, it was so simple! The Quantum Regulator and the Position Fixer together with some minor components should do it!"

So, in Cid's lab, Sora began creating the component, which took a week.

Now it was time to test it. Sora asked Cid, Donald, and Goofy to come and see the working prototype.

Sora entered the Ship. "As you can see, the dematerialization circuit has been added to the ship. If I pull this lever here, I should be transported to the Third District."

So, Sora pulled it, and the ship began to disappear. "See you at the Third District!"

The makeshift team ran to the Third District, where Sora was already waiting for them outside of the ship.

Sora smirked. "So what'dya think?"

Cid seemed to well up with tears. "Sora, by the power vested in me as the head of the Gummi Ship University, I declare that you are a Master in Gummi Creation. You've just done the impossible!"

Donald and Goofy were too shocked to speak. The Keybearer wasn't so stupid after all, only somewhat stupid. After all, he believed their "This Ship Runs on Happy Faces schtick."

Sora smiled and gave a hug to Cid. "Thanks, Cid! I couldn't have done it without you! I'm gonna tinker some more with the controls, see what worlds I can map out, but Donald and Goofy, go celebrate!"

Sora quickly climbed in and hit the Randomize location button. He arrived in an Arabic world, so he jotted the Location down and pressed Randomize again. There he saw a Jungle landscape, complete with Gorillas, Hunters, and is that a Tiger chasing him!? He quickly jotted the location down and frantically hit the Randomize button to take him somewhere else.

He heard a crackle sound, and he was transported to empty space. He noticed a small figure in the distance, who seemed to have red hair, and was wearing the exact same clothes Kairi had before—

He had an air module, so he leapt out of the ship and began to kick his way towards her. He had Kairi in his arms and he felt something leaving his chest. Kairi began to snore and Sora quickly brought her back to the Ship.

He then saw a faint glimmer of silver, and Sora almost bolted out of there. But, it was not in fact Riku. In fact, his ship began to dematerialize and Sora rushed to get back in. It was the emergency power protocols kicking in, sending the Gummi ship back to the First District.

Donald and Goofy were getting nervous. Sora hadn't come back for an hour, and they were sure tinkering didn't take that long. But they were relieved to see the faint outline of the red and yellow ship they came here in. They both shouted, "Sora, don't you ever do that again."

But Sora didn't respond. Instead, an auburn-haired girl stepped out, with a keyblade, Destiny's Embrace in hand. "Where's Sora?"

Sora was trying to breathe normally, as to avoid his lungs exploding, but he was weakening. He saw a silver round stone, engraved in what seemed to be Gallifreyan, from Doctor Who, so he grabbed it. Suddenly, the face began to open up, and Sora ended up sucked inside.
