It took a long time before a result of the testing came back. It said what they had known: Kicker and Biter were the biological sons of James and Anne Possible. They hugged them again and cried some more. Red gathered the rest of her family. "We should– We should go."

James Possible frowned. "Go where, young lady?"

She held her chin up. "Back to the laboratory. To get Metis back."

"There's no getting Metis back," Helios whispered.

"Anything's possible," she replied.

James Possible smiled. "For a Possible."

Red frowned. "What?"

He laughed. "Oh, old family motto."

"Oh."

He looked at Anne Possible. "Red– We've been talking."

She narrowed her eyes. "About what?"

"About you." He sat on the floor beside her. "You see, Anne and I, we always did want a bigger family. Do any of you have families to go to?"

One by one they shook their heads.

"I didn't think so. The way you talk about it– anyway. Red, how would you like to be part of our family?"

She frowned. "Just me?"

"No no no; no, all of you."

"All– And we can stay– Here with you?"

"Exactly."

She looked around the others, lingering the longest on Yellow. Helios was still… Helios.

"What do you think?"

"I… It might be nice," said Yellow.

"And we'd all be together," said Winter.

Red looked down at Flare and then back to James Possible. "I… I think we'd like that."

She sat in the garden that night and stared up at the sky. Could Metis see the sky, where she was now? Could Alarm? Could Growl?

No.

Because Metis was–

And Alarm was–

And Growl—

And there was no getting them back.

Anne Possible left the house to sit with her. "What are you doing out here?"

"Thinking," she replied.

"About anything in particular?"

"My family."

Anne Possible reached out to touch her arm and snatched her hand back at Red's growl. "You're all safe here now."

"But we're not."

Anne Possible met her eyes, and there was something there that Red had only ever seen in one other person, a kind of calm knowing, like she could make anything happen. "You are. I promise. We'll make sure of it."

Red shook her head. "But Growl isn't here."

"Growl?"

Red looked at her hands. She had only been splattered with Growl's blood, not like Kicker and Biter, and they'd long since washed it off.

"Like Kicker and Biter. Only girl."

"Oh. And what happened to her?"

"Bang bang bang."

Bang bang bang and Growl fell, fell from the sky like her wings didn't work, fell screaming, crying, all while the boys wailed.

"Oh." Anne Possible reached for her again, stopped.

Red turned away. "And Metis is— is gone."

Metis, Metis, Metis.

Metis was Alarm.

Metis was dead.
